Sheffield Wednesday Appoint Dave Challinor as New Manager After Stockport Success

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed former Stockport County boss Dave Challinor as their new manager, replacing Henrik Pedersen, who was sacked last Sunday after just one win in six League One games.

The Owls are on a winless run of three matches, with one draw and two defeats, and sit ninth in the League One table. Challinor will watch from the stands on Sunday when the Owls face Blackpool at 14:00 GMT, with interim boss Matt Hamshaw taking charge for one more game.

Dave Challinor’s Seven Promotions Sold Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday’s new owners wanted a winner, and Challinor’s record fits the bill. The 51-year-old former Bury and Tranmere defender has racked up seven promotions in his managerial career, which began at Colwyn Bay in 2010 and ran through AFC Fylde and Hartlepool.

Most recently, he guided Stockport County from the National League to the League Two title within three seasons, then took them to the League One play-offs twice. He departed the Hatters by mutual consent at the end of the 2025-26 season after losing the play-off final to Bolton Wanderers.

Working With Simon Wilson Again

Challinor already knows Wednesday’s sporting director Simon Wilson from their time together at Stockport, a relationship that is expected to be key going forward. He’s also tipped to bring in Clint Hill and Anthony Sweeney on his staff.

It’s a big step up in pressure. At Hillsborough, League One always means promotion expectations: Darren Moore delivered a 96-point season and still faced questions. With the top seven pulling away, Challinor’s first job is turning talented individuals into a winning team.
