Minnesota Lynx’s Olivia Miles and Cheryl Reeve win WNBA awards
The Minnesota Lynx’s Olivia Miles was unanimously voted as the WNBA Rookie of the Year, and Cheryl Reeve was named Coach of the Year on Monday. This is Reeve’s fifth time winning the award, the most for any coach in a major American professional league. Miles became the sixth Lynx rookie to win her honor, the most for any franchise.
Golden State Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase finished second in voting while Washington Mystics coach Sydney Johnson finished third.
Miles, who set league records for rookie scoring (790 points), the most 20-plus point rookie games (22) and the most 3-pointers by a rookie in a single game (eight), was surprised by her parents at a team dinner.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who presented Miles and Reeve with their awards at the Target Center, said she knew in April when Miles was drafted No. 2 pick that she would be back presenting Miles with the Rookie of the Year trophy at the end of the season.
“I knew when I called your name on draft night I would be standing here,” Engelbert said. “I really did.”
While Engelbert, and many others, might have seen Miles’ nod as ROY coming from a mile away, most could not have have guessed that Reeve would be named Coach of the Year. During an unprecedented free agency and an expansion draft that added two teams, Minnesota’s roster was decimated. Additionally, franchise player Napheesa Collier was set to miss a portion of the season as she recovered from ankle surgery.
However, Reeve led the Lynx to a 33-11 regular-season finish, earning the franchise the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.
“That’s the joy in this: It’s that we didn’t know when we got into this thing. We didn’t know exactly how this was going to end. We never set out and go, ‘Hey, we’re going to be the best team in the league. We’re going to finish first, and we’re going to get all these awards.’ That’s just simply not how it works,” Reeve said. “We get to work every day, and we lock in on our wins for the day. I just want to thank the players for their belief in being here, for their belief in my methods and my madness, all the things that make you guys great, that make us great together.”
Like Miles, Reeve was surprised by family with the award. Her son, Oliver, broke the news to the coach on Monday after the Lynx’s practice.
