Hulu Buys ‘The Promise: Finding My Mother’s Killer’ & ‘Invisible Boys’
EXCLUSIVE: Hulu is on the hunt for a killer in its latest true-crime series.
The Disney streamer has become the first buyer to board true-crime doc The Promise: Finding My Mother’s Killer from Banijay Rights and also acquired Australian LQBT drama series Invisible Boys from the London-based distributor.
The Promise comes from Workerbee, which is part of Banijay Entertainment’s Banijay UK, along with Advance Originals and Circle M+P. The series was financed by Banijay and other investors, we hear, before it was taken to market.
The three-part show centres around the decades-long quest of Iranian-American Pooneh Entezari, who spent more than 30 years pursuing her mother’s killer. Ultimately, she spent millions of her self-made fortune funding an investigation into the person who committed the killing and also sought to clear her father’s name after he was convicted of the crime.
Effie Entezari was murdered in an execution style outside the apartment where she lived in Vancouver in 1989 and her husband, Mike Entezari, was later convicted of the murder. He died in prison in 2019, but Pooneh’s investigation ultimately led a civil trial to conclude another man, Viktor Pell, was to blame. Douglas Perry from The Oregonian/Oregon Live first told the story last year.
“This is an extraordinary and deeply moving story of one woman’s unwavering determination to bring her mother’s killer to justice,” said Workerbee MD Michelle Chappell. “We had the privilege of following Pooneh’s journey over many years, never knowing where her search for the truth would lead. Her courage and persistence uncovered compelling evidence, revealing a story that is both a gripping investigation and a haunting portrait of an American dream that descended into tragedy.”
‘Invisible Boys’
Banijay Rights’ deal with Hulu also includes Stan original drama Invisible Boys, the coming-of-age series about a group of gay teens in the remote coastal town of Geraldton, Western Australia, after one is outed on social media.
Starring the likes of Joseph Zara , Aydan Calafiore, Zach Blampied, Joe Kloce, Pia Miranda and David Lyons, the show launched in Australia last year. It won Best Original Web Series at the IFFA Awards and was nominated for Peabody and AACTA Awards.
Nicholas Verso is the creator and director, and he produced alongside Tania Chambers. Feisty Dame Production and Asphodel Films made the series for Stan, in association with Stan. Screenwest, Lotterywest and the WA Regional Screen Fund provided funding, and aided development.
“Queer storytelling is having a moment, and it has never felt more important,” said Verso. “I’m thrilled that our horny, sweaty Australian contribution is coming to U.S. audiences. I can’t wait for viewers to fall in love with these messy boys and their journey towards strength, pride and compassion.”
For Banijay Rights, the deal is one of the most significant since we revealed it was merging with All3Media International (All3MI), the sales arm of All3Media.
Following the merger of Banijay Entertainment and RedBird IMI’s All3 assets, All3MI was subsumed into Banijay Rights, though the All3 business has continued to announce deals ahead of MIPCOM Cannes in October. All3MI boss Louise Pedersen left, with Banijay Rights CEO Cathy Payne running the enlarged business.
Lauren Farrar, SVP U.S. Sales, Banijay Rights, said today: “Invisible Boys and The Promise: Finding My Mother’s Killer are two very different stories, but are both built around the same thing we look for in every title we take to market: Bold storytelling that makes a lasting and powerful impression on audiences. We’re delighted to be bringing both to Hulu and to U.S. viewers.”
Both titles will have their U.S. premiere on Hulu and through the Hulu on Disney+ bundle, with launch dates to be announced.

Oscars 2027: Czech Republic Submits Doc ‘If Pigeons Turned to Gold’
Pepa Ljubojacki’s intimate documentary If Pigeons Turned to Gold is the Czech Republic’s submission for the best international feature film category at the Oscars 2027.
The Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) unveiled the Czech candidate for the international Oscar on Wednesday. “In the intimate and formally original documentary feature, the director followed for five years the fortunes of her brother and two cousins whose addictions were slowly destroying their relationships, homes and their feeling of safety,” the academy said. “Using DIY aesthetics, the director interlinks diary shots, stylized memories, live photos as well as graphic collages and, without any sentiment, tries to understand the reasons for their fall and also the impact of it on the whole family.”
The film had its world premiere in February at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the award for the best documentary feature, as well as the independent Caligari prize. The film will debut in Czech cinemas at the end of September. Croatia-based Split Screen is handling international sales.
The international Oscar shortlist of 15 movies will be published on Dec. 15, with the five nominees unveiled on Jan. 21.
Last year, the Czech submission for the international Oscar race was I’m Not Everything I Want to Be by Klára Tasovská.
So far, two Czechoslovak films and one Czech film managed to win the iconic Oscar statuette for what is now the international feature film honor, previously known as the best foreign-language film award. The Shop on Main Street (1965) by Ján Kádár and Elmar Klos was one winner, followed two years later by Closely Watched Trains by Jiří Menzel and then Kolya (1996) by Jan Svěrák.

‘Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan Shuts Door On Previously Announced ‘6666’ Spinoff: “I Would Never Do That”
Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan has limits on what spinoffs he will do and has shut the door on a fictionalized version based on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.
In a new interview, Sheridan said that the previously announced 6666 spinoff was not happening.
“There’s never going to be one,” he said on the Rodeo Time podcast. “I would never fictionalize that ranch.”
He continued, “People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that.”
Yellowstone fans believed that a spinoff set in the real-life ranch was happening after Jefferson White’s character, Jimmy Hurdstrom, was sent to the 6666 Ranch in Season 4.
“I’ve actually got on my computer all the scenes of Jimmy at the 6666 pulled out and strung together, and it makes its own perfect little movie,” Sheridan said. “You watch him go there as this misfit, and leave as a man and a respected cowboy.”
Sheridan, along with a group of investors, purchased the ranch in 2020 and would not want to “trivialize” the working ranch by “making up lives” and “invent drama.”
“So now I’m trivializing and fictionalizing something where real people work, and they raise their families there, and I could never do that to them,” he added. “I could never do that to the cowboys that dedicated themselves, and everybody that works on that ranch. I’m very protective of the Sixes, and it’s a big responsibility to be the person who has to protect that ranch, so I have to be very, very careful with it.”
In 2022, Paramount announced at its Upfront presentation that it was developing the Yellowstone spinoff, 6666.
The series was set when Comanches still ruled West Texas, and no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing. The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world-class cowboys are born and made.
Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, Ron Burkle, and Bob Yari were signed up as executive producers, with 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios producing.
Although the 6666 spinoff did not materialize, Yellowstone has plenty of other stories in its universe. In 2021, 1883 premiered, followed by 1923 in 2022. Marshals premiered earlier this year, and Texas-set Dutton Ranch followed soon after.

Ariana Madix Teases “Unseen Footage” At ‘Love Island USA’ Season 8 Reunion
Ariana Madix is teasing the upcoming Love Island USA Season 8 reunion and revealing that there will be an unseen footage show.
The special was filmed on August 10 and is set to stream on Peacock on Monday, August 31 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, but the dating series host gave insight into what viewers can expect.
“Everybody came there ready to say exactly how they feel, and if they had a chip on their shoulder or something they wanted to bring up, they were ready to come and talk about it,” the Emmy-nominated host told Entertainment Weekly.
She continued, “And, of course, in talking about it, depending on who you’re talking about or the situation, it went many different directions, but I think that it was the perfect conclusion to the season.”
Madix noted that viewers will get a “lot of unseen footage,” which “cleared a lot of things,” for the Islanders as well, adding, “That was really interesting for me because I only got to see it for [the first time] as well.”
Madix will be joined by Andy Cohen as they both co-host the Love Island USA Season 8 reunion.
The special will reunite the Islanders after leaving the villa, crowning Trinity Tatum and Bryce Alakai as the winning couple. Other fellow Islanders set to make an appearance include Aniya Harvey, Melanie Moreno, Kayda Bosse, Dylan Wrona, Kenzie Annis, Corbin Mims, Caleb McDaniel, Tierra “Titi” Davis and KC Chandler. The first dumped Islander, Sean Reifel, was also at the reunion, as well as early favorites Beatriz Hatz and Sol Dean.
