Linz ASK 5 – 1 Celtic

Published

on

Celtic suffered a stunning Champions League play-off collapse as LASK overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit to win 5-4 after extra-time and sent the Scottish champions crashing into the Europa League.

In one of the worst nights in Celtic’s European history, the Hoops were up 4-0 on aggregate after Callum McGregor extended their 3-0 first-leg advantage early on in Austria.

Asked if it was the worst he’s felt on the touchline, Celtic boss Martin O’Neill said: “Without a doubt. Naturally it took me a long time to get over the UEFA Cup final in 2003, but this was majorly disappointing.”

Despite wobbling after goals from Moses Usor, Robert Ljubicic and a Samuel Adeniran stunner, Celtic were minutes from booking a place in Thursday’s League phase draw before second-half substitute Florian Flecker headed home a 90th-minute equaliser to force extra-time.

Mark Wilson reports on Celtic’s 5-1 AET defeat to Linz ASK, losing a four-goal lead to be knocked out of the Champions League

Full of all the energy and desire that Celtic whimpered at the sight of, the momentum belonged to the Austrian champions. Adeniran struck from range again in the 109th minute to put LASK in front on aggregate for the first time.

He very nearly added salt to Celtic’s wounds when he stepped up for a penalty moments later, after Reo Hatate fouled Krystof Danek deep, but Viljami Sinisalo kept the spot-kick out to give his side a lifeline.

It was a lifeline that went begging as the full-time whistle confirmed Celtic would miss out on the Champions League for the second consecutive season. Last season they were eliminated on on penalties at this stage to Kairat Almaty.

This year’s failure, given the context of a four-goal aggregate lead, will be an even harder blow.

Once again the Hoops will be involved in the Europa League league-phase draw on Friday.

How the momentum swung in Celtic’s 5-1 Champions League defeat to LASK

The key moments from Raiffeisen Arena

  • 6: BIG CHANCE! Celtic move it quickly up the field. Yang plays a ball into the area that Baur latches onto, poking wide of the mark with Hogh running in.
  • 20: LASK CHANCES! The first falls to Mbuyamba in the area, who can’t quite match the flight of the ball to send it goalwards. Any touch on that and Lask would have had a goal. The second has Sinisalo worried, as it strikes the post.

  • 21: GOAL! It’s a smart, smart low strike from McGregor but it takes a nick off Andrade and flies past Jungwirth in the LASK goal.

  • 32: GOAL! IT’S A GIFT! Celtic punished for complacent play at the back. Nygren passes a ball back into no man’s land, putting it on a plate for Usor to stroke past Sinisalo.

  • 48: GOAL! LASK LEAD! Lask are beginning to believe. Ljubicic beats Sinisalo from range with a superb low strike from the edge of the area.

  • 58: GOAL! WHAT A FINISH!!! That is simply superb technique. No chance Sinisalo was getting anywhere near that. The LASK striker is teed up outside the box and curls home.

  • 90: GOAL! LASK MAKE IT FOUR TO SEND IT TO EXTRA TIME! Sinisalo does brilliantly to deny Joao Victor Tornich initially, but he can do nothing about the rebound as Florian Flecker heads home to make it 4-4 on aggregate!

  • 108: GOAL! Nightmare stuff for Celtic as Adeniran strikes from range again. LASK now lead on aggregate.

  • 114: FROM BAD TO WORSE! Hatate brings down Danek in the box gives away a penalty!

O’Neill: We should’ve been out of sight

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill cu a frustrated figure throughout

Celtic boss Martin O’Neill speaking with Amazon Prime:

“We should’ve been out of sight by half-time. We missed two great opportunities and then we gave them a lifeline right before half-time and then another one just after it. They came roaring back. That’s my team, that’s my responsibility.

“At half-time I thought we were still well in command of the game. Just after they score and then momentum goes in their direction. It’s hard to stem it when they’re chasing the game and we can’t get out for 10 minutes.

“These are tough games. This might have been a qualification game but it felt like a Champions League game. That doesn’t matter. Talking about the squad is for another day.

“It’s a massive disappointment. We’re playing in the Europa League but that’s no consolation this evening. There was a feel good factor and that’s a massive disappointment tonight.”

McGregor issues apology to Celtic fans

Celtic‘s Callum McGregor speaking with Amazon Prime:

“We got what we deserved. I thought we were passive all night. We actually looked scared to go and win the game.

“To be honest, I don’t think we were that good in the first leg either and we kind of got away with it. But then you’re up 3-0 and think you have a chance. When you play like that, you can’t have any excuse whatsoever.

“We have to suck it up. We apologise to the supporters and to the club because there’s no way we should lose that game. Now we have to see what character we have.

“You can’t lose the game by such a big margin and look for excuses elsewhere. This is where we see what people are made of in terms of what we achieve this season.”

Your views: ‘Celtic were hapless, hopeless and humiliated’

LJJ: “Absolutely embarrassing for Celtic, maybe Europa League is the level for them since they get into the CL with ease every year but don’t make an impact when actually in it. Maybe that’s their level, but I don’t think they deserve Europe at all after what I’ve just witnessed!”

Jonny: “Celtic got what they deserved. They didn’t exactly play well last week and were lucky to come away with three goals and decided to park the bus, just not good enough.”

Reinaldo7: “Don’t know whether to laugh or cry. Worse than last year against Kairat. Strange choices for subs tonight. Hang your heads in shame boys, they weren’t that special but made us look ordinary. More work needed if we are to succeed in Europe.”

Stevo: “I think this was worse than Kairat. Yes, it’s not ideal losing on penalties to them, but to be 4-0 up and throw that all away, that’s impressively shocking!”

jcluk: “No more LASK chances for Celtic. They were hapless, hopeless and humiliated. Can see them struggling domestically too this season.”

What next for Celtic…

Celtic will play in the Europa League this season. The Europa League league phase draw – involving Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace – takes place at 12pm UK time on Friday

Cardiff City: Krystian Bielik and Gabriel Osho provide boost for Brian Barry-Murphy

Published

on

Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy says Cardiff City’s defensive crisis has been alleviated with the “positive” arrival of Krystian Bielik and the potential return of Gabriel Osho.

Bielik joined the Bluebirds on a three-year contract from West Bromwich Albion, while Osho has returned to training after sustaining a knee injury during the 1-1 draw against Wrexham.

In addition to Osho, Cardiff have been missing fellow centre-backs Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish through injuries.

“We’ve had relatively positive news. Gabriel Osho trained on Tuesday, so hopefully he’ll continue today,” said Barry-Murphy.

“We haven’t seen a lot of Krystian yet because of the hurried nature of this [transfer], so we’ll see how he is today in training and then make a judgement.

“As pleased as we are to have him here, I think it’s important that we don’t rush him into doing something that he’s not ready for.”

Barry-Murphy says that while Bielik’s arrival eases the defensive worries, it also offers options in central midfield.

The versatility of the ex-Derby and Birmingham player is why the Cardiff boss has been tracking him for a “very long time “.

“I think the situation was urgent probably from the time that Ryan Wintle left the club,” added Barry-Murphy.

“We’re very aware of that area of the team needing significant reinforcements, and Krystian was always the one that we wanted to bring in, if possible.

“His qualities are obvious. He’s a highly technical player who’s played at a very high level for a very long time.

“The appeal of Krystian is that we see him equally adept at playing both as a holding midfield player and as a centre-back, and whatever we think is most beneficial for the team and the opponents we face.

“If he does well enough, then he’s a player. If he doesn’t, then obviously he has strong competition in both departments.

Data: A numbers-based distraction

The worlds of the WNBA and college sports have never been more engulfed by off-court/field stories. Just look at yesterday’s Pulse to see what courts, temporary restraining orders and NIL have wrought on college sports, fair or not. And in the WNBA, this season has simply seen a parade of forced negativity that would make most leagues crumble.

The solution, which we’ve mentioned in this space plenty of times, is to focus on the actual competition. I’ve got two tools for us to do that today, fresh off the presses. Let’s start with football:

This week, The Athletic published its 2026 College Football Playoff projection bracket, which will be used all season, odds updating as the games happen. There are odds for making the Playoff, winning a conference (if applicable), hosting a Playoff game, getting a first-round bye and winning the whole thing.

  • Our teams most likely to make the Playoff as Week 0 arrives: Notre Dame (76 percent), Texas Tech (72 percent), Miami (71 percent) and Ohio State (also 71). See all the data here.

We also have brackets from three of our experts, which you can see here

On the hardwood, we have a similar tool to project the WNBA playoffs … which are just around the corner. We know the playoff teams, but we don’t know the playoff matchups. Here’s a view of the projections right now:

You can fiddle around with the whole model here. And while we’re at it, read Ian O’Connor’s column on why the WNBA is going to skyrocket when it outlasts the ongoing culture wars. Let’s hope.

Let’s keep going:

Heartwarming? A guy who really needed this walk-off

The Braves gave the Dodgers a brutal loss last night via a Ha-Seong Kim walk-off single. A fun result, but nothing out of the ordinary, right?

Not exactly. First, look at the reaction:

There may be no player in baseball who needed a win more than Kim, who signed a one-year, $20 million deal in Atlanta this offseason and has missed significant time because of injuries. His stat line in 32 games this season, even with last night’s heroics: .078 average with a .252 OPS.

It’s his only hit since June, which is just astounding. Read our story from the game.

News to Know

RIP, Pro Bowl
The NFL Pro Bowl is no more, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported yesterday, ending a 75-year run for football’s all-star game. The NFL becomes the first major sports league to scrap its all-star competition in an era where these games have become challenging to draw interest. Instead, players will simply earn Pro Bowl honors with no game involved.

Mike Silver has an ode to what used to be an incredibly fun event. It’s worth a read today.

More news:

  • In a follow-up to yesterday’s news, SEC officials approved stiff penalties for any coaches and/or programs who violate the new rules around transfers. Yes, LSU sat out the vote.
  • Related: Any NFL players who return to college will be ineligible for future NFL Drafts.
  • The U.S. Open confirmed Venus and Serena Williams will earn a wild-card entry into the doubles bracket. Also, Stan Wawrinka is indeed getting his own wild-card spot for his last Open after some backlash.
  • DeWanna Bonner, in her pursuit of a WNBA title, signed with the Dream. More here.
  • Meanwhile, Unrivaled announced a new round of funding that puts the league’s valuation at $650 million.
  • Jeanie Buss petitioned a court to block a move by her family to sell the Buss stake in the Lakers, calling her siblings “devious.”
  • Blake Griffin’s next career stop: late-night TV.
  • Time to worry about the Commanders? Judging by yesterday’s practice, it might be.

Feedback Loop: The Pulse votes for punishment

The saga of LIV Golf continued its sad arc yesterday, as the organization notified most of its employees of an impending mass layoff. It’s been a rough few weeks.

Your opinion of LIV’s current/former golfers isn’t great, either. We asked yesterday if there should be any route for said players to rejoin the PGA Tour (which doesn’t appear open to the concept). The results:

That’s a plurality for some type of ban. We suggested a minimum of a year, and judging by some of your emails, many of you hope for longer. A solid percentage of you wanted to reopen the route Brooks Koepka took, in which he accepted certain conditions and steep financial penalties to return. Per current intel, that route isn’t open.

Thank you, as always, for voting. And while I have you, I want your opinion on one more thing.

ESPN confirmed to multiple outlets yesterday that it will get rid of the bottom-line ticker during its college football broadcasts, which hit me harder than expected. Is this:

  • A travesty. Bring it back ASAP.
  • Reality. I check scores on my phone anyway.

We’ll run those results tomorrow, too. Onward:

Watch Guide

📺 NFL: Rams “at” Chargers
10 p.m. ET on NFL Network
We have a four-game slate of preseason action tonight, but this is the game with the most on the line (translated through a preseason lens), as the Rams’ backup quarterback job hasn’t been decided yet. That may sound like small potatoes, but the “away” Los Angeles team here — read: these teams share a stadium — is the Super Bowl favorite with a 38-year-old quarterback. The backup might be important!

📺 MLB: Dodgers at Braves
7:15 p.m. ET on FS1
We’re back in Atlanta for a third straight night because a) it’s an elite pitching matchup (Yoshinobu Yamamoto versus Chris Sale) and b) it’s the best widely televised game.

📺 WNBA: Valkyries at Liberty
8 p.m. ET on Prime Video
This one is certain to have an impact on the playoff picture we mentioned above. Find a seat.

Ipswich working on loan deal for Aston Villa’s Tammy Abraham

Ipswich Town are working on a loan deal for Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham.

The 28-year-old only signed a four-and-a-half year contract with the club in January after joining from Besiktas in a €21million (£18m; $24.2m) deal.

He struggled to nail down a starting spot in Unai Emery’s side, however, scoring only twice in 16 appearances in the second half of the campaign.

The Athletic reported in July that Villa were listening to offers for him this summer.

If a move progresses Abraham would be the second striker departure from Villa Park with Ollie Watkins set to leave for Al Hilal. The England international said his goodbyes to team-mates and staff on Thursday ahead of completing a £50m move to the Saudi Pro League club.

Villa are working to replace both players with Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Rafael Leao of AC Milan the chosen targets.

Who are the biggest transfer overpays in Premier League history?

Tifo Football

Abraham is in his second spell with Villa, having spent the 2018-19 season on loan from Chelsea, when he helped the club to Championship promotion via the play-offs and finished as the second tier’s third-highest goalscorer.

Since leaving Chelsea in August 2021, Abraham spent four-and-a-half years in Italy and Turkey, with Roma, Milan and Besiktas. His three years in Rome was the longest of those spells, as he recorded 37 goals and 13 assists in 120 appearances.

Abraham rose to prominence in Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team during the 2019-20 season, when he received regular game-time, with the club unable to make signings that summer. He scored 15 times in 34 Premier League appearances, his strongest-ever return in the English top-flight.

Having represented England up to under-21 level, Abraham earned his first senior cap in November 2017. He has made 11 international appearances.

Ipswich have enjoyed a busy summer after securing promotion back to the Premier League with 12 new arrivals at Portman Road including Julio Enciso, Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu and Sasa Lukic.
