Conor Benn will never box at welterweight again, says trainer Tony Sims.

Benn returned to 147lbs to challenge Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight world championship, only to be dropped heavily and stopped on his feet in the second round.

“There’s no excuses,” Sims told Sky Sports. “It was tough doing the weight of course it was. He was never going to lie about that.

“But he did have a good camp, the sparring the week before went really well, he was in tune, listen he just got caught with a shot. In world boxing, that’s what happens.”

Sims though did confirm that Garcia was Benn’s last fight at welterweight: “Without a shadow of a doubt. He done well making the weight but it wasn’t easy.”

He added: “But that magnitude of fight, that magnitude of money that was on the table, he wouldn’t have got that anywhere else, fighting anybody else. So sometimes you’ve got to take risks.”

Benn’s trainer was surprised the stoppage in the Garcia fight came when it did.

“It was a fantastic shot that he [Benn] got caught with and he done well jumping up from it really,” Sims said.

“I thought he done the right thing, Conor. He grabbed hold of him, held him and he was slipping and sliding on the ropes.

“I think the stoppage was a bit premature but the actual shot that nailed him was a great shot.

“It is what it is, you’re not going to make any excuses for that.

“It was just a shame a fight at that magnitude wasn’t allowed to go a little bit longer.”

Benn moving up to middleweight or super-middleweight could pave the way for a third fight against Chris Eubank Jr.

The sons of great rivals Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank, Benn and Eubank Jr boxed twice at middleweight last year. Benn lost the first but won the second bout. A deciding third contest could be held.

“That fight’s always going to be there, whether it be a year’s time or 10 years’ time. Because of the names together the fight will always be there,” Sims said.

“Whether Conor will want to do that or Chris will want to do that in the future, I don’t know but that fight will always be there. The two names will always be combined together.

“But I don’t think you’ll see Conor talking much about boxing for a little while yet,” Sims added.

“I think he needs to have a rest from boxing completely at the moment,” Sims added. “Don’t get me wrong, financially he’s set up for life but I think he’s burnt out as well at the same time, mentally and physically.”

Bo Nix crossed for a touchdown from close range with 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Denver Broncos came from 16-0 down at half-time to beat the Los Angeles Rams 30-26.

Quarterback Nix’s keeper from inches outside the goal line capped a wild final five minutes that included a 66-yard pick-6 by Denver and a quick touchdown response by Los Angeles.

After Nix put the Broncos (2-1) in front by reaching over the scrum with both hands gripping the football, Matthew Stafford, whose 17 comebacks in the last 2 minutes are the most by any active quarterback, drove the Rams to the Denver 14, where he spiked the ball with 2 seconds left.

A false start moved the ball back to the 19, the Rams (1-2) sent out five receivers but safety Talanoa Hufanga secured his second interception of the night – this one in the end zone – to seal the win for the home side.

The Rams dominated Denver before halftime, outgaining the Broncos by more than 200 yards in the first half while piling up 17 first downs to five, outrushing them 87 yards to 21 and besting them 186 yards to 46 through the air.

But it was only 16-0 at halftime because the Rams kept stalling and settling for field goals after Stafford hit tight end Tyler Higbee with a 5-yard touchdown throw on the Rams’ second possession.

The Broncos went three-and-out to start the second half but finally revved up their sputtering offense and cut their deficit in half on Nix’s 5-yard strike to Bryant and 2-point conversion pass to Jaylen Waddle on a throw between the hands of Wallace midway through the third quarter.

The Broncos tied it on another touchdown and 2-pointer. Nate Adkins caught an 8-yard throw from Nix, who found Bryant again to tie the game heading into the final period.

Talanoa Hufanga’s 66-yard pick-6 with 4:49 left in the game gave Denver its first lead at 23-19. Hufanga jumped in front of running back Kyren Williams, cradled Stafford’s pass and weaved his way down the field and into the end zone.

Just four plays later, however, Stafford hit Konata Mumpfield from 48 yards out when cornerback Riley Moss fell down, restoring the Rams’ lead at 26-23.

Nix drove Denver 65 yards in 10 plays with the aid of three defensive penalties and, with the ball nearly touching the goal line, leapt over the pile for the go-ahead TD. Nix had completions of 39 and 21 yards on that drive, finishing the evening with 17 completions for 186 yards and two touchdowns to accompany a first-half interception.

Stafford, on the other hand, finished 30 for 55 for 390 yards. He threw 32 passes in the first half, the most of his career. With Puka Nacua out again with a hip injury, Davante Adams had seven receptions for 137 yards, giving him 15 catches for 332 yards over his last two games, the best such stretch of his career.

The Tony Carroll-trained gelding has been in the form of his life, winning on his last two starts. The first came over course and distance by half a length, before he bolted up by over five lengths at Bath.

The handicapper has not missed him, as he has been raised ten pounds since these wins, but the manner in which he won at Bath suggests that he holds strong claims in rounding off a hat-trick of wins.

Newfangled perhaps poses the biggest threat having won this race last season off just a one-pound lower mark. He has hit form at the right time, finishing a creditable third at Windsor last time out.

Course-specialist Dion Baker has found it tough from a mark of 73, a rise of 36 pounds since beginning his winning run at the track in late May. He holds a chance, having fallen two pounds in the handicap, and On The Inlet could be competitive if he can resume his early-season progression back down in class.

2.25 Newton Abbot – Dovecote fourth Matiwo returns

Dovecote fourth Matiwo returns in the Jodie Standing’s Point-To-Point Recruits Novices’ Hurdle.

Matiwo looked a promising juvenile hurdler last season having won a decent Newbury novice in taking fashion before finishing a brilliant fourth in the Grade Two Dovecote Hurdle where he travelled like one of the best in the race. That day he beat some exciting types including subsequent Grade One Top Novices’ Hurdle winner, Storming George.

His current form and unexposed profile puts him well above his opposition and he should prove very tough to beat on seasonal reappearance.

Ride Like A Girl looked promising after wind surgery when winning in May but has not progressed since. If coming on for his last run following a short break, he could be competitive with experience and fitness onside.

Scott’s Legacy would pose the chief threat if taking to obstacles on hurdle debut, having won impressively in a good bumper at Southwell in March.

Pappano contains a lot of ability having been rated 96 on the flat and contested this year’s Triumph hurdle for Willie Mullins. He has not shaped with much promise on two hurdling starts and raced too keenly last time out, and now has plenty to prove.

4.55 Wolverhampton – Record-breaking 1-33 loser Najidi Storm faces Wootz

Najidi Storm was mightily impressive on debut when scoring with by half a length with a taking turn of foot. That novice has worked out well with two next-time-out winners, including the subsequent Cambridgeshire fourth, Gavriel. He then seemed to dislike heavy conditions at Goodwood when becoming the shortest-priced loser in British racing history at 1-33.

He is brother to St Leger winner Logician, and half-brother to smart performer Okeechobee, so contains plenty of scope for further improvement.

Opposition is stiff with the exciting Wootz sure to prove a stern rival.

Wootz caught the eye with a striking six-and-a-half-length victory on debut before being well fancied at Windsor, but he hung left badly and could not quite overcome the smart Song Of The Clouds. He can continue his progression with more experience under his belt.

Al Jolson won nicely at the second time of asking and Shadow Boxer is sure to come on for the experience and the extra furlong up in trip after staying on, on debut in April.
