Emma Thompson’s ‘Nanny McPhee’ Musical Sets Summer 2027 London Debut

The Nanny McPhee stage musical with a book by Emma Thompson, first revealed by Deadline back in 2024, will open in London in summer 2027.

Based on the Universal Pictures/Working Title Nanny McPhee films, and the Nurse Matilda character by Christianna Brand and Edward Ardizzone that inspired them, the new musical will take the tale to the stage for the first time.

The creative team behind the production will feature actor and writer Thompson, music by singer-songwriter Gary Clark (frontman of the band Danny Wilson who wrote the music for Sing Street on stage and film), with original lyrics by Thompson and Clark.

‘I’ve lived with Nanny McPhee for so long that to see her finally tread the boards is supremely exciting,” said Thompson, who starred in the 2005 and 2010 McPhee films. “Theatre feels like her natural home – magic, music, mischief and a good dollop of danger can all happen right in front of you. Working with Gary Clark to create the musical heart that beats through the story has been an unforgettable journey of a lifetime. And I am thrilled and so proud that the brilliant Katy Rudd will be bringing it all to life with her inimitable witty wonderment. I can’t wait to introduce the all-new Nanny McPhee to audiences next summer.”

Nanny McPhee will be directed by Katy Rudd (Ballet Shoes and The Ocean at the End of the Lane), with set and costume designs by the Tony and Olivier Award-winning Rob Howell (Matilda the Musical) and choreography by Ellen Kane, winner of the 2023 World Choreography Award for Best Motion Picture Choreography for Matilda the Musical.

The musical’s synopsis: “When the mysterious figure of Nanny McPhee arrives at the Browns’ door she discovers a household in chaos; anarchic children who have driven away every Nanny before her, a desperate father, a donkey that is out of control, and a baby who will stop at nothing. Armed with her strange knobbly stick, exceedingly unorthodox methods and quite a lot of magic, Nanny McPhee begins to restore harmony. And as it turns out, the children aren’t the only family members who have lessons to learn.”

Also part of the creative team are orchestrations by Simon Hale, music supervision by Nigel Lilley, and music arrangements by Simon Hale and Nigel Lilley. Lighting is by Howard Hudson, sound designs by Ian Dickinson for Autograph, illusions by Chris Fisher, puppetry by Samuel Wyer, and projections by Andrzej Goulding.

Nanny McPhee is presented by Working Title Films and Universal Theatrical Group. The show is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Lindsay Doran, Emma Thompson, Paul Warwick Griffin, Gareth Hewitt Williams and Rebecca Quigley for Working Title Films.

‘Miami Vice ’85’ Movie Adds Danny Ramirez To Cast

EXCLUSIVE: Danny Ramirez is the latest to join the cast of Universal Pictures and Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 movie starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. Kosinski will direct the latest feature adaptation of the classic ’80s crime series, which has a script by Dan Gilroy. Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone and Whitney Peak recently joined the cast.

Miami Vice ’85 explores the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice, inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark Universal Television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking. The movie will be filmed for Imax and is set for release on May 19, 2028. Production will begin this year. It us unknown who Ramirez is playing in the pic.

The film is produced by Dylan Clark/Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Gilroy’s script is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the series he executive produced with Michael Mann; Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for the studio.

Ramirez recently wrapped production on Todd’s Haynes’ De Noche opposite Pedro Pascal as well as Baton, which he also directed and penned. He can be seen next in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.

He is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, Brillstein Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.

‘Furious’ Renewed For Season 2 By Hulu Ahead Of Season 1 Finale

Hulu has renewed Liz Meriwether‘s thriller Furious, starring Emmy Rossum, for a second season. It is an unusually early pickup by the Disney streamer which (like other platforms) usually waits for long-tail viewership data before making renewal decision. Furious is still rolling out its first season, with the season finale, written by Meriwether, premiering Aug. 31.

Hulu had not released ratings data for the show yet but noted in the renewal announcement that viewership has been growing week over week.

Nieslen’s reporting is delayed, with numbers for Furious‘ launch week coming out later today. Despite premiering with only three episodes vs. full-season drops for many streaming series, Furious is rumored to have cracked the Top 10 for streaming originals, which is based on total minutes consumed.

Despite its staggered release, Furious also has been a consistent presence on Luminate’s weekly rankings, peaking at No.5 with 2.43M U.S. views for its first full week of release.

Additionally, Furious is believed to be the #1 series on Disney+/Hulu worldwide for the month of August and the #2 freshman drama on Hulu in the U.S. year to date, with 4B cross-media impressions.

Furious‘ solid performance, coupled with its 98% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and reasonable cost by streaming standards likely tipped the scale for an early renewal.

From creator and executive producer Meriwether, 20th Television and Searchlight Television, Furious follows an FBI agent, Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer (Lola Petticrew). Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.

Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Scoot McNairy star alongside Rossum and Petticrew; Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way guest starred in Season 1, which was also executive produced by Rossum for Composition 8, along with Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead, and Sam Hoffman. Brian Kirk executive produced and directed episodes 101 and 102.

Furious is now streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ in the US for bundle subscribers and on Disney+ internationally.

‘Deadlocked’ Movie Cast: Sasha Calle Joins Jamie Foxx (EXCLUSIVE)

EXCLUSIVE: Sasha Calle (The Rip) is set for a major role opposite Jamie Foxx in Deadlocked, the new action film from Amazon MGM Studios that we announced earlier this month.

Directed by Nikhil Bhat, Deadlocked follows a grieving former Marine serving jury duty who is forced back into action when the trial of the century turns into a deadly hostage situation as the defendant’s daughter seizes the courthouse to free her father.

The film, written by Eric Scot Anderson (The Black Fox) and Matt Takejiro Bosack (CBS’ NCIS: Hawai’i), and based on their original idea, is being made for streaming. Producers include Fred Berger for Range, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Dave Caplan for C2, and Jamie Foxx for Foxxhole Productions. AJ Bourscheid, Liz Destro, Paul Currie and Corinne Foxx serve as executive producers.

Booking one major studio gig after another in recent years, Calle is coming off a role opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in The Rip, Joe Carnahan’s crime thriller for Netflix, which released in January and remained in the top 10 global film list for six weeks. She can currently be seen starring opposite Colin Farrell in the second season of Apple TV’s neo-noir series Sugar and will next be seen opposite Scarlett Johansson in Mike Flanagan’s take on The Exorcist for Universal, releasing in theaters on March 12, 2027.

Calle made her feature film debut as Supergirl in Warner Bros.’ The Flash, becoming the first Latina actress to portray the superhero in a major studio film. Other film credits include Daniel Minahan’s On Swift Horses, as well as Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio’s In the Summers, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and Directing Award for U.S. Dramatic Film in its 2024 premiere at Sundance.

Earlier in her career, Calle won a Daytime Emmy for her work on The Young and the Restless. She is repped by CAA, Luber Roklin, and Del Shaw Moonves.
