Carlos Queiroz has been reappointed Ghana head coach less than two months after stepping down from the role.
The 73-year-old said in July he was “leaving this journey” after less than three months in charge and guiding Ghana to the last-32 stage of the World Cup, where the nation was eliminated 1-0 by Colombia.
On Thursday, however, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed Queiroz “would embark on a new coaching mandate” which would commence in this month’s international window.
“The GFA believes Queiroz’s extensive international experience, technical expertise and knowledge of the Black Stars position him strongly to lead the team into this next chapter,” the statement added.
Queiroz had been appointed in April to oversee the tournament after his predecessor Otto Addo had been sacked.
Previously, the former Real Madrid head coach had managed Iran at each of the last three World Cup finals, having taken Portugal to the last-16 stage of the 2010 edition.
Ghana won their opening group-stage game 1-0 against Panama thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi, followed by a goalless draw against England and then a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
Queiroz’s highest profile job was as Real Madrid head coach in 2003-04, between two stints as assistant coach at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, when the club won three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.
Ghana was his ninth international side to coach, having also coached South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, and, more recently, Qatar and Oman, whom he left in March.
