Fox Sports and streaming service Fox One posted a job Tuesday that any soccer fanatic or die-hard sports fan could only dream of: watching and generating content around the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup and getting paid to do it.

When the network partnered with job-listing site Indeed and revealed details for the role, Chief World Cup Watcher, their idea was to lure in as many sports fans as possible to boost digital engagement around the biggest tournament in the Cup’s history. As big a sport as soccer is around the world, Fox’s primary focus is hiring someone who enjoys the aura of big sporting events, such as March Madness or the Masters.

“It’s obviously a little irreverent to hire for a job like this, but we want to have somebody who’s going to enjoy the pop-culture moment more than the soccer moment,” Robert Gottlieb, Fox Sports president of marketing, told The Athletic. “We wanted this to just be fun. The World Cup is so broad, and it reaches beyond just hardcore soccer fans.”

The network announced the partnership with Indeed, which touts itself as the world’s top job site, as part of a newly launched product. The candidate, who will earn a $50,000 salary, will be tasked with watching all 104 World Cup matches from a comfortable couch inside a glass-enclosed, living room-like cube in Times Square over 39 days and creating interactive content to be posted on Fox’s social media platforms.

There are still many unknowns regarding the role, and Gottlieb says Fox will reveal details and expectations in the final rounds of the interviews. But one thing is for sure: Plenty of soccer is expected to be watched, especially during the group stage when the tournament gets underway, with three to four matches played in a day. Fox is hoping to hire a candidate digitally and socially savvy enough to produce content around these games, whether an MLS player appears in the enclosed space or a pizza delivery guy wants to feed content. Fox also expects the candidate to interact with people in Times Square.

“They will have to have a strong constitution, but if it’s somebody who loves sports and that tournament vibe, then they’ll be psyched for those long days,” Gottlieb said. “At the end of the day, it’s a job interview, so we’re going to have to select the person that we think is going to do the best job in there.”

Indeed wouldn’t disclose how many applicants it has already received but said candidates have already begun posting videos about it on social media, which is one of the requirements. Gottlieb said he has already received emails from “clever” candidates who have figured out how to reach him. Indeed views the opportunity as a “perfect partnership,” and the company hopes the role generates more job-posting opportunities within sports media.

“We looked at it as a win-win to participate in this huge, culturally relevant moment and showcase what we can do,” Indeed vice president of marketing Jennifer Warren told The Athletic.

Indeed is accepting applications through May 17, and the hired applicant will be announced June 6 during Fox’s broadcast of the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees game.
