Toei Animation Produces New ‘Ginga Tetsudou 999’ Theatrical Anime Adaptation

Published

on

Toei Animation announced a new theatrical anime adaptation for Ginga Tetsudou 999 (Galaxy Express 999) anime franchise on Saturday. The new film features a story concept by Rintarou (Ginga Tetsudou 999 (Movie), Sayonara Ginga Tetsudou 999 director) and animation production by Toei Animation.

Ginga Tetsudou 999 (Galaxy Express 999), based on the sci-fi manga by Leiji Matsumoto, was serialized in Shounen King magazine from January 1977 to October 1981. Shounen Gahousha published the manga in 18 volumes.

After a 15-year hiatus, Matsumoto resumed the series with a sequel manga in 1996. It ran in Big Gold magazine until 1999 before continuing irregularly online.

Produced by Toei Animation, the television anime aired in 113 episodes from September 1978 to March 1981. The studio also produced the theatrical movies Ginga Tetsudou 999 (Galaxy Express 999), Sayonara Ginga Tetsudou 999: Andromeda Shuuchakueki (Adieu Galaxy Express 999), and Ginga Tetsudou 999: Eternal Fantasy (Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy).

Synopsis

Tetsurou Hoshino is a young street urchin who desperately wants to replace his human body with an android body, which would grant him immortality and the social freedom the androids have. Normally this is incredibly expensive but it has long been rumored that if you board the Galaxy Express headed for the Andromeda Galaxy, at the end of the line is a planet where they are given out for free.

After seeing his mother murdered by an Android Count, he has no reason to remain on his home planet and nothing to hold him back. Now, not only seeking the android body of his dreams but also a way to avenge his loss, he begins to search for a way to board the train alone.

Then he meets Maetel, a mysterious woman who offers him a ticket aboard the train if he will be her companion for the journey.

Their journey will take them to planet after planet, each strange and new, and each stop along the way being an opportunity for Tetsurou to reflect on being human, human actions, and the prospect of immortality. During their travels Tetsurou and Maetel meet, amongst others, Emeraldas and Harlock.

The 113-episode Galaxy Express 999 television anime series aired from 1978-1981. An anime film alternate retelling premiered in 1979. The franchise then spawned multiple other movies, specials, and OVAs. The original 18-volume manga ran from 1977-1981.

The story of the anime and manga follows a young orphan named Tetsuro as he travels with a mysterious woman named Maetel through the galaxy on a space train, in the hopes of obtaining a cybernetic body. The train stops at many planets along the way, often leading to adventures for the two.

Masako Ikeda, the voice of Maetel in the franchise, died on March 3 at 87 years old. Franchise composer Nozomi Aoki died on February 20 at 94 years old.

Yuzuru Shimazaki‘s Ginga Tetsudō 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey (Galaxy Express 999 Another Story: Ultimate Journey) manga, which retells the story of Matsumoto’s original manga, launched in Akita Shoten‘s Champion RED magazine in March 2018, and ended on February 19.

A Leiji Matsumoto exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of Galaxy Express 999 has been touring Japan since June 2025 and has so far visited Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Aichi, and will visit Saitama in the future.

Anime Limited Licenses Banana Fish Anime – News

Anime Limited announced on Friday it has licensed the television anime of Akimi Yoshida‘s Banana Fish manga in the United Kingdom, North America, and France. The company plans to release the series on Blu-ray Disc in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France in early 2027.

Netflix had announced earlier this month that it will stream the anime in “select regions” starting on August 12. Anime Limited confirmed the anime will be available on Netflix in the U.K., Ireland, the U.S., Canada, and France.

Netflix‘s stream will include English and French dubs. Anime Limited confirmed the English and French dub casts Netflix previously announced for the two main characters, and stated it will announce the full cast for the series at a later date.

The anime was previously available with subtitles on Amazon Prime Video, but left the service recently.

Amazon Prime Video‘s streams of the anime previously listed “AI beta” dubs for its English and Latin American Spanish dubs in late November. ANN reached out to Aniplex regarding the dubs on November 28 but did not receive a statement. Prime Video removed the dubs in December.

The anime premiered on Fuji TV‘s Noitamina block in July 2018. The anime adapted the entire manga, but took place in modern day New York, instead of in the 1980s when the original manga took place. Amazon Prime Video streamed the series as it aired with English subtitles.

Viz Media published the manga in English, and it describes the story:

Vice City: New York in the 80s… Nature made Ash Lynx beautiful; nurture made him a cold ruthless killer. A child runaway brought up as the adopted heir, hatchet man, and sex toy of “Papa” Dino Golzine, the East Coast’s Corsican crime lord, Ash is now at the rebellious age of seventeen – forsaking the kingdom of power and riches held out by the devil who raised him, preferring a code he can live with among a small but loyal gang of street thugs. But his “Papa” can’t simply let him go – not when the hideous secret that drove Ash’s older brother mad in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into his insatiably ambitious hands.

It’s exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okamura, a pure-hearted young photographer from Japan, to arrive in NYC and make Ash Lynx’s acquaintance… and fall with him into the bloody whirlpool of pride, greed, lust and wrath unleashed by the enigma code-named Banana Fish

Hiroko Utsumi (Free!) directed the anime at MAPPA, and Hiroshi Seko (Ajin, Mob Psycho 100, Inuyashiki Last Hero) was in charge of the series scripts. Akemi Hayashi (Fruits Basket, Peacemaker, Doukyusei -Classmates-) designed the characters. Shinichi Osawa (Ninja Slayer From Animation) composed the music. Akitsugu Hisagi (key animator for Kids on the Slope, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG) was the show’s “hard-boiled supervisor.”
