Clayface looks like a win for the DCU after earning an estimated $43 million in its opening weekend at the global box office. The low-budget DC film topped the charts, split between $24 million domestically and $19 million internationally.

Clayface box office opening weekend hits $43 million
The opening total lands toward the higher end of early projections, a strong result for a film built around one of Batman’s most twisted and often overlooked villains. Audiences turned out to see Tom Rhys Harries bring the character to the big screen, and the film’s October timing means Halloween moviegoers will have something spooky to catch next weekend too.
The film follows Matt Hagen, a man attempting to rebuild his life after a horrible attack leaves his face scarred, in a story packed with brutal body horror elements. Directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, it takes viewers into the darkest corners of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s universe yet, carrying a hard-R rating.
Why Clayface’s $43 million start matters for the DCU
That darker tone raised questions before release: how would such an adult-oriented story fit into the same world as the bright and bubbly Superman from 2025? So far, the gamble appears to be paying off — especially compared to Supergirl, which landed as a box office disappointment earlier this year after earning $126.46 million against a budget of almost $200 million.
Clayface, by contrast, is already close to matching its reported $44 million budget after a single weekend. Reviews have helped as well, with Rotten Tomatoes recording 75% from critics and an impressive 94% from audiences. There is still plenty of ground to cover before it can officially be declared a success, but this is exactly the kind of start DC needed.
