Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have dropped the “Expectations” remix — and it comes with a gloriously retro music video. The track, which arrived on October 15, marks Rodrigo’s first-ever remix and Roan’s first guest feature on anyone’s song, a milestone the two longtime friends celebrated in style.

Game Shows, David Byrne, and Retro Chaos
Directed by Bardia Zeinali, the video for “Expectations” throws the duo into a fictional 1970s game show called “The Big Expectations Show”, where they compete as contestants on sets inspired by classics like Hollywood Squares, Family Feud, and Wheel of Fortune. Hosting the whole affair is none other than David Byrne, the Talking Heads frontman, playing a character named Johnny Johnson.
The remix itself replaces Rodrigo’s original second verse with a brand-new Chappell Roan verse, as the two take turns dressing down unworthy suitors — the song’s whole thesis being that it’s okay to have high standards in how a partner treats you. Longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, who produced the original, also appears in the video.
A Collaboration Years in the Making
The pairing makes perfect sense: Roan got her big break opening for Rodrigo’s Sour and Guts tours, and the two have remained close friends ever since. The remix’s rollout was equally fun — rumors began swirling last weekend when a German retailer briefly listed the single before pulling it, and Rodrigo made it official just two days later.
“Expectations” is the penultimate track on Rodrigo’s third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 equivalent album units in its first week. The remix is also available on limited-edition 7-inch vinyl, CD, and cassette for physical media fans.
