Barack Obama explained that he does not weigh in that often on Donald Trump’s presidency because he doesn’t want to morph from a political leader to just another commentator.
In a far-reaching interview with The New Yorker, the former president expanded on his reasonings for not being seen combating Trump on a daily basis even when he is often brought up by the current president in interviews and on social media.
“For me to function like Jon Stewart, even once a week, just going off, just ripping what was happening — which, by the way, I’m glad Jon’s doing it — then I’m not a political leader, I’m a commentator,” Obama said. “The media environment is so difficult that people don’t even know all the stuff I am doing, right? And, I think, when they do see me, then the sense is ‘Well, why isn’t he doing that every day’ instead of just during a midterm election, or during a referendum campaign around gerrymandering, or what have you?”
Plus, the 44th president even admitted he is already more involved in politics at this point than he wanted to be. While he is largely alright with this at the end of the day, Obama explained that it’s actually Michelle Obama who wishes he did not have to wade back into the political world so frequently.
“She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” he said. “It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her. I’m more forgiving of it, in the sense that I understand why people feel that way, because people aren’t looking at me in historical comparison to other presidents. They don’t care about the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office.”
Elsewhere, Trump has spent much of his return to office lambasting Obama. One of the peaks happened back in February when he posted a racist AI-generated video of Obama and his wife as apes. While the former president said he doesn’t take Trump’s online jabs personally, it’s a different story when his family gets involved.
“I mean, I’m always offended when my wife and kids get dragged into things, because they didn’t choose this,” Obama said. “That’s a line that even people whose politics I deeply reject, I would expect them to care about. I would never talk about somebody’s family in that way.”

Apple TV had a record-breaking 2026 Emmys with 28 Emmys (29 if you include the commercials win), the most for the streamer ever and the most for any platform this year. Apple TV’s big night at the Emmys on Sept. 14 was followed by a big week — the biggest in the streamer’s seven-year history, the company said Monday.
No, hell has not frozen over, and Apple did not release hard viewership numbers, just qualitative data and year-to-year and week-to-week increases. They still provide a glimpse into the streamer’s performance, especially when compared to existing third-party ratings information.
Per Apple, fueled by strong deliveries from the Cold War buddy comedy Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, Season 4 of Ted Lasso, and a post-Emmy viewership surge for big winners Widow’s Bay and Pluribus, the service had its highest weekly viewership ever for the week of Sept. 14, rising by +67% year-over-year.
Released straight-to-streaming on Sept. 4, Mayday has become Apple TV’s biggest film debut on the platform to date over its first 18 days, the company said. In the U.S., Mayday opened at No. 1 in Luminate’s Sept. 4-10 weekly rankings with 8.7M views. It remained strong in Week 2, placing at No.2.
Freshman horror comedy Widow’s Bay, the biggest winner at the Emmys with 14 trophies — the most ever for a comedy series in a single season — saw a massive halo effect as its viewership skyrocketed +280% week-over-week in the post-Emmys week of Sept. 14, per Apple, with the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, India, Poland, and Spain, leading the charge.
Luminate data corroborates that claim. For the week of Sept. 4-10, Widow’s Bay was outside of the Top 50. For the week of Sept. 11-17, which includes the first three days after the Emmys where Widow’s Bay was crowned Outstanding Comedy Series, it jumped to No. 13.

Pluribus, Apple TV’s second biggest Emmy winner with six statuettes, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Rhea Seehorn, experienced +200% surge in viewership week-over-week following the ceremony, per Apple.
Since the sci-fi drama from Emmy winner Vince Gilligan wrapped its run back in December while Widow’s Bay, starring Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, was a more recent entry that didn’t launch until end of April, for Pluribus, the increase was likely off a small base as the series did not reenter Luminate’s Top 50 the week of Sept. 11.

‘Slow Horses’
Apple TV
Slow Horses, winner of one Emmy, also got a bump, getting back into Luminate’s Top 50 the week of Sept. 11-17 at No. 43 after missing the cut the prior week. The spy thriller also posted a rare season-to-season viewership increase for a show so deep into its run, with Season 6 up +25% over Season 5 based on the first seven days of release, maintaining its position as Apple TV’s #1 UK title, per the company.
Nielsen’s reporting is delayed; its figures for the week of Sept. 14 will be released this Thursday.
The most recent Nielsen weekly streaming report for the week of Sept. 7 has one Apple TV titles in the overall Top 10, Ted Lasso at No. 7 with 734M minutes viewed. (Comedies are at a disadvantage in Nielsen’s ranking which are based on overall watched time vs. number of views.)
With that, Jason Sudeikis’ soccer comedy was a major contributor to Apple TV’s year-over-year viewership jump in the post-Emmys week. Its fourth season, which stumbled creatively a bit before finding its footing in the second half, marks the most viewed seasons for a returning Apple TV comedy over the first 54 days, according to the streamer.
Also possibly factoring into the year-to-year gains is the iCloud+ expansion launched by Apple on Sept. 15, which rolled out access to Apple TV at no additional cost for paid iCloud+ subscribers across more than 170 countries.

Megyn Kelly ripped into Madonna’s appearance at the 2026 Video Music Awards, calling the music icon “needy.”
The “Confessions II” singer came out on top Sunday night at the awards show with seven trophies, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for their song “Bring Your Love.”
Madonna’s opening performance during the show featured dancers that had a laser seemingly coming out of their crotch area. Kelly railed into the singer, saying that it was unnecessarily vulgar.
“It’s really more of a butt exercise they’re simulating if I’m being honest because I don’t think most people have sex like that,” she said, commenting on the video in real time on Monday’s episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show.” “I don’t know if this is simulated blow jobs or what.”
Kelly also said that the singer started “bombing” while accepting an award later in the night. Madonna pretended to pull the laser out of her butt and drop it.
“Again, the picture of class. Um, sad, but that’s what she thinks is entertaining,” she said.
During another part of the show, Madonna asked the production team to raise the mic, so she wasn’t having to bow down to it, joking that she has “been bowing down to people for too long.”
“What the what? Who? You’re Madonna,” Kelly asserted. “Who have you bowed down to? Give me a break. Stop trying to act like you’re a victim.”
“Could you please try to find a more empowering narrative for age 68, please? I’m begging you,” she added. “She stinks of desperation.”
Later the former Fox News host made fun of Madonna for not even trying to lip sync during her performance, saying that she frauded the audience. She also pointed out what seemed to be padding in her bloomers.
Kelly said that Madonna used to be in good shape, but now at 68, she lost some muscle definition that she once had. The host said that the butt pads looked unnatural.
“It doesn’t look good. She just wants us talking about her, which I’m complying with,” she said. “But again, how is this hot, attractive, sexy? It just telegraphs needy to me.”
