England opening batter Emilio Gay was out for a duck as Pakistan made a strong start to their tour against a Professional County Club Select XI.

Concerns over Gay’s fitness for England’s first Test against Pakistan, which starts on August 19, were allayed by the left-hander’s inclusion for the game at Beckenham, but he made the worst possible start.

The 27-year-old, who had suffered a shoulder issue playing for Durham last week, was caught off the bowling of Mohammad Abbas by Salan Agha at second slip, having failed to score from his 12 balls faced.

PCCSXI would go on to be bowled out for 305, with captain Tom Haines, Caleb Falconer and Saif Zaib contributing half-centuries before Matthew Fisher, who is in England’s 16-player squad for the first two Tests against Pakistan, made a crucial unbeaten 62 batting at 10.

James Rew, who made his England Test debut against New Zealand in June, was also dismissed cheaply as he fell for just four to Abbas.

Abbas (3-37) and Mohammad Ali (3-23) were the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, while Khurram Shahzad (2-55) also chipped with a couple of wickets despite being more expensive.

There was also a wicket apiece for Aamer Jamal (1-32) and Ali Usman (1-38).

Pakistan then put themselves in a strong position in the three-day contest by reaching 44-0 at the close, with Azan Awais (15*) and Imam-ul-Haq (26*) seeing out the final 13 overs of the day.

Fisher was economical as he went for just seven runs from his four overs, while the other PCCSXI player who is in England’s Test squad, spinner Shoaib Bashir, bowled two overs at the end of the day.

Both sides are fielding more than XI players in the match, with Pakistan attempting to give as many of their touring squad as possible match practice ahead of Tests at Headingley, Lord’s and Edgbaston.

England will be led captained by Joe Root following his reappointment as captain after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket during the final Test of the 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand in June.

England also have a new head coach in Stephen Fleming, who has replaced Brendon McCullum but is not taking charge of the side during the Pakistan series, for which Marcus Trescothick will be in interim charge.

Derek McInnes’ winless start to life at Rangers hit its lowest point as they were embarrassed and dumped out of the Europa League to a chorus of boos by Jagiellonia Bialystok on aggregate following a 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

Nik Prelec, who scored once in 24 appearances for then-Championship side Oxford last season, nodded Rangers down into the Conference League 10 minutes into the second half as McInnes’ slow start on his return to Glasgow was extended to a fourth game with a 3-2 defeat over two legs.

McInnes admitted his side had deserved the catcalls of their own fans as they attempted to thank them for the attendance after the game – and suggested his squad is not ready for the rigours of Europa League football.

“I think it was justified to be honest,” he said. “It wasn’t good enough. What we served up, particularly second half, wasn’t good enough.

“I’ve got to be honest with you, I’ve got to own it. I felt we had to make the game open and it was a bit too open at times in the first half and obviously Gassama and Yakota playing as effectively wing backs, we were asking a lot of them at times.

“The club is built for Europa League and Champions League but I’m not sure the team is quite ready for it, and that pains me to say it. We need more quality and confidence into the team.”

The hosts had cancelled out their Polish visitors’ first-leg lead inside the opening 20 minutes when former Celtic defender Yuki Kobayashi was penalised by VAR for a handball inside his own box, with Lawrence Shankland’s debut goal since his summer move from Hearts bringing Rangers level from the spot.

McInnes’s side had more chances to add to their early lead on the night when Thelo Aasgaard fired just wide, while Ryan Naderi also went close before the interval.

But a limp second-half showing was duly punished by Prelec and despite huffing and puffing, the hosts never did enough to test goalkeeper Slawomir Abramowicz after the break, leaving McInnes and his side to take in jeers from around the ground as their Europa League campaign fell at the first hurdle – their earliest exit from the competition since 2017.

What next for Rangers?

Rangers will now drop into the Conference League play-off round, and will face Jablonec, who finished fifth in the Czech top flight last season, for a place in the league phase. The first leg will be played at Ibrox on August 20.
