UK Submits ‘Rehearsals For A Revolution’ For International Film Oscar

Published

on

The UK has selected Pegah Ahangarani’s Rehearsals For A Revolution as its entry to the Best International Feature Film category of the 99th Academy Awards.

The film explores Iranian filmmaker Ahangarani’s experience of exile as she rebuilds her life and creative practice in London, through five portraits of relatives and mentors, which are also expressions of resistance. The UK played an integral role in the film’s journey, serving as the base where it was written.

Drawing from personal archives, home videos, street protests footage, newspapers, and recorded voices, Ahangaran retraces more than 40 years of Iran’s history. From the early days of 1979, until the war that began in 2026, she pieces together intimate and collective memories, forming the portrait of a country shaped by political repression and in constant hope for a revolution.

Sony Pictures Classics announced the selection of the film as the UK’s entry and also detailed release plans.

The distributor said it will give the film qualifying runs in New York and L.A. in December. It will then open it exclusively at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre in L.A. and the Film Forum in New York on January 8, 2027, and before rolling it out across the country over the following weeks.

The deeply personal debut feature premiered as a Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the L’Oeil d’Or, and played last month at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.

It was recently honored with an Albie Award from the Maysles Documentary Center, an award honoring those who inspire, not only through their work, but also through their roles as mentors, role models, and champions of social justice.

“How extraordinary to see Pegah’s remarkable film recognized in this category. From winning the L’Oeil d’Or at Cannes to the standing ovations at TIFF and now this recognition, Rehearsals For A Revolution is building incredible momentum and marking a significant moment for a formidable female filmmaker creating in exile from her home country,” said SPC in a statement.

“This selection in the Best International Feature category has the potential to be truly transformative for the film, opening doors to audiences around the world while shining a spotlight on Pegah’s extraordinary talent and her vital voice. It’s a recognition that will have a lasting impact not only on the life of this film, but on Pegah’s future career as a filmmaker.

Dhar Mann’s Creator City in L.A. to be a new destination for creators

Published

on

Dhar Mann took center stage at MIPCOM on Sunday for the market’s first-ever pre-opening headline session. He broke down the vision for his soon-to-open studio site, Creator City.

Mann founded Dhar Mann Studios and recently announced Creator City, a four-acre campus in L.A. with multiple sound stages and, he said, 175 sets able to house 15 productions concurrently.

“It’s basically where creators, brands, and culture [will] all come together in one place,” Mann said. “All of the sets that we have in our current studio, they’re unbranded, because five years ago nobody was taking me seriously, nobody was taking YouTubers very seriously.

“But now all the sets [at Creator City] are actual brands. When you see content being created, it’s not just a random coffee shop, it could be a Starbucks, it’s not just a random retail store, it could be a Target.”

DMS is working with a handful of brands that will be launch partners. “This is going to be the place that the top creators in the world come to make content [and] when they’re shooting content, it’s [with] actual real brands that live in the real world.”

The DMS founder, who talked about starting out shooting on a phone while struggling to pay his rent, added: “You’re going to start to see all kinds of storytelling around real brands coming out of that studio. We’re having our grand opening Super Bowl week.”

Talking of brands, Mann said DMS is expanding a relationship with consumer electronics giant Samsung that has already yielded one scripted series, Unlikely Romances, about seemingly improbable couples. There will be a new show called Unlikely Families.

“When it comes to family, it’s not always about blood, it’s often about love,” Mann said. “There’s so many people that became like brothers to me or father figures. This whole series is about families that come together due to unlikely circumstances, and they seem like they would never work out as a family. But against all odds, love is more important than blood. It’s coming out in the next couple months.”

DMS has struck deals with media giants Disney and Fox and the DMS founder said the future of entertainment is about bridging the traditional business and the creator economy. “There is such a magic that happens when folks from the traditional world and the creator world can come together,” he said.

DMS, meanwhile, is ramping up production. It will have a new original every month from later this year. “The future is definitely building IP,” Mann said. “Starting in December, every single month we are launching one new series on our YouTube.”

Mann was joined by former MTV and Disney exec Sean Atkins, CEO of DMS, and said the duo hashed out the content strategy for the studio based on a digital-first rather than traditional, business model.

“The thinking is just different for us, because of the low-cost model, because of the speed,” Mann said. “We’re able to just continue to throw as many darts on the wall and see which one sticks. We had the realization, as we’re working on pitching all these different platforms. One day I had a conversation with Sean, and it was like, ‘Why don’t we just do that ourselves, on our own YouTube?’”

A Pep Talk For Trad Media

Speaking to a room of TV folk, Mann was asked about the anxiety many staffers and execs in the traditional business are feeling amid waves of consolidation, fragmentation and change.

In a characteristically upbeat manner, he gave the Cannes crowd a pep talk. “Don’t get married to your job title, get more married to the skills that you have, and develop those,” he said.

“There’s so many people out there, such as myself, that really value those skills and are looking to work with folks like you. So, while I understand there’s a lot of doom and gloom, there are also so many exciting opportunities that are happening if you’re open to it.”

Domestic Box Office Rallies Past $8 Billion Mark, +20% Ahead Of 2025

Published

on

The motion picture studios can easily sing that 42nd Street song “We’re in the Money” as the U.S. and Canada box office clicked past the $8 billion mark on Friday.

Why is this a big deal? Because in post-Covid times distributors and exhibitors were thankful enough to even hit $8 billion in North America.

Rentrak points out that 2026 hit the $8 billion mark in 282 days, matching the exact pace of 2011 and reaching that milestone a full 59 days earlier than in 2025. Last year the domestic box office for Jan. 1-Dec. 31 finaled at $8.87B. Currently for the Jan. 1-Oct. 11 period, the U.S./Canada box office stands at $8.07B, +20% ahead of the same period in 2025 ($6.75B).

This is the fourth time that the domestic box office has clicked past $8B post-pandemic, the other two years being 2024 ($8.7B) and 2023 ($9B, the best domestic take post-Covid).

Many box office sources have forecasted that this year will final at $10 billion (Disney/Marvel Studio’s Avengers: Doomsday and Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune Part III are expected to do the trick). Exhibitors and studios continue to yearn for the good old days: Between 2015-2019, the North American box office grossed $11B+ annually. The highest domestic B.O. year ever per Rentrak was 2018 with $11.9B.

Top ten movies at the domestic box office so far in 2026:

  1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Sony) $956.8M
