Marco Perego, With Zoe Saldaña, Shares Indie Film Love at Locarno Pro

Published

on

“If you decide to be a producer in the independent world, don’t do it for the money.” Producer Marco Perego didn’t mince words during a Locarno Pro keynote appearance. If money is all you care about, “go [work for] a bank.”

The Italian native, conceptual artist and movie lover made his feature directorial debut in 2023 with The Absence of Eden, starring his wife, Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña. Perego then launched the production company Leaf Entertainment with Michael Cerenzie. Its goal: back the best global auteurs to help them get their projects made.

At Cannes this year, Perego had three competition films: Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner Fjord, Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Minotaur, and James Gray’s Paper Tiger.

On Sunday night, he appeared at the 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on stage with Gray, who was honored with the Swiss festival’s Career Leopard ahead of a huge Paper Tiger outdoor screening. Just hours before that, he shared his take on the role of a producer at industry strand Locarno Pro in a session that was well-attended despite the busy weekend. Among the people in the audience was Saldaña.

“Independent film is for people who take risk,” Perego emphasized. “It’s about respecting the vision, and the vision is not yours. … Just let [directors] do what they want.” You want to support them, and you may every now and then help with suggestions, but in general, step back and let the creatives do the magic, he said. Emphasizing the significance and importance of ensuring and maintaining artistic integrity, the producer highlighted: “We need to be sure that we really protect the filmmaker.”

Money may talk, but Perego didn’t talk about money details beyond sharing: “I invest quite a lot.” He signaled that he has no strict rules for the size of investments.

“I’m a disruptor. I’m a radical,” Perego also told the Locarno crowd, adding that he wasn’t afraid of slipping up. “I’m going to fail. I’m going to fail so many times, but I promise, I will stand up.”

Mad World Boards Sales On Venice-Bound Egyptian Drama ‘Al Baraneya’

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Mad World, the film sales arm of Cairo-based Mad Solutions, has acquired worldwide sales rights to Egyptian drama Al Baraneya ahead of its premiere in Venice parallel section Giornate degli Autori.

The debut feature of Dutch-Egyptian filmmaker Ashgan El-Hamus, the film follows the fate of Al Amal, a pregnant young woman living with her extended family in the Egyptian village of Al Baraneya.

When the family is offered the chance to sell their land, long-held certainties begin to unravel, leaving Amal torn between the traditions that shaped her and the promise of a different future in the city.

Produced by Frank Hoeve of Amsterdam-based Baldr Film; Kesmat Elsayed of Berlin-based Seera Films, and Eurydice Gysel of Brussels-based Czar Film, Al Baraneya is a Dutch-Egyptian-Belgian-Saudi co-production.

The acquisition marks Mad World’s second collaboration with Seera’s Elsayed after their collaboration on Mohamed Rashad’s Berlinale 2025-selected The Settlement.

Amsterdam-based Baldr Film has built an international reputation for championing auteur-driven cinema, with recent credits including the Oscar-nominated documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’État; Cannes Grand Prix winner All We Imagine as Light; Willem van Ewijk’s Venice Giornate degli Autori Best European Film winner Alpha, and Torino Film Festival winner The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Al Baraneya is El-Hamus’ feature directorial debut following a series of acclaimed short films, including Birdland. Drawing from her own family’s experiences, she cast her Egyptian relatives alongside actress Reem Amer to create an authentic portrait of family, womanhood, and belonging.

“I wanted to tell a story about belonging, womanhood, and the quiet tension between tradition and change through characters whose relationships feel lived rather than performed,” she says of the film.

“We’re delighted to bring Al Baraneya to international audiences,” said Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, co-founders of Mad Solutions.

“Ashgan El-Hamus has crafted a deeply personal and emotionally resonant debut that reflects the richness of Arab storytelling through a universal lens. We are proud to partner with the filmmakers as the film begins its international journey with its world premiere in Venice.”

Zurich And El Gouna Film Festivals Strike Strategic Partnership

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Switzerland’s Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) and Egypt‘s El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) have struck a strategic partnership, which will see them collaborate on programming and other initiatives.

The alliance will kick off at ZFF’s upcoming 22nd edition, running September 24 to October 4, with the world premiere of feature documentary Dolphins: My Close Encounters, following Swiss marine biologist Angela Ziltener and her decades-long dolphin research conducted in the Red Sea.

The film will then get its MENA Premiere at GFF, running from October 15 to 26, just miles from the coastline where Ziltener first began her groundbreaking research.

ZFF entered a new chapter in 2025 following a management buyout led by CEO Christian Jungen. It has seen its star rise in recent years as a launch-pad for fall releases in Switzerland and key stop-off on the awards seasons circuit for international films. It is the second-largest film festival in the German-speaking world, drawing 135,000 visitors in 2025.

At the same time, it has also forged strong links with other festivals, notably San Sebastian with which it cooperates on industry and festival guests.

GFF was launched in 2017 by Egyptian tycoons Naguib and Samih Sawiris in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna created by latter and has risen to become a key date on the MENA fall festival calendar.

“Samih Sawiris has been familiar with the Zurich Film Festival for many years, and we’ve had inspiring strategic conversations. Now we are joining forces”, said ZFF CEO Christian Jungen.

“This is a true win-win partnership. We can help the El Gouna Film Festival gain access to films and talent while they provide us with invaluable logistical support and guide us on our way to gain new perspectives while navigating the film landscape of Africa and the Middle East. We are excited to collaborate with this dynamic and fast-growing festival.”

Sawiris said the partnership would bolster GFF’s founding mission of connecting regional and international film industries at an event showing world-class cinema and fostering dialogue and social impact.

“Partnering with a festival as prestigious as Zurich marks an exciting extension of this mission, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering meaningful exchange across outstanding cinema and industry leaders,” said Sawiris.

The partners said the new new alliance would also also help connect Middle East and African filmmakers with their European counterparts.

“For the better part of a decade, El Gouna Film Festival has worked tirelessly to give filmmakers in this part of the world a platform for them to collaborate and create films that share stories from the region with the rest of the world,” said GFF Artistic Director Andrew Mohsen.

“Moreover, we have worked to provide countless opportunities for up-and-coming filmmakers to develop their skills and meet with industry leaders from around the world. This partnership with ZFF will facilitate the creation of synergies with others in the industry from various parts of the world.”

“As a film festival, building bridges is one of our key functions,” said ZFF Director Reta Guetg. “We want to connect people who share our beliefs and utilize films as powerful ambassadors of cultural exchange. That is exactly what this new friendship and partnership stands for.”

Dolphins: My Close Encounters

As the first film presented jointly by the two festivals, Dolphins: My Close Encounters connects Zurich and the Red Sea by focusing on nature: Its protagonist Ziltener has been studying the behaviours of wild dolphin populations in the waters off the Egyptian town of El Gouna for years.

Directed by Barny Revill and produced by natural history producer Silverback Films, with Keith Scholey as executive producer, the film traces Ziltener’s more than 15 years diving alongside wild dolphins, slowly gaining a rare window into their lives.

What began as a scientific study became something far more personal, as she found herself drawn into the dolphins’ world and faced with a profound question: who was really observing whom?

Netflix Reunites With Guillaume Canet On ‘Ad Vitam’ Sequel

Published

on

Netflix has announced the start of principal photography on a sequel to 2025 action thriller Ad Vitam, starring Guillaume Canet.

Working titled Ad Vitam Eternam, the new film sees Canet return in the role of ex-elite agent Franck Lazareff who spent the first instalment investigating a deadly conspiracy plot after his pregnant wife was kidnapped by masked men.

Ad Vitam Eternam will pick up from the ending of Ad Vitam in which Canet’s character was released from jail in the final scene after his wife presents evidence clearing his name of trumped up charges related to his personal mission to free her and uncover the instigators of the plot.

The synopsis reads: “After surviving an assassination attempt upon his release from prison, Franck sets out to find out who wants him dead. He goes to hide away with his family in the mountains. But French intelligence services track him down and offer him a deal: a covert mission in exchange for the truth Franck is seeking.”

Ludovic Colbeau-Justin, who enjoyed success with box office language breakout How To Make A Killing starring Franck Dubosc, takes over the director’s seat from Rodolphe Lauga who shot the first film.

Canet co-wrote the screenplay with Maxime Chattam with the collaboration of David Corona.

Further cast returnees include Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes, Zita Hanrot alongside fresh additions Nicolas Duvauchelle,  Sophie Marceau and Mathieu Amalric.

The film is produced by Cabanes Productions, Canet’s joint company with Jean Cottin. It will shoot in the Ile-de-France, Normandy, Savoie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Released on January 10, 2025, Ad Vitam broke into Netflix’s top ten for non-English language films, generating some 54 million views, within the first month of its availability on the platform.
