Viral Hand-Drawn Spider-Man: Brand New Day Poster Artist Speaks

Published

on

The promotional materials for Spider-Man: Brand New Day look a bit different in one theater in Canada, and the internet is loving it.

A Famous Players theater in Prince George, British Columbia almost certainly has the most unique movie poster for the record-breaking film led by Tom Holland. It features a hand-drawn illustration by employee Drake Landon that was inspired by the Spooder-Man meme, with the title of the movie written in font strikingly similar to the script in the official promotional materials.

The movie theater did not receive the official movie poster in time for its release, which led to Landon creating an original drawing to be put in its place in the cinema. That was explained in his now-viral illustration, as a note on the poster reads, “Sorry! We never recieved the real posters! Sorry for any inconviniences!” (Yes, with those exact spelling errors and all, adding to the amusement surrounding the sketch.)

Pictures of the poster have gained widespread attention online, with one Reddit post receiving upwards of 51,000 upvotes. Landon tells The Hollywood Reporter the reaction to his Spider-Man poster has been “very unexpected,” and he’s “kinda still not realizing how big it is.”

Landon adds, “It’s crazy that my art has gone that far for something so simple.” He also confirms that “the inspiration for it was the ‘Spooder-man’ meme that was popular around in the 2010s.”

Michelle Saba, vp of communications for Cineplex, owner of Famous Players, also commended the poster in a statement shared with THR. “Our team did have a little fun as they awaited the arrival of their Spider-Man: Brand New Day poster,” she said.

It’s no secret that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been a smash hit — at the box office, and with viewers. The film triumphed over many records originally set by Avengers: Endgame, including by earning the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history and becoming the fastest title to reach $500 million domestic. Brand New Day hit that milestone in its first seven days; Endgame hit the threshold in eight days.

The movie also earned the best-ever domestic box office sums for a Monday and a Tuesday; is the second-fastest film to achieve $1 billion globally; and scored the third-best second weekend ever at the box office. Spider-Man related content is hotter than ever, and Famous Players’ viral hand-drawn poster for the film is another piece of media that has proved just that.

A Facebook post made by a moviegoer who attended the Canadian theater also shared a photo of the artist, Landon, posing by his now-viral masterpiece. “My son Rogan and I stopped to appreciate this hand drawn movie poster at the theatre today and thought it was awesome. Then we got a chance to meet the artist, Drake. So my son decided to take a picture of the artist with his art work and we thought we should share it for everyone to check out,” wrote Adam Woodrow. “Keep it up Drake!”

Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob commended Gen Z for driving the recent success at the box office in a recent interview with THR. “The big change is Gen Z are coming back to the movies in a big way, and that’s making a difference,” he said. “They’re tired of looking at the small screen. They’re going out on a social basis and having a good time and that to me is very positive.”

Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek Memoir ‘Behind The Castle Walls’ Gets Fall Pub Date

Published

on

Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, has set a September 29 publication date for Behind The Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth by Bob Chapek, the former short-tenured CEO of Disney.

The memoir chronicles Chapek’s 30-year Disney tenure at the company and “the high-stakes maneuverings that unraveled behind the scenes” from his 2020 appointment as chief executive to his subsequent dismissal in 2022, the publisher revealed Wednesday. It will be the first time he’s publicly discussed the corporate drama.

Chapek recounts his early years, raised in small-town Indiana by his mother and WWII veteran father. After graduating college at Indiana University, he earned an MBA from Michigan State before landing jobs at J. Walter Thompson and the H.J. Heinz Company.

He began is career at Disney in 1993 as marketing director for Home Entertainment, going on to key roles including president of Consumer Products, and chairman of Parks, Experiences and Products. In February 2020, he was named CEO when Bob Iger abruptly stepped down just as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, shuttering theme parks, theaters and cruise ships.

“The stakes were high, the decisions unforgiving, and the backlash often inordinate, leaving him to wonder whether he had become the scapegoat in it all. In 2022, Chapek was out; his former boss was back in,” the publisher’s blurb says.

“Four years later, after reflection and distance, Chapek is going behind the scenes of one of the world’s most recognizable–and reticent–companies on earth. BEHIND THE CASTLE WALLS is a revealing and thrilling story of ambition, power, and the price of Disney magic.”

Chapek was little known outside of Disney and it was a surprise when Iger handpicked the exec to take the reins. He was pilloried on several fronts including management decisions that alienated key executives and a public fight with star Scarlett Johansson around the release of Black Widow. His response to legislation (dubbed the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill) in Florida angered both company employees and Gov. Ron DeSantis.

His rubber stamp by the Disney board was used as ammunition by activist investor Nelson Peltz in a proxy fight against the Mouse House.

However, it’s no secret that Chapek’s tenure was complicated by an unusual arrangement that saw Iger stay on as executive chairman, retaining control over creative endeavors at the company and leaving Chapek feeling undermined from the start. Now he tells his side.

Trump Sued Over Sale Of Faster Access To Truth Social Posts

Published

on

Two media groups filed suit against Donald Trump over a new offering in which subscribers can pay up to $100,000 a month for quicker access to his announcements on Truth Social.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court on Wednesday, the Freedom of the Press Foundation and The Intercept Media claim that the “scheme is profoundly corrupt.”

“The President stands to gain financially by giving ‘market-moving’ government information to those who are willing and able to pay his personal company,” the lawsuit stated.

They also contend that the service violates the First Amendment, noting that it “guarantees equal access to the President’s public announcements, and even content-neutral burdens on that access must be narrowly tailored to serve a significant government interest. There is no legitimate interest, let alone a significant one, in permitting President Trump to profit from selling government information.”

The lawsuit also claims violation of the Fifth Amendment, arguing that it prohibits “charging unreasonable sums that cannot be justified to offset the cost of the government benefit.”

The service is called Trump API, billed as offering the fastest access to the highest ranking accounts on Truth Social, potentially giving an advantage to traders for the market-moving information. It was pitched as a business-to-business offering for institutional customers.

The Intercept argued that the service forces it to make an “unconstitutional choice: either subsidize and associate with the President’s private company, harming The Intercept’s finances, reputation, and legal security, or risk losing out on timely news to competing organizations, similarly harming its reputation and revenue.”

The lawsuit seeks an injunction to halt the posting of exclusive government information on Truth Social, as well as a declaration that it is unconstitutional.

Also named as defendants in the lawsuit are two of the president’s top aides, Natalie Harp and Dan Scavino.

A White House spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

Trump Media and Technology Group, which owns Truth Social, has viewed Truth API as a long term recurring revenue stream. TMTG this week reported a $238 million net loss in the most recent quarter, on revenue of $1.7 million. The company did not immediately return a request for comment.

Marque Richardson & Morgan Lindholm To Recur On ‘Marshalls’ Season 2

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: The CBS series Marshals will welcome Marque Richardson (Unprisoned, Dear White People) to its Season 2 cast. Richardson will recur as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns.

Additionally, Morgan Lindholm will return to expand on her role as Maddie, the bartender at the local watering hole, ‘Bullet ’N Barrel,’ and Cal’s (Logan Marshall-Green) estranged daughter.

Production on Season 2 began in Park City, Utah, in June, with the confirmed return of lead Luke Grimes, Tatanka Means as Miles, and Ash Santos as Andrea. The show will return with new episodes this fall.

Produced by Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, Marshals is centered on Kayce Dutton (Grimes). With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates – Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Santos) and Miles Kittle (Means) – must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation.

As Deadline previously reported, the Season 1 finale ended on a pretty major cliffhanger with two of Kayce Dutton’s fellow Marshals – Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Pete “Cal” Calvin and Deputy U.S. Marshal Isabel “Belle” Skinner-Turek– in imminent danger after being led to a house where they encounter two men with big guns shooting at them.

It was also teased that Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrea Cruz could leave Montana. However, a second photo from production below reveals Santos, who plays Andrea, will be back, at least for the premiere episode “All Hat No Cattle.” She is posing alongside Means, a third confirmed cast member returning for Season 2. Outside of Grimes, Santos, and Means, due to the cliffhanger ending, there is no confirmation regarding which other members of the main cast will also be back.

Season 2 could also potentially explore Dutton’s love life further, following the loss of his wife somewhere between the end of Yellowstone and the start of Marshals. There was a moment in Episode 9 where he and Andrea seemed to be getting close. There was also a time he held hands with Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson) after the accident involving Garrett, played by country star Riley Green. The end of the Season 1 finale also sets up a potential love interest between Dutton and blonde transplant Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson).

Season 1 averaged 20.4 million multiplatform viewers for the first eight episodes, according to Nielsen.

Marshals is executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, David Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, showrunner Spencer Hudnut, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Freidman, Luke Grimes, and Keith Cox.

Lindholm is represented by Ellis Talent Group and Vault Entertainment. Richardson is represented by Vault Entertainment and Felker McGinnis & Ryan.
