The Oscars will always reward human excellence, even as artificial intelligence spreads through filmmaking. That was the message from Academy leadership in Tokyo, where president Lynette Howell Taylor told Variety that human-driven work remains at the heart of what the Academy honours.

Howell Taylor, Academy CEO Bill Kramer, chief membership, impact and industry officer Meredith Shea and Amy Homma, director and president of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and Academy Collection, are in Japan for the Tokyo International Film Festival to meet members and filmmakers.
Oscars AI Era: Human Excellence Still Comes First
The comments come at a moment when AI tools are reshaping every stage of filmmaking, from writing and visual effects to editing and sound. The Academy’s position, as laid out by its leadership, is that those tools do not change the core test: the work being honoured must reflect human creativity and excellence.
That stance will reassure many filmmakers worried that AI-generated work could crowd out human artists. It also sets a clear direction for the Academy as it continues to grapple with how new technology fits into awards eligibility and craft recognition.
Oscars International Feature Rule Tweaks Left Open
At the same time, Academy chiefs left the door open to tweaks to the international feature rules. Leadership expects to keep refining the rules in the first year of a new route that lets festivals qualify films — a change that could widen the path to Oscar consideration for films from around the world.
The Tokyo visit itself underlines that global outlook. Meeting members and filmmakers in Japan, and discussing both AI and international qualification in the same breath, shows an Academy thinking about its future as an international institution, not just a Hollywood one.
