Netherlands MotoGP: Ai Ogura wins maiden race in Assen after Marco Bezzecchi crash
Japan’s Ai Ogura won his maiden MotoGP race in the Netherlands as Marco Bezzecchi was taken to hospital after a heavy crash.
Italian Bezzecchi, who was leading the championship going into the race in Assen, crashed at over 200km/hr on lap three and was transferred for further examinations after initial treatment at the circuit’s medical centre.
His Aprilia team said the 27-year-old, who missed last week’s race in Brno through suspension for an altercation with a race marshal, was conscious with no major physical or neurological damage, but suffering from “intense pain”.
Trackhouse rider Ogura passed his team-mate Raul Fernandez late to win by more than two seconds for the first Japanese victory since Makoto Tamada triumphed in 2004.
“It’s fantastic, I don’t have much to say but I’m really very happy,” said Ogura, 25. “Many thanks to my team.”
It was a reverse of the result from Saturday’s sprint race which Fernandez won by 0.362 seconds.
The Spaniard’s compatriot Jorge Martin finished third after starting from pole and he now leads the championship standings, with Bezzecchi seven points behind in second and Ogura up to fourth.
Seven-time world champion Marc Marquez came under pressure from Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia and KTM’s Pedro Acosta in an early battle for fourth place, before Acosta retired with a problem in his right hand on lap 13.
Bagnaia retired two laps later, and Marquez slipped behind VR46 Racing Team’s Fabio di Giannantonio and his brother Alex Marquez, eventually crossing the line in sixth spot before being penalised a place for exceeding track limits on the last lap.

Ben Stokes: England captain retires from international cricket during ongoing New Zealand Test
England captain Ben Stokes has made a stunning announcement to end his international career at the conclusion of the ongoing third Test against New Zealand.
All-rounder Stokes, one of the finest cricketers to ever play for England, was in the middle of a bowling spell at Trent Bridge when a statement was released confirming his intention to end a 15-year international career.
Incredibly, with the first delivery after news of his retirement was made public, Stokes took a wicket, having Zak Foulkes caught at second slip.
The 35-year-old missed England’s second Test after being involved in an incident in a London nightclub.
Before his return to the leading the team in Nottingham, he referred only to leading the team “this week”.
And Stokes told his England team-mates of his decision before the fourth day of the deciding Test against the Black Caps.
Clearly emotional as he spoke in the England dressing room, Stokes said: “The reasons can wait, why, but I’ve had many trips to the well before for this team, for you blokes, for people beforehand and I’ve got one more trip to do.
“The only that I ask, please, is can everyone do the same.
“We’ve got a lot of hard work to do and the only thing I want is to be able to walk off that field, regardless of the result, knowing that I’ve had this group give everything for the last two days.
“That’s the only thing I want, for everyone to give it not only for me, selfishly, but also for this team.
“I’ve got the emotional side out of it. Now it’s time to go to work. Please, everyone else come with me.”
