Raheem Sterling faces possible prison time after admitting to dangerous driving, nitrous oxide possession
Former England international Raheem Sterling faces a possible prison sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide.
Sterling, 31, was behind the wheel of a Lamborghini, inhaling the class C drug from balloons and driving in an “absolutely horrendous” manner, when he careered off a busy road in Hampshire during the morning rush-hour on May 28 this year.
Sterling admitted to the police that “he had a problem” with nitrous oxide after being arrested for the drug-driving crash, a court was told.
The former Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool player — a free agent since leaving Dutch club Feyenoord at the end of last season — will be sentenced at a later hearing after pleading guilty on Tuesday to a series of criminal charges.
In an 80-minute hearing at Basingstoke Magistrates’ court, footage was shown of Sterling being handcuffed and arrested at the crash site after “multiple reports” from worried motorists, including one who raised “genuine concerns that (Sterling) was going to kill someone”.

Sterling was found in the passenger’s seat, with two canisters of nitrous oxide on his lap. There were another four in the car, as well as a deflated balloon that he had been using to inhale the drug which was criminalised in 2023. In full view of the arresting officers, he could be seen trying to put them in the back seat.
“Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is stored in canisters,” prosecutor Simon Jones told the court. “It has the impact of slowing brain functions and bodily responses and can cause sensory distortion, including hallucinations … increasing the risk of collisions.”
Standing in the glass-panelled dock, Sterling admitted possessing six 670-gram canisters of nitrous oxide and a charge of dangerous driving, relating to what the prosecution described as a “category 1A offence” — the most serious level in sentencing guidelines — across two motorways, the M25 and M3, before veering off the A327 into a metal gate.
Sterling also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of failing to provide a specimen of breath, having been arrested just after 9am on the day of the crash. Other tests were carried out that showed “serious impairment” and Sterling was said to have told the officers that he had a problem with nitrous oxide.
District judge Kirsty Allman adjourned Sterling’s case to November 25 and told him it would be treated on an “all options” basis, meaning she could not rule out the possibility that it would end up with one of the most successful English footballers of his generation going to prison.
Sterling’s defence team will argue that his early guilty plea should count in his favour and that he could be made the subject of a suspended sentence, meaning he is spared prison unless he reoffends over a set period of time.
However, the prosecution’s case is that Sterling’s offending ticked seven out of ten boxes for aggravating features in relation to cases of dangerous driving. These include the prolonged length of time, the danger to other people and the persistent use of a prohibited drug.
The court was told that the first 999 call from the M25 was made at 7.45am by a motorist, Christopher Jennings, who followed Sterling for 30 minutes during a time of the morning when the motorway, on the outskirts of London, was so busy it was operating at a reduced 40mph speed limit. Sterling was seen inhaling from a balloon while “swerving within the lanes, weaving from the far left to the far right, and going so close to the white lines that other vehicles had to brake or move over to avoid a crash.”

Over the next 67 minutes, other 999 calls were made to alert three different police forces — the Metropolitan (London), Thames Valley and Surrey — that there was a driver out of control and openly inhaling from balloons.
One motorist, Fiona Jennings, rang the police at 8.45am on the M3 and described Sterling’s driving as “absolutely horrendous, recklessly undercutting and swerving in and out lanes”. She observed Sterling inhaling from a balloon. She described it as so big that she thought at first the airbag had been deployed.
With the balloon impairing Sterling’s view, other motorists had to hang back or take emergency action to avoid something more serious happening, the court was told. Some drivers put on their hazard signs to warn others as Sterling repeatedly went into the central reservation, causing stones and dust to fly into the air.
The final call to the police was made at 8.52am and shortly afterwards Sterling lost control of his car, crashing off the road and hitting the metal barriers with enough force to burst three of the tyres on his £270,000 car.

“Stop tensing up,” the officer tells him in the footage, handcuffing his hands behind his back.
“I’m not tensing up,” Sterling replies.
Other evidence made it clear that Sterling had also been driving “erratically” in the early hours of the morning. The first 999 call, the court was told, was actually made at 1.10am after he was seen entering the drive-through of the McDonald’s in Hayes, north London, “at excessive speed” and inhaling a balloon while apparently waiting for his food.
Jones, prosecuting, described it as “important context and background” because it showed that, seven hours before the first reports of dangerous driving, there was already “clear concern of impairment through consumption of an implicit drug”. Sterling admitted to the police that he had inhaled the drug at 11pm the previous night.

The winger was taken to Basingstoke police station, where he told the officers that “he had not slept all night and was tired and confused”. During a heatwave, with temperatures topping 30 degrees Celsius, he complained about feeling cold and seemed, to one police officer, “quiet, withdrawn and lethargic”, showing signs of being impaired. Sterling’s barrister, Jason Bartfeld KC, said his client was cold because of the air conditioning.
Sterling’s appearance in court comes during a difficult period in his professional life that has left him — a footballer who has twice appeared in the top 15 of the Ballon d’Or voting — without a club and no obvious future in the sport that has shaped his life.
Sterling’s 82 appearances for England took in three World Cups and a place in UEFA’s team of the tournament at the European Championship in 2021. He won four Premier League titles with Manchester City and, in his younger years at Liverpool, the Golden Boy award as the world’s best young player. Other awards and trophies have followed, including an MBE in the Queen’s 2021 birthday honours list for services to racial equality.
No details were supplied in court about what had led to Sterling taking nitrous oxide or whether there was a direct link to the deterioration of his career. There was no prolonged mitigation either. However, his legal team has supplied a file to the judge, including a number of references from Sterling’s former colleagues in football.
Sterling, who has no previous convictions, was issued with an interim driving ban and was told that the matter may yet be deemed so serious it is moved to Winchester Crown Court, which has higher sentencing powers.

Thomas Tuchel: England boss on World Cup reflections, wishing he’d eaten Azteca grass and an ‘exciting’ future | Football News
Thomas Tuchel wishes he’d eaten grass from the Azteca pitch after England’s World Cup win over Mexico this summer.
That’s just one of the statements from the England boss which has drawn attention across social media, following the FA releasing a new documentary called ‘Reflections: England’s World Cup Journey’.
In the documentary, Tuchel sits alongside former England international and Sky Sports pundit Daniel Sturridge to look back on England’s campaign, which ultimately saw the team finish third, having lost in the semi-finals to Argentina.
England’s standout performance of the tournament came in the last-16 win over Mexico in Mexico City, where they played for over 35 minutes with 10 men but prevailed 3-2.
“I texted a friend after the match and I just wrote, ‘I regret that I didn’t eat some grass after the match to keep something from this in my body forever’,” said Tuchel.
On the unity his players showed in that match, Tuchel pointed to their reaction to Jordan Henderson falling and breaking his arm in the post-match celebrations.
“If you needed any proof, any proof for what it meant to these players and how they were with each other, it was the moment when Jordan fell over and broke his arm,” said Tuchel.
“Within a second, the players were there, every single player was there, stopping the celebrations, building a shield, protecting Jordan and not going nowhere in full empathy. It was just so special.”
The film will be released on Wednesday September 16 exclusively on the England app.
The build-up to the Mexico game had been dominated by talk of the altitude of the Azteca stadium but also the potential for weather delays, which proved founded with kick-off pushed back.
But Tuchel says a calm came over the group when they trained together in Mexico before the match and meditation and manifestation helped them to achieve the victory.
“In the middle of Mexico City and we arrived and it’s an oasis, it’s so peaceful, it’s an unbelievable pitch and it is so calm, it is so peaceful that it did something to the players,” said Tuchel.
“They came out from the gym straight out on the pitch, they were having phone calls, walking around, it was such a peaceful energy.
“So we came up with this line of ‘silence is powerful’, that we enjoy the silence, we’re in a home country, we will play against the whole nation, the whole nation will be against us, the stadium, it’s almost impossible to win in the stadium, no one has ever done it before in a World Cup match.
“So let’s enjoy the silence, the power of the silence. We even had five minutes on the match day of meditation and manifestation of the last whistle.”
The FA are currently undergoing a review of England’s World Cup campaign but Tuchel says the experience has bonded him and the group together and he is “excited” about what comes next.
England face world champions Spain in the Nations League in the upcoming international break with the 2028 Euros the next major tournament. Tuchel reckons preparing for that tournament will be easier than the planning which was required for the 2026 World Cup.
“It created a huge bond to these players, it feels like they are my players now. This is the beauty of it,” said Tuchel.
“When you have a manager and then you have success and you have painful moments together, but you have so much time together and then you create a natural bond.
“I’m happy to see them, I’m happy to challenge them, happy to push them and very proud to be a part of them.
“I’m very excited. I’m excited to work with these players. I’m excited to have new, young players that we can bring into camp and that they can learn.
“We’ve got another step closer and I think we’re there.
“It’s very difficult to prepare a World Cup in the US, but it’s possible to prepare for a Euros and be prepared in Nations League tier one.
“The target is to have another 10 matches. We had 10 matches in the US, eight wins, one draw, one painful loss, but that is something to build on.
“We have all the right to hold our heads high and go with courage and positivity into the next challenges.
“We have four matches in the Nations League coming up and that’s where the focus is.”
Tuchel on Harry Kane going to another level
“Just so easy. He’s always there, he’s always in training, he always wants to train. The level to which he got himself now, since he’s at Bayern Munich.
“The level of commitment and training, how he arrived in prep camp, how he arrived in the qualification matches, the speech after the October camp, and he straight away stood up in the dressing room and said, ‘guys, we will keep on going in November, this is what we do’.
“He found another level in his game, but also as a personality, and how he shows up for training, how he drives training standards is one of a kind. The finishing is out of control good.”
On Jude Bellingham living up to his full potential
“He was one of the players of the tournament, not only for us, but of the whole tournament.
“He lived up to his full potential, you could just see what a competitor, what a machine he is, and he just thrives on the pressure. He just loves these moments, he loves these stages, it brings out the very best.
“He came with an amazing mindset into camp, with the best physical preparation. He came fresh, he came hungry, hungry for football, hungry for minutes into camp. He took his place and decided every single match for us.”
On the England fans and their ‘special’ connection with the team
“They lived up to the high expectations.
“Everyone told me, ‘wait until the tournament starts, we will have the best fans, we will be right on top, it will be amazing, the amount of people…’ and it was just like that from the first moment.
“They just felt this team. I believe that fans have a sense, maybe they cannot name it, someone will say, ‘yeah, they give everything, they’re sweating, after the whistle goes, they have to sit down because they’re so tired’. For everyone it’s maybe different, they feel it, they could sense it, that this team is together and this team means it.
“That’s what made the connection so strong. That was not artificial. That was very special.”

Tiger Woods: Golfer seen on range for the first time since March’s car crash
It remains unclear whether Woods is preparing for a comeback.
He has not played competitively since 2024 after rupturing an Achilles tendon in March 2025 and having back surgery last October.
After March’s road accident – his second arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence – Woods said he was “stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health”.
It was the latest in a string of incidents that have littered Woods’ recent years.
His marriage ended – as did lucrative sponsorship deals – after he struck a fire hydrant, a tree and several hedges outside his home in a 2009 incident, sparking accusations of extra-marital affairs.
In 2017, he was sentenced to a year’s probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving. That came after police officers found Woods slumped at the wheel of his car near his home.
In 2021, Woods survived a serious accident which left him with extensive injuries and he played only a limited schedule since then.

Reading 1 – 2 Brentford

Brentford emerged from a tense finish against Reading to book their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round with a 2-1 victory at Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Callum Wilson and Fabio Carvalho were on target in the first half as the Premier League club showed a clinical touch against League One opposition, who produced a number of chances but lacked the firepower to finish them off.
Paudie O’Connor eventually pulled one back to revive Reading’s challenge and Brentford could not rest easy in the remaining 18 minutes, although substitute Igor Thiago was among those who should have killed the match off.
It took just 136 seconds for Brentford to take the lead with Wilson finding the bottom left corner of the net after a slip in defence by O’Connor turned Dango Ouattara’s pass into an opportunity.
A cross by Carvalho caused problems in the visiting box and Reading then had the ball in the net but referee Tom Nield ruled out O’Connor’s bicycle kick for a high boot.
O’Connor was doing everything possible to make up for his earlier mistake as he headed a free-kick inches over the crossbar.
Reading had clearly recovered from the shock of going behind so early as they poured forward, with a double clearance by Michael Kayode saving Brentford before Jamie Reid went desperately close.
O’Connor slipped again as he fluffed a clearance, giving Wilson time to pick his spot only for keeper Joel Pereira to get his body in the way.
Brentford scrambled to keep out Reid as he closed in on goal and then Conor Masterson flashed narrowly wide, but the Premier League club then scored on the counter-attack.
In a cruel blow for the Royals, Ouattara took advantage of the space in defence to slide the ball to Carvalho who calmly directed the ball beyond Pereira.
Ellery Balcombe’s sharp reflexes prevented Josh Stokes from pulling one back for Reading but Brentford should have extended the lead only for Kayode to send a close-range effort wide.
Liam Fraser reminded the visitors they could not relax as he drilled a shot past the left post but the better chances were now coming at the other end, with Ouattara this time at fault for not making the most of a great opportunity.
Reading deserved a goal and it arrived in the 72nd minute when a corner was met by O’Connor’s header, with the Irish defender’s finish setting up a nervy finale.
On came Thiago but he was unable to improve the standard of finishing by his team, which had declined noticeably in the second half.
