Sunderland agree £25.6m transfer fee for left-back Dayann Methalie

Published

on

Sunderland have agreed a £25.6m fee to sign left-back Dayann Methalie from Toulouse.

The 20-year-old French defender is expected to undergo a medical after a verbal agreement was reached for an initial £23.9m, with a further £1.7m in potential add-ons.

Methalie made 28 appearances for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season, scoring twice in his final three games, as they finished ninth.

The deal follows a prolonged pursuit by Regis Le Bris’ side as Sunderland look to strengthen their defence before the start of their Premier League campaign at Ipswich Town next Saturday (15:00 BST).

The Black Cats will also compete in Europe for the first time in 53 years and are looking to add greater depth to their squad.

Belgium right-back Thomas Meunier, who signed on a free transfer from Lille, remains the only completed transfer so far in the window for Sunderland.

Vikings’ Jamal Adams carted off field after injury in preseason game vs. Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Vikings veteran safety Jamal Adams exited Saturday’s preseason game with an undisclosed injury. Following a lengthy trip to the medical tent, he was transported off the field on a cart.

Adams stumbled while defending receiver Calvin Austin III in the second quarter. He had drifted backward from the line of scrimmage and into coverage. When Austin crossed from the right side of the field to the left, Adams slipped and stayed on the turf for an extensive period.

Vikings teammates and coaches consoled Adams on the sideline before he left the field. Safety Josh Metellus and cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., specifically, appeared distraught after the injury. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell even visited Adams.

The 30-year-old former All-Pro signed with the Vikings before training camp began. He told reporters he chose the team because of his previous relationship with general manager Nolan Teasley and his respect for defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Quickly, he developed relationships with Metellus and Murphy. His versatility intrigued coaches.

Adams played 11 snaps before Saturday’s injury. He lined up near the line of scrimmage and in the slot, showcasing a potentially creative role. His previous injury history, which includes a torn quad in 2022, clouds his future. It also adds further urgency for Minnesota to find safety depth.

This story will be updated.

Charles Oakley’s lawsuit against Madison Square Garden dismissed — again

Published

on

A federal judge dismissed Charles Oakley’s lawsuit against Madison Square Garden on Friday, saying that the former New York Knicks forward did not prove he was assaulted when he was removed from a game as a fan in 2017.

Oakley was handcuffed and arrested after an altercation with security while sitting near owner James Dolan during a Knicks game against the LA Clippers on Feb. 8, 2017. Oakley filed several claims against MSG, which were dismissed in February 2020. However, after an appeal, Oakley’s assault-and-battery claim remained.

In Circuit Judge Richard J. Sullivan’s opinion and order released Friday, he stated, “Ample evidence — including videos from multiple angles and the unanimous testimony of every witness (even, to some extent, Oakley himself) — shows that Oakley had a reasonable opportunity to depart the Garden, that he instead resorted to physical violence, and that he was never pushed to the ground.”

He added: “In short, no rational jury could conclude that Oakley reasonably feared himself at risk of wrongful physical contact — let alone that MSG intended to stir such an apprehension.”

In its arguments, MSG used video evidence and previous testimony that Oakley was not assaulted.

“For more than nine years, Mr. Oakley’s lawyers have pursued claims they knew were false,” MSG said in a statement. “Those claims have now been dismissed by the Court in their entirety — for a third time. We are pursuing legal action against Douglas Wigdor, and his unscrupulous law firm, to hold them accountable for years of frivolous litigation and their blatant abuse of the judicial system.”

The Athletic reached out to Wigdor, Oakley’s attorney, for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.

In a statement to The Associated Press on Friday, Wigdor stated, “We are disappointed with the Court’s rulings. We believe there are conflicting accounts and only a jury can decide what exactly happened. We are hopeful that the Second Circuit will agree for a third time and remand the case for an immediate jury trial.”

Oakley, a fan favorite, spent 10 seasons with the Knicks and was a significant part of the team’s success in the 1990s. He has been absent from MSG during the Knicks’ recent postseason success, which culminated in this year’s NBA championship.

Oakley also played for the Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets.
