Highlights of the Super League Grand Final between Warrington Wolves and Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield Trinity were crowned Super League champions for the first time in the club’s history with a 23-10 victory over Warrington Wolves in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.

It is the first time Wakefield have made the Grand Final and they achieved their greatest glory on their first attempt.

They also become the sixth winner of Super League, joining Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls and Hull KR.

It rounds out a fairy-tale story for Wakefield who were relegated in 2023, returned to Super League in the 2025 season, and have now written themselves into the history books as champions.

Wakefield held a dominant 19-0 half-time lead thanks to converted tries from Cameron Scott, Isaiah Vagana and Jazz Tevaga, Max Jowitt staying calm under pressure with the boot.

The extra point was then added by Jack Sinfield with just minutes left in the first half.

Early in the second half there was drama as Corey Hall was sent to the sin bin for a high shot on Arron Lindop. Lindop scored with Wakefield a player down, and added a second later on, Ewan Irwin converting the first.

However, a try from Trinity winger Tom Johnstone was enough for them to stay far enough ahead and seal immortality.

Johnstone picked up the Rob Burrow Award for his phenomenal display in both attack and defence.

Wakefield complete the fairy tale with stunning Grand Final win

In front of an electric and sold-out Old Trafford, it was a flawless first 40 from Wakefield Trinity.

They thought they had opened the scoring on the sixth minute when Johnstone went over in the corner. However, on review, it was clear he had been held up then forced into touch.

It took only six minutes longer though for the Yorkshire side to get on the board thanks to a sublime no-look, one-handed flick pass from Lachlan Walmsley which sent Scott walking in and with the Jowitt conversion, they had a 6-0 lead.

While it was end-to-end stuff, metres were coming much more easily to Wakefield with their pack proving too strong. That meant every set ended in pressure.

In the 25th minute, a brilliant Jake Trueman pressure kick saw Johnstone jump highest and find Vagana on his shoulder to walk in. Jowitt added the extras once again.

Just over 10 minutes later, Tyson Smoothy went close and then was followed by Tevaga who threw a dummy and then used his power to barrel over. Jowitt stayed perfect with the boot to extend Wakefield’s lead further.

With less than two minutes remaining of the opening half, Jack Sinfield used some big-game nous to send over a drop goal to give Wakefield a more than three-score lead, and left Warrington with a mountain to climb at 19-0 down.

There was drama immediately in the second half when Wakefield’s Corey Hall was sent to the sin bin for a high shot on Arron Lindop to give Warrington their opportunity to hit back, and they did.

Irwin threw a lovely dummy and then passed to open up the space and with a player advantage, Lindop had all the room to walk over in front of the Warrington faithful. Irwin converted to bring the scoreline to 19-6.

Warrington thought they had gone in again through Matty Ashton just minutes later, but a forward pass ruled out what would have been a score that brought the game right back in the balance

However, with numerical parity restored, it did not take long for Wakefield to get back on top once again and off the back of huge metres from Caleb Hamlin-Uele, they sent it out to Johnstone who used his step to pull off a sensational finish and with a 23-6 lead and 20 minutes to play, the Wakefield end was bouncing.

Warrington would not give up and with eight minutes left on the clock they kept the last tackle alive; Irwin sent over a looping pass and Lindop was in for his second. However, this time Irwin could not convert and the score was 23-10.

However the clock quickly ran away, Wakefield stayed strong, and immortality was theirs as the full-time hooter went and their name was etched onto the Super League trophy.

Jowitt: A rollercoaster of a year for me – highs are worth the lows

Wakefield’s Max Jowitt to Sky Sports:

“A million per cent the highs are worth the lows.

“It didn’t feel real that we were playing a Grand Final until we got here today.

“A rollercoaster of a year for me personally after dropping down to the reserves, not finding form, but I got my opportunity at the back end of the year.

“For this to be my last game for Wakefield, I will never forget it.”

‘Emotional’ Johnstone: I can’t believe it – my dream for the last decade!

Rob Burrow Award winner Tom Johnstone to Sky Sports:

“I can’t quite believe it. I keep crying, I can’t help myself! Such a special club, it’s been the longest week of my life.

“To get out there and get it done, I don’t know what to say.

“This club means eveyrthing to me. I’ve been saying it for a long time. My dream the last 10 years was to win a Grand Final with Wakefield.

“Daryl Powell sold me the dream that we were a club that had aspirations and wanted to win things.

“I believed every word they said and this is where we are now.

“We don’t do this without that belief we have. We built our foundation on that.”

Powell: We have produced flawless rugby league and will get better

Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell to Sky Sports:

“It’s unbelievable really, the story. Where we’ve come from and our ability to go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the comp.

“We had a bit of a rocky period with the 10-minute sin-binning, but we were superb today.

“That’s a big performance from an unbelievable group of blokes.

“We just kept talking about it, and the players have gradually developed and got better. Then it becomes a reality when they see what they are capable of.

“Last week and the start today, almost three flawless halves of rugby league.

“We went to Wigan last week, and that was a hell of a job to go there and win, and it showed us what we could do.

“We kept that belief coming into this game. We are a proper team and we’re going to get better.”

Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess to Sky Sports:

“We physically lost the first half.

“The stats were relatively similar in terms of possession and completion, but they beat us physically.

“They’ve [Wakefield] had a red-hot finish to the season.

“I’m very proud of my group, as it quite easily could have got messy today. We stuck together. But it hurts.

“I don’t think I’ll have any regrets. We showed a lot of spirit in the second half. We are disappointed no doubt. But regrets? No.

“It was Wakefield’s day today .The challenge is to now take that next step. It will be a long few weeks away.”

ParisLongchamp: Caballo De Mar upsets Scandinavia in Prix du Cadran | Racing News

Published

on

Caballo De Mar brought an end to Scandinavia’s eight-race winning run when repeating his win in the Qatar Prix du Cadran from 12 months ago in a thrilling finish at ParisLongchamp.

George Scott’s stayer was delivered by Oisin Murphy at the furlong marker to grab the lead from Scandinavia and the fading pacesetter Queenstown.

As the pair locked horns through the final furlong, Scandinavia regained the lead only for Caballo De Mar to fight back in the shadow of the post to get up by a neck.

Connections had to sweat through a stewards’ inquiry after an objection by Ryan Moore, whose mount Scandinavia, the 1-6 favourite, appeared to receive a bump from the 9-2 winner close to the finish.

Scandinavia’s sequence had included five Group Ones, but Scott’s charge is a formidable opponent at his best, particularly in Paris where he is now three from three in Group Ones.

Scott said: “What an amazing performance from the horse and the team at home.

“I was very emotional afterwards – he’s just such a special horse to us and to come and win the Cadran again is great.

“He’s an amazing horse and just a real character. He takes a lot of managing at home, he’s very lazy and it’s hard to get a grip on him.”

The Newmarket handler felt beforehand he had a chance of beating the red-hot favourite, adding: “We wanted to track Scandinavia and it all went to plan. We managed to get well up on him and then he fought back.

“I thought if there was an opportunity to beat him it was today because my horse loves it here, he was showing all the right signs and Scandinavia had a very hard race in Ireland last time. We felt we could beat him today, but you’re not going to say something like that.

“We’ll see how he comes out of it, but he could go to Ascot on Champions Day.”

Aidan O’Brien said of Scandinavia: “He ran a great race and it’s been a long season for him.

“The ground was a little bit on the slower side for him. Ryan said he was coming back at him.

“That will be him finished for the season. I was never going to go to Ascot as the ground would definitely be gone for him by then.”

Fury vs Joshua: Tyson Fury to invite Donald Trump to accompany him on Anthony Joshua fight ringwalk in December | Boxing News

Published

on

Tyson Fury plans to invite Donald Trump to accompany him on his ringwalk to his long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua.

Fury and Joshua, both former heavyweight world champions, have been rivals for years and will finally box on December 11 in Cardiff.

Lengthy and at times fraught negotiations to make the all-British clash have concluded with the two facing off for the first time at a press conference this week.

Now Fury wants US president Trump to join his procession to the ring at the 80,000 capacity Principality Stadium.

Fury, who met Trump at the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House in June, said: “I’ll definitely make that offer to my old buddy, old pal, and we’ll see if he’s available.

“Probably unlikely because of the situation he’s in at the moment, being the President of the United States.”

‘Warm-up for Usyk’

Fury insists his clash with Joshua is merely preparation for his true priority – a trilogy fight against Oleksandr Usyk, to whom he has lost twice already.

Sky Sports’ Johnny Nelson takes a look back at the Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua press conference and expects things to heat up as the fight gets nearer

He said: “I don’t have any intention of retiring after Joshua. I’m using this bum as a warm-up for Usyk.

“This is a bum to me and I can guarantee that on the night when I knock him spark out he won’t know what time it is. And then I want the rabbit [Usyk] in New York City.

“This year will be the most active year for me since 2018. This’ll be my third fight, I’m literally match fit.

“I’ve done 12 rounds with a 6ft 8in Arslanbek Makhmudov and I’ve done seven rounds with another 6ft 7in behemoth in Mariusz Wach. And then I’m going to do whatever rounds with AJ, who’s another 6ft 6in guy.

“Let’s not pull any punches here. I’m firing on all cylinders at the moment. I feel fantastic. I’m 38 years young.”
