After unexpectedly dropping the summer anthem with Season 2 of Adults, Rachel Marsh is looking back on her journey to onscreen pop icon.

The actress, who plays dental assistant Carly in the FX comedy series, explained that she and director Paul Briganti “tried all different versions” of her hit pop single “Hiccup”, which appeared in the episode “Pop Girlie”, now available to stream on Hulu.

“It’s interesting because this is [Carly’s] livestream, but I was supposed to take it super seriously. But also, the joke is that I’m bad at it,” she explained to A*Pop. “So, holding all three of those things in my hands was very confusing.”

Marsh continued, “So, in that sense, Paul our director, we just tried a bunch of shit and saw what was coming across as someone earnestly trying to do a good job, but also not doing a good job. So, it was a really fun, almost like an acting exercise to be like, ‘lemme just try to be stupid and see if that is coming across in a way that someone is trying really hard,’ or ‘lemme try to take this very seriously and see if that comes across in a way that’s very earnest.’ We tried all different versions of it.”

In the episode, while awaiting the results of her dental school exams, Carly decides to explore her inner dream to become a pop star, releasing her rusty—albeit catchy—single “Hiccup” with reluctant support from her boyfriend Samir (Malik Elassal).

Marsh can currently be seen in the romantic-comedy The Love Hypothesis, which is now available to stream on Prime Video.

Vee, born Vena Excell, is now also under new management. The comedian has signed with Alec Shankman’s HeartRock Partners, having previously been represented by Jacqueline Uram at 400 Ventures.

Vee first garnered recognition as a cast member of Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘n Out and The Women of Wild ‘n Out, beginning to accrue a social following now numbering over 6 million. In July 2024, she sold-out her first one-woman show, Sharoonnn Said It!, centered on her Jamaican character of the same name, which she performed at Center Stage Theater in Atlanta, GA.

Vee also starred in HBO Max’s Rap Sh!t and BET+’s Style Me For Christmas and will appear in the upcoming National Lampoon’s Hollywood Hustle film.

Shankman launched HeartRock earlier this year after leaving Gersh.

While the four-part Beatles biopic is underway, another British pop invasion could get the big-screen treatment next.

Big Boys creator Jack Rooke recently teased that he’s developing a “fun comedy drama” about the Spice Girls, having written a script with “a lovely little group of gals and gays” that he hopes to get into production.

“I don’t know how much I can say, but yes, I have been developing something that is, I would say, more than a music biopic,” he revealed on BBC Sounds’ Sidetracked. “It’s like a sort of fun comedy drama.”

Rooke added, “So, there has been a script written with me and a lovely little group of gals and gays. But that’s all I can say, and we don’t know what’s going on with it. Maybe one day, if people would like to watch that, that would be amazing.”

Explaining that the British girl group was the first time he saw “working class women be ambitious in British pop culture,” Rooke reasoned that a Spice Girls biopic would be just as culturally significant as Sam Mendes’ The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, which has been in production this summer.
