ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reported Saturday that there are times during practices that he forgets his left knee is coming off an injury.

Mahomes, who underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee last December, spoke to members of the media Saturday for the first time since training camp began. The 10th-year pro continues an expected path toward returning for the team’s Week 1 game, Sept. 14 against the Denver Broncos.

“It feels great. Just pushing every single day, trying to stack days together,” Mahomes said of his knee. “I feel like when you’re tired, sometimes you don’t even think about it. I’m trying to protect it, but at the same time, trying to push it and get myself ready to go for the season.”

Mahomes, who was fully cleared to participate in practices before training camp began, hasn’t been taking it easy on himself. During drills, he’s rolled left and right, taken snaps under center and even shown off his speed while scrambling on a few critical downs in practice.

One example? During Friday’s practice, Mahomes took off while trying to outrun rookie defensive tackle Peter Woods to the sideline in an attempt to gain a first down.

It’s all part of a balance for Mahomes, who says he knows he needs to emphasize getting the ball out quicker this year while running less. That thinking, though, sometimes is challenging when he’s also trying to win a play at all costs.

“I’m not going to lose who I am,” Mahomes said. “But I’m going to try to keep myself smart and keep myself in a position to be out there for my teammates.”

One part of the recovery that’s become more comfortable over time is Mahomes’ knee brace. Though the quarterback fidgeted with it often during non-padded practices, he’s found a better setup recently, keeping the bulky support secure on his leg by placing a spandex leg sleeve over it. Mahomes said that the arrangement does a better job of keeping everything in place, even as he begins to sweat during practice.

It remains doubtful that Mahomes will play during the preseason. Coach Andy Reid said Friday that “percentages probably lean against” the team deploying Mahomes in a preseason game, which the QB said he understands.

“I’m for whatever coach says,” Mahomes said. “As I said, I’m gonna prepare to play. He hasn’t told me anything. So I’ll prepare to play and prepare to get myself ready, and we’ll see where we go from there.”

Mahomes hurt his knee on Dec. 14, meaning it’s been roughly eight months since his injury and subsequent surgery the next day.

Chiefs assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub said he’s been amazed by Mahomes’ recovery from his vantage point at practices.

“I keep watching for anything — any sign of him limping or anything like that. I don’t see anything,” Toub said Saturday. “He just keeps getting better and stronger.  It’s exciting — it’s exciting to see where he’s at.”

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Paris Saint-Germain in their latest pre-season friendly in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Things started badly for Michael Carrick’s side, who conceded in just the second minute on Saturday when Ibrahim Mbaye side-footed home after a cross-goal ball from Dro Fernandez.

There was further frustration as Mason Mount went off with an apparent injury in the 20th minute but Bryan Mbeumo drew them level with a low, left-footed shot from inside the box just past the half-hour after persistent work from Amad.

Early in the second half, goalkeeper Tom Heaton — deputising for an ill Senne Lammens, with Matheus Cunha out for the same reason — went down after coming off his line to clear and had to be replaced by academy graduate Dermot Mee, 23.

The Premier League side could not find another goal against Luis Enrique’s back-to-back European champions, though Mbeumo stung the palms of Matvey Safonov in the 54th minute after cutting into the box. Bruno Fernandes had a late effort from distance which bounced wide.

United have two friendlies left, against Leeds in Dublin on Wednesday and Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, a week today, before their Premier League season opener away to promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22.

Amad makes a statement

Amad furthered his claim to United’s right-sided attacking role today, with a performance full of effervescence and guile.

The Ivory Coast international sprung United out of their early slumber, injecting impetus with his driving runs upfield.  Those darting dribbles gave 16-year-old PSG full-back Axel Koukaba a torrid time, as Amad beat him with ease on both the inside and outside.

But it was Amad’s out-of-possession work that really stood out, as he hassled and harried a makeshift back line into mistakes.

That endeavour brought United their goal, with the 24-year-old nicking the ball in the attacking half and driving to the edge of the box before slipping a neat pass through for Mbeumo to apply a trademark left-footed finish.

With Benjamin Sesko still nursing a shin injury, Mbeumo is deputising through the middle, leaving the right flank open for Amad to make his own. The lack of a recognised centre-forward does give United’s front four greater flexibility, with Mbeumo often drifting wide and allowing Amad to drive infield. Those two have developed an encouraging understanding, combining and rotating to good effect.

Amad looks fit and sharp, fresh from an impressive World Cup in which he scored twice for Ivory Coast before their round of 32 exit at the hands of Norway. Carrick will hope that form carries into the new club season.

Problems playing out from the back

United have beefed up their midfield options in this summer’s transfer window, but issues remain further back down the pitch.

Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven have started all four pre-season games at centre-back, but both looked uneasy in possession here.

They faced a PSG side who, although initially without their full cast of star names, remained fully committed to the high press Luis Enrique demands. Up against that, Maguire and Heaven struggled to manoeuvre the ball quickly in tight spaces. At one point, Heaven carelessly surrendered possession to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before launching into a reckless challenge in an attempt to make amends.

To their credit, Maguire and Heaven had looked solid before today. Heaven’s ball-carrying and Maguire’s long diagonals still give United different ways of progressing the ball, but deft line-breaking passes eluded them here. Leny Yoro, who started this match on the bench, is more accomplished at punching those kinds of passes through the lines, as is the injured-and-absent Lisandro Martinez, although questions remain over the physicality of both.

The bulk of United’s chances today stemmed from counter-attacks or winning the ball high up the pitch, rather than from considered attacks built from the back.

It is a problem Carrick needs to address quickly if his team are to regularly assert themselves in games this season.

How did Tielemans perform on debut?

Almost a full month after he signed from Aston Villa for £35million ($47m), United fans finally got their first glimpse of Tielemans in the red shirt.

Coming on for fellow summer midfield signing Andrey Santos for the final 25 minutes of the 90, Tielemans had limited time to impose himself but still offered a taste of the qualities he can bring to the team.

The 29-year-old Belgium international displayed the trademark composure he was renowned for at Villa. In one of his early involvements, chesting down a flighted ball under pressure in his own third, before calmly releasing it. His contributions were largely subtle, anticipating and mopping up the odd loose ball, and feeding attackers with short, smart passes.

Tielemans was involved in one of United’s biggest chances of the second half, when Joshua Zirkzee was wiped out by Safonov before Tyler Fletcher and Shea Lacey failed to convert into the vacant net. He had kickstarted the move with a clever round-the-corner pass while facing his own goal, shrugging off Vitinha, who was hounding him from behind.

In the 82nd minute, Tielemans then played a delicious outside-of-the-foot pass to Fernandes inside the box, only for the ensuing curled effort to lack conviction.

It was only a brief cameo, but Carrick will have liked what he saw.

Tielemans was calm under pressure, defensively switched on, and provided an extra creative edge from the middle — the exact blend of attributes that convinced United to sign him.

NEW YORK — A year after tearing his Achilles tendon on Yankee Stadium’s outfield grass, legendary closer Mariano Rivera made a triumphant return to Old-Timers’ Day.

“Injuries are gonna happen, and I’m OK with that,” a smiling Rivera said Saturday, as his fellow retirees took batting practice behind him. “It was tough, it was tough. I still have to deal with it. I’m moving better, and I’m here. I’m good enough to be here.”

It was this time last year that Rivera, now 56 years old, crumpled to the ground while trying to field a fly ball off the bat of Willie Randolph. He went to the hospital that day, and ultimately went on to have surgery to repair the injury.

Players who participate in the game are required to sign liability waivers from the Yankees. The team jokingly announced on its social media platforms Saturday morning that it had “reinstated RHP/UTIL/HOF Mariano Rivera (#42) from the 364-day injured list.”

“We are keeping an eye on him,” said Jorge Posada, Rivera’s longtime catcher. “We’re not putting him in center field. He says he’s gonna pitch. I don’t know, his arm looks good.”

Rivera, who is the game’s all-time leader with 652 career saves, spent his entire 19-year career with the Yankees. He was a 13-time All-Star, finished top five in American League Cy Young voting five times and was named World Series MVP in 1999. The five-time World Series champion became the first unanimous selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.

He threw some batting practice prior to the start of the 78th Old Timers’ Day, looping in pitches to former teammate Hideki Matsui.

Rivera recalled using Old-Timers’ Day as a player to speak with the greats who came back to visit. “That was meaningful,” he said. “Whitey Ford. ‘Whitey, how do you do this thing?’ He did it before us.”

Not many current young players, however, take him up on those same opportunities nowadays.

“I wish they’d do it more,” Rivera said. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen that way. But it’s OK to me. I’m not the one that needs it.”

Rivera also expressed frustration at the team’s inability to win a World Series since 2009, when Rivera was still New York’s closer.

“You’re telling me. If you have the answer to that, I would like to hear it,” Rivera said. “It’s been hard. It’s unbelievable. Hopefully this year is the year. It’s not easy, winning championships is not easy. It’s hard. But we have the team.”

Rivera is one the most decorated champions in Yankees history, so he would know what it takes. On this day, he was only there to prove that in a different sense. To show that one devastating injury wouldn’t keep him getting back out there, and playing on this field once again.

“I love this game,” Rivera said. “I am here because I love this game. That’s it. Nothing else.”
