Why Aston Villa dropped the legal threat against Carragher
On Friday, Villa said they would initiate legal action against the former England defender for what they described as “unacceptable insults” made on the Stick to Football podcast. Carragher had linked Villa boss Emery with replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United and told fans to “shut up” in response to their criticism.
Carragher apologised on Saturday for using “clumsy and wrong” language, insisting his comments were “tongue in cheek.” Though Villa never actually initiated legal proceedings, they have now formally ended their threat following the apology.
Carragher’s full apology to Villa fans
“I’d like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans,” the pundit wrote on social media on Saturday. “I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it’s not come across that way, so apologies.”
The original controversy stemmed from Carragher suggesting Emery would want to manage a “giant” club again, having previously managed Paris St-Germain and Arsenal — before joining Villa in 2022 and transforming them from relegation battlers into Champions League regulars, including guiding them to Europa League victory in 2026.
With the threat dropped and the apology accepted, the Villa–Carragher saga appears to be over.
