August 11 marks Mountain Day, the newest national holiday in Japan. The country enacted the first Mountain Day in 2016 for people to enjoy and thank mountains for their blessings. However, the holiday also lands close to the unofficial Obon, or honoring of ancestral spirits, holiday season in Japan. As such, many Japanese people use the holiday to visit their hometowns before the start of Obon. While Mountain Day is a young holiday, the anime and manga worlds are all sending their greetings from the tops of mountains:

Crunchyroll to Release Makoto Shinkai’s New Film Globally, Excluding Most of Asia – News

Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that it has acquired most of the worldwide distribution rights to Makoto Shinkai‘s new feature film. The distribution rights exclude almost all of Asia, but does include India. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures will co-distribute the film.

Crunchyroll did not reveal details about Shinkai’s new film, including its title.

Shinkai stated on social media in November 2025 he has been working on a “new film” alongside “dependable companions,” adding that he could not yet formally announce the work.

Shinkai’s Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) film opened in Japan at #1 in November 2022. The film opened in North America in April 2023. Crunchyroll screened the film in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub.

Suzume ranked at #1 on its opening day on many countries’ box office charts. It earned US$5,001,705 in its opening weekend in the U.S., and eventually earned over US$10 million in the country. It ended its theatrical run in Japan in May 2023 after earning 14.79 billion yen (about US$105.3 million) at the box office. Box Office Mojo lists the film with a current worldwide gross of US$221,184,739. Crunchyroll is currently streaming the film.

Riddle Kamimura Ends Mikiri Kara Hajimeru Garyū Kenjutsu Manga – News

Manga adaptation of Hisumi‘s story launched in June 2023

Riddle Kamimura released the 26th and final chapter of the manga adaptation of Hisumi‘s Mikiri Kara Hajimeru Garyū Kenjutsu (Self-Taught Swordsmanship That Begins With Giving Up) light novel series last Friday.

The fantasy story centers on Rio, who lives in a border town. To protect himself, he signs up for swordsmanship lessons in the town’s training grounds, but quickly loses hope in the tutelage there. But in a border town that is always close to danger, he decides he still needs to learn something, and resolves to teach himself the sword.

Kamimura launched the manga in Mag Garden‘s Mag Comi website in June 2023. Mag Garden released the manga’s fourth compiled book volume in October 2025.

Kamimura launched the Ex-Yakuza and Stray Kitten (Hiroware Koneko to Moto Yakuza) manga in Mag Garden‘s MAGxiv on pixiv in August 2020, and ended it in September 2022. Mag Garden released the manga’s fourth volume in September 2022. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the manga and released the fourth volume in December 2023.

Hisumi serialized the original story in the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website from 2021 to 2022. Kadokawa published the first print novel volume in April 2022, with illustrations by Nemusuke. The second volume shipped in January 2023.

Hisumi serialized the A Serious Error in Chihaya-chan’s Reputation (Chihaya-chan no Hyōban ni Shinkoku na Error) story in the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website from 2022 to 2023. Kadokawa released the first print volume in August 2024, with illustrations by Doyou. Kadokawaw released the fifth novel volume on June 10. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the novels, and will release the first volume in January 2027 under its Airship imprint.

Webtoon-Based Live-Action Series Mousetrap Premieres on Netflix on August 28 – News

Series follows reclusive novelist Moon-jae, whose life is turned upside down by “Field Mouse”



Netflix will premiere its new mystery thriller series Mousetrap, based on the webtoon Field Mouse, on August 28. The company also unveiled the poster and English-subtitled teaser trailer:

The series follows reclusive novelist Moon-jae, whose life is turned upside down by a mysterious figure known only as “Field Mouse.” In a desperate attempt to reclaim what he’s lost, Moon-jae teams up with No-ja, a ruthless loan shark who once pursued him.

Hong-sun Kim directs the series, with Jun-yeol Ryu starring as Moon-jae, Kyung-gu Sul as loan shark Noja, and Kyoo-hyung Lee as detective Sun-yong.

Field Mouse was originally serialized from 2017-2020 by webtoon artist Ludovico. Its story is inspired by the Korean folktale “The Rate That Ate Fingernails,” which tells the story of a rat that transforms into a human after consuming someone’s fingernails.

An English version of the webtoon is not currently available.
