Great Britain’s Angharad Evans won her first European Championship gold in the 100m breaststroke final in Paris.

The 23-year-old comfortably finished first in a championship record time of one minute and 4.87 seconds, which was also a lifetime best and British record.

Having also broken the championship record in the semi-final, Evans claimed gold ahead of Ireland’s Mona McSharry in second, while Italy’s Benedetta Pilato took bronze.

Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki, who made history for Jersey by claiming gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games last month in Glasgow, was the fastest qualifier in the semi-final of the same event at the European Aquatics Championships.

The 18-year-old’s time of 2:08.60 held off GB team-mate Greg Butler in the first semi-final, with the 25-year-old also progressing to the final.

GB’s Amalie Smith picked up a silver medal in the 400m individual medley final, finishing 0.7secs behind Ireland’s Ellen Walshe, with Poland’s Justina Kozan claiming bronze.

The 16-year-old Smith, who won gold on Monday in the 4x200m freestyle relay, was also part of the part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team that finished fifth.

Another teenager, Italian Sara Curtis, also shone as she broke the women’s 50m backstroke world record with a time of 26.63 seconds.

The 19-year-old bettered the world record set by Australia’s Kaylee McKeown three years ago by 0.23secs in her semi-final.

Solar eclipse: How sporting events like Uefa Super Cup, cricket and European Athletics were affected

Published

on

The most significant solar eclipse since 1999 was visible across the UK and Europe on Wednesday and briefly took attention away from various sporting events in the process.

A total solar eclipse peaked in parts of Spain and Iceland.

In the UK, people could see a partial eclipse with more than 90% of the Sun covered by the Moon depending one where you were.

Whether you were at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, a Hundred cricket match or Aston Villa’s Super Cup game against Paris St-Germain in Austria, sports fans paused to take in the rare sight.

Experts told watchers not to look directly at the Sun without protection, which saw many supporters who did not have glasses come up with home-made solutions.

BBC Sport looks at how some sporting events were affected.
