Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers tore his meniscus, the team announced Sunday, placing him on the 10-day injured list retroactive to July 25. In the latest blow during a rough year for the last-place Athletics, Langeliers could miss the rest of the season.

The options for contending teams looking to bolster their catching position on the trade market were already thin before Langeliers’ injury. On the surface, Langeliers, 28, was a sensible trade target; a good player on a bad team. His trade outlook before the injury, however, contained some nuance; most notably, Langeliers is under club control through 2028, the year the Athletics expect to open their new $2 billion ballpark on the Las Vegas Strip, and a year in which they expect to contend.

Before the injury, Langeliers was unlikely to get traded, but some teams were hoping he’d nonetheless become more available.

Regardless, the injury takes him off the trade block. Langeliers, an All-Star, is hitting .263/.332/.497 with 23 home runs, while also being a top defensive catcher. With Langeliers out, the Athletics recalled catcher Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas. Jonah Heim, another trade candidate, is set for the bulk of action in Langeliers’ place.

The Athletics (44-60) have lost seven of their last 10 games. They own MLB’s worst run differential (-122), mostly because of poor pitching. They have also dealt with other injuries, including Brent Rooker’s season-ending surgery.

With Langeliers out of the picture, other catchers who are trade candidates include Hunter Goodman (Colorado Rockies), Ryan Jeffers (Minnesota Twins) and Tyler Stephenson (Cincinnati Reds).

The Arizona Cardinals and quarterback Jacoby Brissett have agreed to a restructured contract for the 2026 season, a league source confirmed to The Athletic. ESPN was first to report the deal.

The new deal will pay him $15.5 million, per ESPN’s Ian Rapoport, with the opportunity to earn $21 million. Brissett does not have an agent and negotiated the deal on his own.

Brissett is expected to be the Cardinals’ Week 1 starter after stepping in last season after Kyler Murray was injured in a Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Murray did not return the rest of the season.

Brissett, 33, last season took over for Murray and put up strong numbers, but Arizona went 1-11 in games in which he started. The lack of protection and running game did not help. Nor did the defense.

He threw for 3,366 yards with 23 touchdown passes and eight interceptions, while completing 64.9 percent of his attempts. His completions (315), attempts (485), yards and TD passes were all career bests.

Perhaps the best thing Brissett did was earn the respect of teammates. Tight end Trey McBride caught 11 touchdown passes, more than he had grabbed in his previous three seasons combined. Michael Wilson had his best year. Marvin Harrison Jr. had good moments before injuries limited his availability. Wanting to get paid like an NFL starter, Brissett over the offseason did not attend Arizona’s voluntary workouts. He did show up for mandatory minicamp but chose not to participate.
