Nat Sciver-Brunt: England have underachieved since famous 2017 World Cup win
There have been positive developments with the professionalisation of the domestic game and the introduction of The Hundred since the dramatic victory at a sold-out Lord’s, but England have failed to win any of the four T20 World Cups, the two 50-over editions or the five Ashes series since 2017.
They also failed to win a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Sciver-Brunt has spoken previously about wanting to follow the success of England’s women’s football and rugby union teams in winning major trophies at home this summer.
She was speaking at an event with cricket charity Chance to Shine which runs a programme to develop leadership and cricket skills in young girls – the very people Sciver-Brunt hopes can be inspired over the coming months.
“A win could change what women’s cricket looks like in this country,” Sciver-Brunt said. “Just the carrot of that is enough to motivate anyone really. It certainly could change what this team is about.
“We didn’t really do it after 2017, but being a consistently good team is something that everyone tries to do.
“I’m hoping we can be a consistently good team and we’d love to start off with a T20 World Cup win.”
England will name their squad for this summer’s T20 World Cup this week.
Sciver-Brunt and former captain Heather Knight may be the only members from the 2017 final XI included.
The core of the team is set to be similar to the sides from recent years but Sciver-Brunt and coach Charlotte Edwards have to decide whether to inject fresh blood into the team through the likes of 19-year-old batter Davina Perrin or 18-year-old spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman.
Corteen-Coleman impressed in the intra-squad matches held on a tour of South Africa earlier this year, which England used as World Cup preparation in the absence of international fixtures this winter.
Sciver-Brunt defended England’s players skipping a round of 50-over domestic matches for another training camp earlier this month.
“We thought it was our best preparation for our bowlers to be bowling against our batters and really be put under pressure to execute their skills,” she said.
“I know that meant that some games were missed, but as a team we found it really valuable to be together.
“We haven’t played that much cricket over the winter, so being together as a squad and trying to recreate some of those pressure situations was really important.”

The 24-year-old England hooker beat his Wigan team-mate Adam Keighran and Leeds full-back Lachie Miller to win the award.
O’Neill has been at the heart of an impressive Wigan side which won the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield in 2026.
He made 31 appearances in all competitions and was also named Rugby League Writers and Broadcasters Association Player of the Year.
O’Neill was sin-binned in last year’s Super League Grand Final for a wayward tackle on Tyrone May, however he inspired Wigan to two trophies, after a season without silverware in 2025.
It was a memorable night for the Warriors with Matt Peet also named Betfred Super League Coach of the Year having guided his side to the League Leaders’ Shield and Challenge Cup.
Wigan earned a clean sweep in the final three shortlist for the Woman of Steel award as Eva Hunter, Jenna Foubister and Megan Willams were all nominated, with Foubister taking the prize.
It was the second year in a row that three Wigan players were shortlisted, however this year the Warriors missed out on adding the Women’s Super League title to their Women’s Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Crowns after they were beaten by York Valkyrie on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Halifax Panthers’ Rob Hawkins won the Wheels of Steel award.

They’re full of nous and strength and belief. Their coach, Murat Yakin, has the calm authority of a man who knows, with absolute certainty, that his team will prevail.
Once the opening goal went in, Yakin turned around in his technical area with a half-smile on his face. Job done, already.
