Olly Sanderson bundled home in stoppage time to snatch Stevenage a point in a 1-1 draw against Burton.

The former Fulham youngster came off the bench to cancel out Jack Armer’s second-half strike for the Brewers in a game of few clear-cut chances.

Albion started brightly against last season’s play-off semi-finalists, with Charlie Webster having the first opportunity in the 13th minute, turning smartly and firing a rising drive narrowly over the crossbar.

Stevenage full-back Luther James-Wildin saw a good chance go wide as Stevenage eventually began to threaten, despite Burton having the lion’s share of the chances.

Skipper Curtis Tilt headed a difficult chance wide before Albion worked Webster through one-on-one with Filip Marschall but the goalkeeper was equal to the shot.

Burton had a glorious chance to hit the front straight after half-time. Marschall shovelled Kyran Lofthouse’s cross out into the danger area, with Matty Dennis unable to steer the loose ball on target.

Armer finally provided a reward for Albion’s persistence when Lofthouse’s cross eventually found him at the back post to fire into the far corner with 15 minutes remaining.

But Sanderson had the final say on his Stevenage debut, poking home after fellow substitute Josh Magennis had unsettled the Burton defence.

Josh March headed the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time as 10-man Crewe got the better of nine-man Crawley at the Broadfield Stadium.

March settled the issue dramatically by heading in an assist by Joel Tabiner at the far post, Crawley having gone down to nine men 25 minutes from time.

Crawley’s former Arsenal and Sunderland keeper, Vito Mannone, twice required treatment in the opening 18 minutes after heavy collisions as Crewe edged the opening exchanges.

Crewe keeper Tom Booth, standing in for the injured Ian Lawlor, dived to save a low shot from Louis Watson before the break.

Crawley were hit by a sending off six minutes after the break when Kellan Gordon received a straight red card for violent conduct in an off-the-ball incident involving midfielder Joe White.

The Red Devils then went down to nine men after 65 minutes when Malcolm Ebiowei also saw red on his Crawley league debut for throwing the ball at Calum Agius.

Referee Andrew Humphries also gave Crewe captain Mickey Demetrou his marching orders late on for a second bookable offence in a game which had a total of 18 minutes of added time.

Veteran striker Ched Evans scored the only goal of the game, finding the net against one of his former clubs to give Fleetwood Town an opening day 1-0 victory at Chesterfield.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Chesterfield, who were also beaten by Fleetwood in the Carabao Cup last week.

Evans shot narrowly wide from close range and Will Davies saw his effort beaten away by keeper Ryan Boot before the goal, which came in the 35th minute. It was a superb strike, with Evans sending an audacious lob over Boot from around 30 yards out.

Lee Bonis went closest to scoring for the home side before the break, first putting a low shot wide and then heading off target from a great position.

Lewis McCann threatened to add a second goal, forcing a save from Boot after running at the defence.

At the other end, Jay Lynch protected Fleetwood’s lead, getting down smartly to save from Fraser Bryden.

Chesterfield enjoyed plenty of possession but failed to force an equaliser as the visitors defended resolutely.
