Leeds United are hopeful of completing a transfer for centre-back Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The 29-year-old’s contract with the Bundesliga outfit, where he played under Daniel Farke in 2022-23, expires next summer.
Sources at Leeds and Gladbach, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, have each indicated confidence this Elvedi switch is likely to happen.
The development, first reported by Sky Sport Germany, has emerged in the week Sebastiaan Bornauw’s Leeds future has come into question. Hamburg are confident of signing the Belgian centre-back, who wants to play more than he has done at Elland Road, while United have acknowledged he could depart.
Elvedi, who is 6ft 2in and right-footed, plays in the same position as Bornauw. Leeds, who have been starting three centre-backs since last winter, would need extra cover in that department if Bornauw departed.
The Switzerland international, who played a central role for his country at this summer’s World Cup, has made 318 appearances in the Bundesliga across 10 seasons with Gladbach since his debut in 2015-16. He turns 30 in September and would be the oldest outfield player in the Leeds dressing room if he arrived.
To date, Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic and James Trafford are the three additions United have made this summer.
