Teenager Josh Ayala scored twice on his full professional debut as West Ham came from behind to thrash Championship rivals Southampton 4-1 in the Carabao Cup.

Nuno Espirito Santo made it clear a cup run was not his priority by fielding a team made up of four teenagers and three 20-year-olds among eight changes from Saturday’s home defeat by Charlton.

Southampton took just 10 minutes to open the scoring. Tom Fellows’ looping right-wing cross was cleared only to Leo Scienza on the edge of the penalty and he showed great composure to keep the ball under pressure before calmly slotting into the far bottom corner.

Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz then made an excellent one-handed save to keep out Joel Piroe’s close-range effort in the 21st minute.

West Ham equalised against the run of play four minutes before half-time when Peretz flapped at Lewis Orford’s corner and 19-year-old Ayala headed home.

The Hammers took the lead eight minutes into the second half when Ayala cashed in on Jack Stephens’ poor defending to fire past Peretz from eight yards.

Taty Castellanos swept in Joel Veltman’s low cross 15 minutes from time before Jarrod Bowen grabbed an 84th minute fourth to condemn Southampton to a first home defeat since January 17.

“It was a very good first half and a very poor second from us.

“We had chances to go 2-0 up, conceded from a corner and from there we never found a way back into the game.

“There were some positives but as a team we need to grow and become better in a lot of different aspects.”

Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush is set to undergo a medical at Tottenham Hotspur after the two sides agreed a loan deal for the forward that includes an obligation to buy.

The obligation will be worth a guaranteed £50million with £10m due in add-ons, £5m of which are guaranteed. The Egypt international is set to sign a four-year contract in north London with the option of an additional season. There is no sell-on fee due to Marmoush’s former side Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Spurs were working on a double deal for Marmoush and his City team-mate Savio. Tottenham have since signed Savio in an £85m package, who was the subject of talks between the clubs last summer.

The move for Marmoush is a new pursuit, with The Athletic previously reporting that the Egypt international could leave the Etihad Stadium this summer, despite only joining City in January 2025.

Marmoush scored eight goals in 36 appearances across all competitions last season, though only made eight starts in the Premier League, featuring a further 13 times off the bench. He was part of the squad for the 3-0 Community Shield defeat against Arsenal on August 16, coming on as a substitute for Erling Haaland in the second half.

The 27-year-old signed for City in January last year in a deal worth in the region of €70m (£59m) to €75m (£63m) from Frankfurt, after an impressive start to the 2024-25 season in which he scored 20 goals in 26 appearances for the German side.

Marmoush made an impact after his arrival, scoring seven times in 16 games, but fell down the pecking order last season as his minutes were reduced.

The proposed move to north London would be the latest deal in what has been a busy summer for Spurs, who have already spent in excess of £300m on Savio, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have also arrived as free agents.

It has been a long wait for Tottenham fans in recent weeks, holding on for the club to complete their summer business with the addition of new attacking players.

The way Spurs have handled this summer, starting with the defence, then moving onto the midfield, left a strange situation where the front line was clearly the weakest part of the team. Especially given how many of their attackers are still out injured.

That has finally started to change. Savio’s arrival and Marmoush’s impending move from City mean that Tottenham are now set to have the big-name forwards to go with the improvements they have made elsewhere in the team. And those two signings fit neatly alongside the other additions from this summer, particularly given they are already established in the Premier League.

Savio has two seasons at City behind him, and while last year was quiet for the 22-year-old Brazilian, he knows the league and will not need an adjustment period. He was one of the most exciting young talents in Europe when City signed him two years ago, and will offer speed and directness that Spurs have lacked.

Marmoush has been at City for 18 months and was never the first-choice No 9 simply because of Haaland. But he has shown that he has energy, mobility and an eye for goal. This has been a problem position for Tottenham for some time, given the struggles for consistency and fitness for Richarlison and Dominic Solanke. Marmoush will immediately elevate the team. Which is exactly what De Zerbi was hoping for.

Raheem Sterling will appear in court next month to face charges of dangerous driving and possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation after crashing his car into motorway barriers in May.

The former England winger, who most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, crashed his Lamborghini into barriers on the M3 in Hampshire on the morning of Thursday, 28 May.

The 31-year-old was arrested and then released on bail pending further enquiries.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman said: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.

“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.

“The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange [Hampshire], on 28 May, 2026.

“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on 15 September.”

Police suspected Sterling of “driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs,” but that has not been included in the charges.

In May a source close to Sterling told BBC Sport there was “no proof” of drugs in his system.

The source added the player had faced “an extremely tough couple of years” and had been made to “feel worthless” and “forgotten about”.

Sterling has been without a club since leaving Dutch side Feyenoord at the end of last season.

He joined Feyenoord in February on a short-term contract after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent.

Chelsea paid £47.5m to sign Sterling from Manchester City in 2022, where he had won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup in seven years.

In 2024 the former Liverpool winger joined Arsenal on loan, but upon returning to Chelsea in 2025 was exiled from the first-team squad and made to train separately.

Sterling earned 82 England caps between 2012 and 2022, and appeared at three World Cups and two European Championships.
