England vs Sri Lanka: Tom Banton sets up huge win in series decider

Published

on

Third Metro Bank one-day international, Kia Oval

England 355-7 (50 overs): Banton 126, Brook 77, Cox 76

Sri Lanka 132 (29.1 overs): Kusal 35; Dawson 3-26

England won by 223 runs

Scorecard

Tom Banton delivered on all of his potential by crashing a brilliant first international century as England wrapped up their summer with an ODI series win over Sri Lanka.

The 27-year-old right-hander was once the rising star of English cricket when handed a debut in 2019 but afterwards fell out of love with the game after losing his way.

After reaching his hundred in 95 balls in the third one-day international at The Oval, he stood with arms wide and looked to the sky – all of that disappointment seemingly behind him.

The opener went on to make 126 from 105 deliveries, perfectly countering tricky early conditions – conditions in which Joe Root struggled uncharacteristically for 18 from 37 balls – and going on to share an increasingly aggressive stand of 150 in 117 balls with captain Harry Brook.

Brook made 77 and Jordan Cox, picked in the place of the injured Jos Buttler, added a 52-ball 76 to lift England to 355-7.

That always appeared a match-winning total on a surface offering bounce for the pace bowlers and turn for the spinners.

Sri Lanka crumbled to 132 all out in 29.1 overs, giving England a 223-run win and their biggest ODI victory against the tourists.

It meant England signed off their summer, one that included off-field issues, the end of Bazball, Ben Stokes’ retirement and Root’s surprise return as Test skipper, with a fifth successive series win amid the madness across formats.

The Prem: Leicester Tigers 38-40 Saracens – Rotimi Segun double seals Sarries win

Published

on

Saracens got out of the blocks fast with two converted tries in the opening 10 minutes from Argentina flanker Juan Martin Gonzalez – making his 50th league appearance – and Tobias Elliott.

Leicester hit back with two of their own from the powerful Solomone Kata, who shrugged off Elliott’s attempted tackle, and Hamer-Webb after a lovely ball by Steward.

With Saracens employing a 6-2 bench split, the loss of centre Olly Hartley early on to an arm injury and the temporary removal of Tobias Elliott to an HIA, meant England flanker Ben Earl was sent on as a centre.

But it made little difference to Saracens’ fluid attack with Elliot Daly, back after a broken arm, crossing out on the left after some lovely interplay.

Leicester responded in the second half with two more tries from Hamer-Webb, both involving impressive new signing Aaron Wainwright in the build-up.

In between Earl, in a more familiar back row role after the withdrawal of Alfie Barbeary at half-time, thundered over for Saracens from Williams’ flat pass.

Leicester took the lead after a nice piece of vision from scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet with a deft chip through for Radwan to score. And as Billy Searle was lining up the conversion, referee Ian Tempest reached for a 20-minute red card after Isiekwe’s shot on Steward in the build-up.

But 14-man Saracens regained the lead with a try from wing Segun after a pinpoint cross-kick by Daly, and after Leicester replacement James Thompson had burrowed over to restore the Tigers lead, Segun struck again wide out on the left with seven minutes left.

Leicester: Steward; Radwan, Kata, Woodward, Hamer-Webb; Searle, van Poortvliet (capt); Vunipola, Moli, Heyes, Carnduff, Henderson, Wainwright, Reffell, Cracknell.

Replacements: Thunder, Haffar, Hurd, Thompson, Moro, Whiteley, Bailey, Hassell-Collins.

Saracens: Daly; Elliott, Tompkins, Hartley, Segun; Burke, Williams; Mawi, Dan, Street, Itoje (capt), Tizard, Isiekwe, Gonzalez, Barbeary.

Replacements: Clarke, Brantingham, Clarey, Sodeke, Michelow, Earl, C Bracken, Malins.

Referee: Ian Tempest
