Sadie Sink To Star In ‘The Guest’ Movie Based On Emma Cline Book

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Emma Cline’s bestselling novel The Guest, looks to be headed to the big screen as Deadline is hearing A24 and Square Peg are in negotiations for rights to the book, with Sadie Sink in talks to star in and Lorene Scafaria in talks to write and direct a feature film. Sink will also produce alongside Square Peg.

Published in 2024 by Penguin Random House, the novel follows a calculating grifter who navigates the treacherous world of summer in the Hamptons. The book was longlisted for the Pen/Faulkner Award, and was named a Belletrist Book Club pick and a best book of the year by the New Yorker, Time, NPR, the Washington Post, Financial Times, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Vogue, Glamour, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping and more.

Studios and stars have been chasing rights since The Guest hit shelves, with Sink being among its biggest fans. When word got rights were hitting the market over the summer, sources say Sink moved fast and quickly attached herself to the package, with Scafaria joining shortly after.

Insiders say there were around 12 other buyers in the mix for the auction, but ultimately the Sink-Scafaria package from A24 and Square Peg won out. The studio is now in exclusive negotiations for rights.

With her series Stranger Things coming to an end this past winter, Sink has hit the ground running with the next stage of her career, recently starring as Jean Grey opposite Tom Holland in the record-breaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She is set to reprise the role in the upcoming Marvel pic X-Men, which begins production at the top of the year.

Scarfaria is best known for her Lionsgate drama Hustlers, starring Jennifer Lopez. She also directed a handful of episodes of HBO’s Emmy-winning Succession.

Sink is repped by WME and Peikoff Mahan. Scarfaria is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer Dern Weber.

‘Other Mommy’ Box Office Previews Push It Ahead of ‘Social Reckoning’

Published

on

Other Mommy looks to be firmly in charge of the weekend box office as The Social Reckoning seeks to find more engagement.

Jessica Chastain leads Universal Pictures’ Other Mommy, which collected $3.6 million from Thursday previews. Director Rob Savage‘s horror title opens in 3,200 North American theaters, with the studio projecting a $20 million opening for the movie about a sinister entity showing up in a young girl’s closet.

Carrying a $19 million production budget, Other Mommy will not have the benefit of critical support, as the movie holds a rough 18 percent approval rating from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Richard Lawson wrote that the movie is “an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits and half-baked mythology.”

Also debuting this weekend is Sony Pictures’ The Social Reckoning, which grossed $650,000 from Thursday previews. The $30 million-budgeted film opens in 2,600 North American theaters, with the studio expecting around $7 million for the frame. By comparison, last week’s Tom Cruise-led Digger pulled in $1.2 million in previews on its way to just $8 million for the weekend, although that Warner Bros. title holds a much heftier budget.

Aaron Sorkin helmed the fact-based follow-up to 2010’s The Social Network, director David Fincher’s beloved feature about the founding of Facebook that earned Sorkin an Academy Award for his screenplay. Jesse Eisenberg, who landed an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, did not return for the new movie, with Jeremy Strong taking over the part. The Social Network opened at No. 1 with $22.4 million before reaching a global cume of $224 million.

Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White also star in the thriller about a Facebook staffer (Madison) working with a journalist (White) to expose concerning truths about the company. Critics have been mixed, with The Social Reckoning holding a 57 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, although THR chief film critic David Rooney’s review heralded it as an “engrossing whistleblower thriller.”

During a recent conversation with THR, Sorkin left the door open for a third Facebook-centric film. “Whenever I’m done with something, I’m always like Sisyphus at the bottom of the mountain again,” the filmmaker explained. “This movie opens Oct. 9. On Oct. 10, I’m going to be at the bottom of the mountain, and I will have no idea. So if a good story comes along and it takes place at Facebook, sure.”

Also hitting select theaters this weekend are Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk, Chris Rock’s Misty Green and biographical drama Tenzing.

Mike Ditka, Chicago Bears Legend, Dies at 86

Published

on

Legendary NFL tight end, three-time Super Bowl winner and former Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka has died at the age of 86. No cause of death has been made public.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Mike Ditka,” his family shared in a Friday statement. “While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family.”

“Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever,” they concluded.

One of American football’s most iconic, groundbreaking and eclectic personalities, Ditka is best known for coaching the 1985 Chicago Bears. At the helm of that team’s legendary, potentially best-ever NFL defense, Ditka led the ’85 Bears to the beloved NFL franchise’s only Super Bowl championship to date. They finished the regular season that year with a 15-1 record and handily beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX 46-10.

During his coaching tenure, which lasted from 1982 through 1992, Ditka led the Bears to seven playoff appearances and the NFL Championship game three times.

He was hired to the position by Bears founder and his former coach, George Halas, following Ditka’s nine-year run as an assistant head coach and special teams coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. He won his second Super Bowl in 1978 as a member of the Cowboys coaching staff when the team defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10 at Super Bowl XII.

Before his coaching career, Ditka played in the NFL for 13 years. He was drafted by the Bears as the fifth overall pick in the 1961 NFL Draft. He went on to become the first tight end in NFL history to reach 1,000 receiving yards in just his rookie season. He won Rookie of the Year following the 1961 season and went on to play for the Bears for six years. He later played for the Philadelphia Eagles for two years and finished his playing career with a four-year run on the Dallas Cowboys.

Born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, Ditka won his first Super Bowl in 1972 when the Cowboys defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3 at Super Bowl VI. After his playing career concluded, Ditka became the first tight end to be welcomed into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Hall in 1988. His jersey number, 89, was retired by the Bears in 2013.

After he retired from coaching, Ditka went on to have a prolific media and business career. He opened several restaurants, appeared in numerous commercials and even turned in memorable film and television performances, including in Will Ferrell’s 2005 sports comedy, “Kicking and Screaming.” He also worked as an analyst at NBC and ESPN and was a permanent fixture on ESPN’s “Sunday Morning Countdown” from 2006 through 2015.

He suffered two heart attacks previously and had a minor stroke in 2012.

“‘Iron Mike’ brought an unrivaled level of toughness to an era already defined by physicality,” Pro Football Hall of Fame president and CEO Jim Porter said in a statement. “But he also was much more gifted as a pass catcher than many realized and became the ideal player for Coach George Halas to reimagine the tight end position. Mike brought competitiveness and a hard-nosed play style as he developed into both a fantastic blocker and someone who could punish would-be tacklers on his receptions.”

“He brought that same philosophy to his coaching, leading the famous 1985 team that paired with one of the most vaunted and dominant defenses in NFL history with a top-ranked offense,” Porter continued. “Mike’s captivating personality and leadership qualities will be preserved and celebrated forever in Canton.”
