“Elsinore” is the film to beat at the 2026 British Independent Film Awards, landing 12 nominations announced Tuesday. The Andrew Scott-led biographical drama has already pushed its star into the Oscars best actor race — and British indie cinema’s biggest night looks set to follow suit.
The Studiocanal feature, which opened the BFI London Film Festival, stars Scott as Ian Charleson, the “Chariots of Fire” actor who was offered the career-peak role of Hamlet at London’s National Theatre just as he was succumbing to complications from AIDS.
2026 BIFA Nominations: Elsinore Leads With 12 Nods
Among “Elsinore’s” 12 nods are best British independent film, director for Simon Stone, lead performance for Andrew Scott and supporting actor for Billie Piper. The nominations were announced Tuesday by previous BIFA winners Jay Lycurgo and Posy Sterling.
Close behind: Clio Barnard’s “I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning” earned eight nominations, followed by Ashley Walters’ feature directorial debut “Animol” with seven. Welsh-language feature “Effi O Blaenau” and “Queen at Sea” each picked up six nominations, both in the best British independent film race.
When Are the 2026 BIFA Winners Announced?
The winners will be revealed at the BIFA awards ceremony on Sunday, December 6 at the Roundhouse in London. “I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning” — Barnard’s poignant drama about five childhood friends from Birmingham whose lifelong bonds fracture in adulthood — also picked up director and screenplay nods for Barnard and Enda Walsh.
“Animol,” Walters’ strikingly shot debut set in a young offenders institute, earned nods including breakthrough performance for Sekou Diaby and Tut Nyuot and the Douglas Hickox Award for best debut director. With Scott already an Oscars frontrunner, the BIFAs could confirm “Elsinore’s” awards-season momentum.
