CHICAGO — Cincinnati Reds closer Emilio Pagán was carted off the field after his first pitch in the ninth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.
Pagán came into the tied game in the ninth to face Cubs leadoff man Nico Hoerner. After his first pitch, he immediately grabbed at the back of his right leg and hopped around before falling to the ground. Athletic trainers rushed to his side and called for a cart to help him off the field.
After the game, the club announced Pagán had suffered a left hamstring injury and will be reevaluated tomorrow.
The 34-year-old blew a save in Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Cubs, allowing a leadoff triple and walk-off home run. Entering Tuesday, he was 2-1 with a 6.43 ERA and six saves this season. Pagán re-signed with the Reds over the winter, inking a two-year deal worth $20 million.
On April 14, Pagán recorded his fifth save of the season in a Reds victory over the San Francisco Giants, but the TV cameras showed him grimacing as left fielder Will Benson squeezed the final out. Pagán said the next day that he’d been dealing with hamstring pain, but didn’t require a stint on the IL.
