PGA Tour, DP World Tour & Asian Tour alliance puts pressure on LIV

Published

on

LIV Golf has suffered another blow with the announcement of a global alliance between the leading men’s professional tours.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy has welcomed the partnership that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour have struck with the Asian Tour, which had been linked with the LIV circuit.

LIV, whose next event starts at the JCB Club in Staffordshire on Thursday, is already reeling from the withdrawal of Saudi Arabian financial backing after the Kingdom ploughed in more than £3.75bn to bankroll its first three years.

The PGA Tour and DP World Tour’s new partnership with the Asian Tour was confirmed in meetings at last week’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

“Positive news,” McIlroy said in a social media post. “Great to see the respective tours working together for the good of international golf.”

The PGA and DP World Tours already had a strategic alliance which will now be extended until at least 2029. That deal, which could have expired next year, had been under discussion in recent months.

The Asian Tour partnered with LIV in 2021 prior to the launch of the breakaway league the following year. It offered a promotion and relegation pathway to and from LIV’s series of $30m tournaments.

Under the old deal, the top two from the Asian Tour’s order of merit gained promotion to LIV for its 2026 season.

The Asian Tour’s Saudi-funded International Series also provided lucrative playing opportunities for LIV’s leading stars who had been banned by the PGA Tour.

They were controversial events because some were staged in Europe, infringing on territory that had previously been the traditional domain of the DP World Tour.

Taking immediate effect, the PGA and DP World Tours, through their existing strategic alliance, will partner with the Asian Tour to provide commercial and playing opportunities.

There will also be pathways for the leading golfers in Asia to allow them playing rights from the 2027 DP World Tour season.

Certain events will return to being co-sanctioned between the DP World and Asian circuits, as was the case prior to the latter’s alliance with LIV.

New York’s WFAN, other top local sports-radio stations coming to SiriusXM

Published

on

In a move that would have been unthinkable a short time ago, pioneering New York City sports-radio station WFAN and 41 other stations owned by Audacy, one of the nation’s leading audio and radio companies, will be available on SiriusXM, sources briefed on the deal told The Athletic.

The move seemingly ends a long-standing rivalry between SiriusXM and terrestrial radio: In 2008, Chris “Mad Dog” Russo left his legendary partnership with Mike Francesa on WFAN, breaking up “Mike & the Mad Dog” to start his own channel, “Mad Dog Sports Radio” on SiriusXM. Russo followed legendary morning radio host Howard Stern, who left traditional radio for an exclusive show on SiriusXM that he launched in 2006.

Now, listeners can hear Mad Dog and his cohorts, as well as WFAN, without switching platforms.

The SiriusXM-Audacy agreement is for sports and news stations around the country, encapsulating 42 in total in 29 markets. The 23 sports-radio stations include WIP in Philadelphia, WEEI in Boston, The Score in Chicago and The GAME in San Francisco.

Access is expected to begin Sept. 1.

Audacy is receiving a licensing fee in the deal. The exact terms are unknown. SiriusXM is able to sell its own ads when listeners tune into the local radio stations on its platforms.

SiriusXM is the home of most live sports, from the NFL to the NBA to MLB to the NHL to college sports. Besides Mad Dog, it offers sports specific channels on the NFL and other sports. The partnership now fills a longtime gap in SiriusXM’s inventory, which was local sports programming.

All Audacy stations will be available on the SiriusXM app, while some, including WFAN, will be available through in vehicles as well. The Audacy stations will still be accessible on all of its current platforms, including radios, the Audacy app and connected-home devices, like Amazon’s Alexa.

As part of the sharing agreement, SiriusXM personalities, like Russo, may appear as cross-promotional guests on WFAN and other Audacy stations. Top radio personalities are expected to show up on SiriusXM as guests as well.
