Saban Takes North America For UK Haunted House Horror ‘The Caged’

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Jeffrey Scott Collins’ The Caged starring Tamzin Merchant (Carnival Row), Edmund Kingsley (Dirty Angels), Raffiella Chapman (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) and newcomer Callen Carter.

Inspired by true events, the horror film follows a family that is terrorized by a dark presence after they move into a quaint cottage in an unassuming English coastal town.

Uncovering its history, they discover their once dream home lies on the site of a medieval prison set aside for those accused of witchcraft, including England’s most notorious witch, hanged in 1582.

The deal was negotiated by Steve Break on behalf of Saban Films, and by The Coven on behalf of the filmmakers. The Coven is also handling international sales.

Collins directed the film from a script he also wrote. Producers are Joseph C. Grano (Dolly) at Set Point Entertainment; Collins (Above the Line), under his Seems Reel Entertainment; Gaby Whyte Hart (Just Play Dead) at Fearless Productions; and Llewelynn Greeff (Young Guns) at Dark Matter Studios.

Priscilla Smith and Kendall Anlian (Terrifier) of The Coven serve as Executive Producers, alongside Adam Margules (The Vigil) through his company, Angry Adam Productions, along with Daniel Hockley, Ian Dawson, Rupert Hollier, Simon Fawcett, Christian Sheedy, Michael Santos, and Ken Davenport. Arran MacLennan, Jed Tune, and Cory Levin serve as Co-producers.

It is Collins’ second feature after Above the Line, which was released in June by Quiver Distribution.

The Caged centers around one of the most extraordinary and terrifying events and places in England’s history. With that as the foundation, it delves into complex family and marital dynamics and explores how they are tested when thrust into a horrifying pressure cooker,” said Collins.

“Much like my favorite horror films, The Caged is very real and grounded, with rich, layered characters, and aims to terrify its audience both physically and psychologically. I’m so thrilled the Saban team loves the film so much, and I can’t wait to work with them, as well as The Coven team, to scare audiences around the world.”

‘Warhammer 40,000’ Animated Series Set At Amazon; Henry Cavill To EP

Published

on

Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Warhammer 40,000 animated event series alongside the upcoming live-action version, sources close to the project confirmed to Deadline. Additionally, Henry Cavill, who is set to star and EP the live-action series, is on board to executive produce. Amazon declined comment,.

The animated series, from Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios and Games Workshop, will be a spinoff of Secret Level, Prime Video’s adult animated anthology series, we’ve learned. The first season featured a “Warhammer 40,000” episode when it aired in late 2024.

The series is co-created and directed by Dave Wilson, who directed Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 episode. John Orloff (Masters of the Air) serves as co-creator alongside Wilson.

Few details are known about the storyline, but we hear it will revolve around The Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines that specialize in hunting down alien threats.

Warhammer 40,000 is set in the far future, where humanity stands at the edge of what might be its brightest future, or its darkest age. The threats to humankind’s empire are many: traitors driven by the fires of ambition, alien empires sworn to reclaim the stars and the corruption of reality by malevolent gods.

Secret Level creator Tim Miller will executive produce for Blur Studios alongside Cavill and Natalie Viscuso. Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee executive produces with Andy Smillie from Games Workshop. The series is being developed in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop.

Amazon Studios secured global rights to the Warhammer 40,000 game from Games Workshop in 2022, which includes film, television and associated merchandising rights.

Deadline’s sister site Variety was first to report the news.

Scott Pelley And Sharyn Alfonsi To Take Columbia Journalism Gigs

Published

on

Scott Pelley and Sharyn Alfonsi, two of the 60 Minutes correspondents ousted in a shakeup at the top rated program in May, have new gigs: Journalists in residence at Columbia University.

Pelley and Alfonsi will work with students via lectures, workshops and special events, and they will each contribute a piece to Columbia Journalism Review, the journalism school said on Monday.

Jelani Cobb, the dean of the Columbia Journalism School, said in a statement, “Their distinguished track records in investigative reporting highlight the amazing opportunity our students will have to learn from them, and we look forward to having Sharyn and Scott with us this year.”

Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega were dropped from 60 Minutes in a shakeup in May that also saw the exit of execuitve producer Tanya Simon and other top producers. Alfonsi earlier protested the last-minute holding of one of her pieces on the notorious CECOT prison, and Vega has claimed that management has attempted to insert political bias into her stories. CBS News has denied Vega’s claim, and the CECOT prison story eventually did air in January, with a new introduction and postscript from Alfonsi.

Pelley was fired after a clash with new 60 Minutes executive producer Nick Bilton. He also claimed interference, telling The New York Times that the management of the network “instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story.” A CBS News spokesperson said that what occurred was the normal back and forth of the editing process.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Opening Beats Endgame for Box Office Record

Published

on

There is a brand new title topping the list for the all-time biggest domestic opening weekend at the box office, as Spider-Man: Brand New Days debut has been adjusted in final numbers and will now surpass Avengers: Endgame, which previously led the way.

Sony Pictures‘ new movie earned $360 million from 4,487 North American screens in Monday actuals, which is up from the $355 million that the studio had projected on Sunday. This leaps past Avengers: Endgame’s previous record of $357.1 million in its domestic opening from April 2019.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven to be a head-spinning success story, as it also set records for the biggest Thursday previews and top Friday opening domestic sum, along with becoming Sony’s best-ever launch. Before the weekend, Sony had initially been projecting a much less dazzling start of $195 million domestic and $465 million global that would have still put the film among the top 10 all-time debuts. Hailing from producers Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, it carries a $225 million production budget.

Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has focused his attention on the audience reaction, rather than whether the movie breaks the record. “There are many, many, many people going to see the movie,” he says. “What’s far more important to me, and what is far more significant, is the response. The audience loved the movie. That’s way more important to me than this record or that record.”

Brand New Day has proven to be a crowd-pleaser, earning an A CinemaScore from audiences and delivering a 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, although its critics score is a tad lower at 90. The movie’s viewership skewed young and male, as 36 percent of the audience fell between ages 18 and 24, while 61 percent of the crowd were men.

Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo also star in the new movie from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. It centers on Marvel Comics’ signature hero as he endures a lonely life without his loved ones before an invisible enemy tracks him down.

In his review for THR, chief film critic David Rooney praised “a never-better Tom Holland.”

Holland’s previous film in the lead role as the web-slinger was Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million worldwide in December 2021. That title falls from its standing as the No. 2 highest-grossing domestic opening weekend ever, thanks to Brand New Day. No Way Home’s impressive success — culminating with its $1.9 billion global total for No. 8 all-time — was seen as tough to replicate, given the buzzy appearances of past Peter Parkers in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, along with the lack of major theatrical competition coming out of COVID.
