Open de France: England’s Matt Fitzpatrick takes five-shot lead into final day as Tommy Fleetwood withdraws with illness | Golf News

Matt Fitzpatrick moved a big step closer to a fourth worldwide win of the season after taking a five-shot lead into the final round of the FedEx Open de France.

The Englishman held a one-shot advantage heading into the weekend at Le Golf National but pulled further ahead with a six-under 65 on Saturday afternoon, mixing seven birdies with his first bogey of the week.

Fitzpatrick – already a winner on the PGA Tour at the Valspar Championship, RBC Heritage and Zurich Classic of New Orleans this year – moved to 19 under and with a commanding advantage over France’s Tom Vaillant.

Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra, third in the Race to Dubai standings behind Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy, charged into a share of third after carding an eagle and seven birdies in a round-of-the-week 62.

Ryder Cup hopeful Kristoffer Reitan, Brandon Stone, Angel Hidalgo and Jeff Winther are also in the group six behind, while England’s Tommy Fleetwood withdrew ahead of the third round due to illness.

How Fitzpatrick extended his lead in France

Fitzpatrick quickly grabbed control by birdieing the first and two-putting from 40 feet to take advantage of the par-five third, with the former US Open champion adding another birdie at the sixth.

He failed to get up and down to save par from off the par-three eighth green but responded by birdieing the par-five next, then added three more after the turn – including from tap-in range at the par-four 13th – to pull further clear.

More from Golf

“Just another really, really solid day,” Fitzpatrick said. “I felt really comfortable out there. It’s always nice to get off to a nice start like that and then you can kind of kick on from there.

“I felt like that my game was pretty solid all day. I feel like I’m in a position that if I go and shoot a good round tomorrow, then obviously it makes it almost impossible to catch. But a long way to go and just take it hole by hole.”

Vaillant will play alongside Fitzpatrick in the final group after carding five birdies and a bogey during a third-round 67, while Chacarra’s 62 included a 25-foot eagle at the ninth and five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the back nine.

“I’ve been playing unbelievable golf the first couple rounds,” Chacarra explained. “The putts didn’t want to go in and today we finally see some putts go in. So happy with a good moving day.”

Winther stumbled with a double-bogey at the par-five 14th in his third-round 70, dropping him back to 13 under, while first-round leader Michael Kim slipped a further shot back after finishing his day with a double-bogey at the par-four last.

English duo Sam Bairstow and Joe Dean carded matching 66s to head into the final day on 11 under, while Fleetwood was due to head into the weekend on six under before his withdrawal.

WXV Global Series: Lynn still positive despite Wales’ USA setback

Published

on

Head coach Sean Lynn says he is still seeing the positives despite Wales’ narrow WXV defeat to USA.

Wales had gone into the game full of confidence after their eight-try mauling of South Africa, but failed to produce a repeat performance in front of the Cardiff Arms Park faithful.

The first half was encouraging enough, with Wales clawing back a 14-point deficit, but hopes of a second-half resurgence were short-lived amid a string of individual errors that allowed The Eagles to emerge 26-24 winners.

But as Wales head into their week off ahead of next month’s double-header against Japan, Lynn said he has seen enough progress.

“I saw some grit, I saw some effort there,” he told BBC Sport.

“Before, when we were 21-7 down, I would have seen heads drop, but we’re in a good place and came back. Now it’s about us learning how to see games off and going back to the simple things we’re doing well.”

Baltimore Ravens vs Dallas Cowboys: Maracana pitch still being worked on ahead of NFL match on Sunday | NFL News

Published

on

Workers were still trimming the turf at Maracana Stadium on Saturday, less than 30 hours before the NFL’s first game in Rio de Janeiro between the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Ravens.

The Maracana’s pitch has been a concern for almost two weeks due to its poor shape amid a long season in Brazilian football, with Rio clubs Flamengo and Fluminense playing there at least once a week.

Maracana workers were using mows and scissors big and small to perfect the turf for the game, in an effort expected to end just hours before kick-off.

On Friday, the executive director of the NFL Players Association said both the NFL and the players union have had experts monitoring the field conditions for Sunday’s game. The union’s experts are worried about loose turf leading to too much slipping.

Concerns are about the turf’s traction and stability, which made the NFL reinforce its stitching. Earlier this week, field director Nick Pappas said he was confident players will have no trouble.

On Saturday, Pappas told reporters that the NFL made additional improvements since the union’s concerns were raised.

“Things check out,” Pappas said. “No need to worry.”

The NFL has been playing in Brazil since 2024, but the two previous games were at the 48,000-seat NeoQuimica Arena in Sao Paulo. In the first year of the Brazil game, its turf was also criticised and forced players of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers to change their cleats to stop slipping.

Cobie Durant required medical treatment after Markquese Bell landed on his team-mate during their team’s clash with the Washington Commanders.

The Maracana field is 100 per cent natural grass, while the NeoQuimica Arena has a mixture between natural and synthetic that players in Brazil deem to be the country’s best pitch.

The Cowboys and Ravens began their preparations in Rio on Friday following roughly 10-hour flights. Dak Prescott, his Cowboys teammates and their cheerleaders had their visit to the stadium in the morning.

Fans from Texas involved in a stadium tour were more worried about going to a Brazilian steakhouse for lunch than the turf conditions for Sunday’s game.

Jason Bell and Phoebe Schecter breakdown the Baltimore Ravens’ win over the Indianapolis Colts.

“These boys have played in very bad conditions growing up, I am sure they will handle whatever challenges come,” said George Smith, 72, wearing a cap with the Cowboys’ blue star and a Brazilian national team football shirt. “What concerns me now is making sure I get my beef today rather than tomorrow before the game.”

Throughout Rio’s glitzy southern end, where Copacabana beach lies, there were clearly more Cowboys than Ravens fans roaming around. Many fans were still arriving from other South American nations, as Brazil is for now the only country of the region to host NFL games.

Their game Sunday will be one of a record nine international contests on the NFL schedule this season.
