London City Lionesses 2 – 0 Brighton Women
Alexia Putellas scored her first goal in English football, helping London City Lionesses to a 2-0 win against Brighton and sending them second in the WSL table.
The biggest signing of the summer collected a rebounded save after Chiamaka Nnadozie initially stopped Kadidiatou Diani’s strike. She then swerved a half-volley around her defender that beat the still-recovering goalkeeper.

It was the first real chance of a first half that lacked many, although Brighton almost equalised instantly. Emily Murphy’s header curled onto the crossbar though and Keiko Seike – who was impressive defensively – could not sort her feet out to slot home the loose ball.
Lucia Corrales rounded off the victory late on, finishing a wonderful team break. Danielle van de Donk stole the ball away from Fran Kirby, releasing Delphine Cascarino, who in turn picked out the incoming run of Corrales on the left, who emphatically finished.
London City’s third win of the season sends them above Chelsea and Tottenham into second ahead of the remaining games on Sunday, while Brighton’s wait for a first WSL win goes on. They remain in 10th.

Friday’s opening matches ended with Northern Ireland edging out Wales 50-49 and tournament hosts Scotland getting the better of the Republic of Ireland 84-29.
World-ranked 15 Northern Ireland trailed Scotland 17-13 after the first quarter of what was a feisty, physical encounter on Saturday.
By half-time Scotland had extended their advantage to 35-20 following a second quarter which saw Fionnuala Toner ordered off.
Northern Ireland reduced their deficit by only one goal in the third quarter as the Scots led 47-33 after the third 15 minute period of the match.
Scotland pulled clear in the final quarter to secure victory.

World Championship Triathlon Series: Georgia Taylor-Brown finishes runner-up to Cassandre Beaugrand to
Great Britain’s Beth Potter claimed silver at the World Championship Triathlon Series behind Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand of France.
The final event of the series took place in Pontevedra, Spain, where Potter needed a win to overhaul Beaugrand in the overall standings.
But she finished fourth, with team-mates Georgia Taylor-Brown and Kate Waugh finishing second and third behind Beaugrand.
Beaugrand won comfortably, completing the 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run in one hour 50 minutes 52 seconds, which was over a minute quicker than Taylor-Brown.
Potter, who won the World Series at Pontevedra in 2023, remained in contention at the end of the cycle, but Beaugrand stretched clear of the three Brits in the second lap of the run and held firm.
It concludes a dominant season for Beaugrand, who has won all five of the World Championship circuit races she entered.
Taylor-Brown won the Czech Republic leg of the series earlier this month, which was her first win on the tour since 2023.
