There are just three chances left for Chelsea’s exciting academy striker Shumaira ‘Shim’ Mheuka to gain some Premier League action this season.

While senior squad members increasingly look like they cannot wait for the campaign to end after six straight defeats — and a solitary goal scored en route — Mheuka will be hoping to secure a belated chance to impress in the top division.

His lack of game time for the first team has been a bit of a mystery. The 18-year-old has scored an impressive 25 goals, and supplied four assists, in 30 appearances for various academy sides in 2025-26. That includes 18 goals in 19 appearances for the Under-21s in Premier League 2, plus five in six for the Under-19s in their UEFA Youth League campaign.

A measure of his maturity is the fact he was named captain on over 20 occasions.

To further highlight why Mheuka is seen as a forward with great potential, he has also found the net 13 times in 10 matches for England Under-19s this term.

Sources familiar with the situation, speaking anonymously to The Athletic to protect relationships, describe Mheuka as a coach’s dream because he is so focused and constantly working on his game.

He is also not someone to get carried away by his success — far from it, in fact. Another source reveals how Mheuka is hard on himself if he has not found the net, believing he has had a bad match regardless of what else he has done over the 90 minutes. This is a player who set himself a target of reaching 20 goals by mid-season after making a good start to the academy season.

At the end of January, he had reached 19.

Mheuka, who joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion for an initial £1million ($1.4m) in 2022, is obviously not the finished article. That was evident during the PL2 play-off defeat to Tottenham last week. After a strong first half where he put Chelsea in front with a superb finish, albeit also hitting one easy chance against the bar, Mheuka went missing after the interval as Spurs came back to win 3-1.

Even so, there are far more good examples of his progress this term than bad, and he has a record worthy of first-team opportunities. And yet, despite Chelsea’s poor form and injury issues throughout the campaign, the striker has not been named in a matchday squad for a Premier League game.

That is not to say he has not featured at all. He came on as a substitute in the Carabao Cup ties against Lincoln City and, most notably, the first leg of the semi-final versus Arsenal. His last outing was away at Hull City in the FA Cup three months ago. He also had the experience of being on the bench for the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie at home to Paris Saint-Germain.

However, his game time amounts to just 31 minutes. That return would be deemed pretty acceptable if this was his breakthrough year. But Mheuka made five appearances, totalling 128 minutes, for Chelsea last season. There was a start at FC Copenhagen in the last 16 of the UEFA Conference League, too.

Given his performances for the youth sides, it seems odd that the numbers have gone down rather than up.

There are some caveats to the lack of opportunity.

Chelsea’s troubled season, which has seen head coaches Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior leave in the space of three months, was never going to be an ideal environment to give youth a chance.

Mheuka has also surely been affected by the club’s decision to recall Marc Guiu on loan from Sunderland at the end of the summer window following Nicolas Jackson’s loan to Bayern Munich. Guiu is just two years older but also quite raw, having made only six appearances for Barcelona before moving to Stamford Bridge for €6million (£5.2m; $7m) in 2024. He has played 16 times for Chelsea (630 minutes) this season.

Guiu is third in the pecking order behind top scorer Joao Pedro and Liam Delap respectively. The latter has been a big disappointment since joining from Ipswich Town for £30m last summer — he has scored only three goals — but few clubs will want to depreciate and demoralise an asset by playing an academy player ahead of them.

Still, interim head coach Calum McFarlane was put in charge after Rosenior’s sacking last month and this could be to Mheuka’s advantage. Before being promoted to Rosenior’s backroom staff in January, McFarlane was in charge of the under-21s.

McFarlane started another highly rated under-21s player, Jesse Derry, against Nottingham Forest on Monday. Granted, Chelsea were without four wingers through injury, but he still opted to give the youngster a try. The quartet of attackers Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho, Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens are all either highly doubtful or unavailable for the match at Liverpool on Saturday, too. Derry will also be missing, having gone off in the first half of the Forest game with concussion.

Perhaps he will consider Mheuka an attacking option from the bench. Chelsea were certainly lacking on that front against Forest, given they had five defenders, two defensive-minded midfielders and a backup goalkeeper from whom to choose other than Delap.

McFarlane was at Kingsmeadow Stadium for the Spurs game last week to see the youngsters in action. Earlier in the day, he had been asked at a press conference if players like Mheuka would be in his thoughts for the final matches.

“Yeah, good question,” he replied. “There’s a lot of young talent in Cobham. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them for six months. So, I know them really well. They’re training with us all the time. They could definitely make a step up.”

It would certainly send Mheuka a positive message at an important period. He has just one year left on the first pro deal he signed in 2024, although the club have the option to extend for another year. Sources familiar with the issue and speaking anonymously to The Athletic say both the club and the player are relaxed about the situation and that they will sit down to discuss a longer-term extension, possibly as soon as this summer.

Mheuka is also being earmarked to go out on loan in 2026-27 in order to gain more regular experience of senior football. The subject was raised as a possibility in January, but all parties agreed he would be better off maintaining his goalscoring momentum in the academy.

He is clearly a player of some promise. Perhaps Chelsea should find a slot in the remaining league games to let him show it.
