EXCLUSIVE: Amazon is developing a new half-hour comedy from stand-up Atsuko Okatsuka and Josh Rabinowitz, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Amazon declined comment. Plot details and the show’s title are being kept under wraps, though we’re told it’s a starring vehicle for Okatsuka about modern marriage.

Hiro Murai will exec produce for Super Frog, alongside Ramy Youssef for Cairo Cowboy, Entertainment 360, Okatsuka and Rabinowitz.

Named to our list of the Comics Who Won 2025, Okatsuka is a comedian, a writer, and actor currently touring internationally with her Big Bowl Tour. She’s coming off the release of her sophomore special, Father, which premiered on Hulu and Disney+ and won a Webby Award for Best Comedy & Stand-Up. Okatsuka’s first special, HBO’s The Intruder, was named the best debut comedy special of 2022 by the New York Times and won a Gracie Award for Best Special. Next year, her third special will premiere on Netflix.

On the acting front, Okatsuka’s credits include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Pixar’s Elio, Jonah Hill’s Apple flick Outcome, and Judd Apatow’s upcoming Universal comedy The Comeback King, co-written by and starring Glen Powell. In a recent episode of Deadline’s Comedy Means Business podcast, she spoke to her ambition to crack film & TV, citing Lucille Ball as an inspiration. She was just named Breakout Comedy Star of the Year at Just for Laughs and is repped by Entertainment 360, CAA, and attorney Melissa Fox at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Rabinowitz is a writer-producer whose credits include the Ilana Glazer projects Babes and Broad City, Youssef’s breakout Hulu series Ramy and Amazon animated comedy #1 Happy Family USA, and The Carmichael Show. He is repped by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.

Murai just scored his latest pair of Emmy nominations as director and executive producer of Widow’s Bay, the breakout horror-comedy from Apple, which leads all new programs in noms this year with 19. Among his other upcoming projects is the Sadie Sink-led limited series The Marriage Plot for FX, with whom he recently reupped his first-look deal. He is repped by Untitled Entertainment, UTA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

As a producer, Youssef’s recent credits include his HBO special Ramy Youssef: In Love and the Amazon series #1 Happy Family USA, which he created with Pam Brady. As an actor, recent credits include HBO’s Mountainhead and an appearance on Apple’s The Studio. He is repped by WME, Entertainment 360, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes.

With his series take of Stephen King’s Carrie set to hit Prime Video on Oct. 7, Mike Flanagan will be back in business with Amazon MGM Studios soon again for the series adaptation of British miniature war-game Warhammer 40,000. Deadline hears that Flanagan is in talks to join the series as an EP. It’s still being determined if the Doctor Sleep filmmaker will be showrunning the Henry Cavill passion project.

Warhammer 40,000 is set in the far future, where humanity stands at the edge of what might be its brightest future, or its darkest age. The threats to humankind’s empire are many: traitors driven by the fires of ambition, alien empires sworn to reclaim the stars and the corruption of reality by malevolent gods.

Back in March, Flanagan inked a multi-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios to develop and produce original series for the studio, the first in the pact being Carrie. In TV, Flanagan has served as creator, writer, director and showrunner of The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club and The Haunting of Hill House.

Flanagan wrote, directed, edited and produced eight feature films, including Stephen King adaptations Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, as well as Ouija: Origin of Evil, Hush, Before I Wake, Oculus, Absentia and 2024’s The Life of Chuck, which won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is writing, directing and producing The Exorcist: Martyrs for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, which stars Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Diane Lane, Carla Cugino and Laurence Fishburne.

Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso partnered with Cavill to secure the Warhammer 40,000 IP before they took it to Amazon. Vertigo executive produces with Cavill and GAW’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill alongside Amazon MGM Studios.
