Jeffrey Archer Dead: ‘Kane & Abel’ Author & Politician Was 86
Jeffrey Archer, the prolific British author and former politician, has died at the age of 86.
Archer’s publisher HarperCollins confirmed his death in a statement, revealing that the Kane & Abel writer died “suddenly and peacefully at home” on Monday. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Archer, a former Conservative member of parliament, sold more than 300 million books during a writing career that spanned five decades.
HarperCollins claims that Lord Archer is the only author ever to have been a #1 bestseller in fiction, short stories, and non-fiction
Archer’s work was adapted for the screen on many occasions, including the 1985 CBS miniseries based on Kane & Abel, which starred Peter Strauss as Abel Rosnovski and Sam Neill as William Lowell Kane.
ITV adapted First Among Equals in 1986, starring Jeremy Child, James Faulkner, David Robb, Tom Wilkinson, while Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was adapted by the BBC in 1990.
His political career, which included a spell as the Conservative Party’s deputy chairman, was interrupted by a four-year spell in prison in 2001 after he was found guilty of lying and cheating in a 1987 libel case against The Daily Star newspaper.

Plaintiffs Make Last Ditch Effort To Halt Paramount-WBD Merger
A group of Paramount subscribers and viewers have petitioned the Supreme Court to put at least a temporary halt to the merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction that is scheduled to close on Tuesday.
In a filing on Monday, the petitioners — Pamela Faust, Len Marazzo, Lisa McCarthy, Deborah Rubinsohn and Gary Talewsky — argue that the merger is still anticompetitive, even with the conditions put in place by the settlement of the state attorneys general lawsuit last month.
“The States’ settlement itself requires that the combined company not sell or close the Paramount or Warner Bros. lots during the commitment period, provides reapplication rights to employees displaced by the transaction, and creates an editorial-independence board. Those safeguards show the magnitude of the integration that closing will unleash, but they do not preserve competition between Paramount and Warner Bros.”
The petition is a longshot, given that the plaintiffs’ efforts to stop the merger has been rejected by the district court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The plaintiffs, represented by Joseph M. Alioto, sought a temporary restraining order to block the merger. But U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin, in a ruling last week, cited the plaintiffs’ “repeated failures to advance any evidence in support of their motions for preliminary relief in this case to date.” She also cited an earlier decision in which she granted Paramount’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit, in which she wrote that she had “serious concerns” over the plaintiffs’ standing.
A federal appellate court denied their petition on Friday.
In their petition to the Supreme Court, the plaintiffs pointed to the record of transaction materials, CEO statements and consumer verifications.
Their brief states, “The requested order is narrow: preserve separate ownership and prohibit integration pending disposition of the petition or further order. It does not decide final antitrust liability. It preserves the Court’s ability to decide the legal questions before the October 6 closing changes the competitive structure the Clayton Act is designed to protect.”
The plaintiffs describe themselves as Paramount subscribers, viewers and cable customers. Their lawsuit was originally filed last spring, before the group of state attorneys general sued to block the deal. The settlement includes a consent decree that spells out a 30+ theatrical releases per year schedule, as well as separate negotiations for the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery cable channels.

Matt Vioral Joins Brillstein Entertainment Partners As Manager
Matt Vioral, a 20-year veteran of The Gersh Agency talent department, has joined Brillstein Entertainment Partners in a transition to management, Deadline has learned.
Vioral has been with Gersh since the beginning of his career, having elevated there from executive assistant to agent in 2010. Most recently, he served as Senior Partner. Clients he’ll continue to represent alongside Gersh, as of now, include Jacob Elordi, Drew Starkey (who had already been repped by Brillstein for more than two years), and Ryan Eggold. Expect more names to come.
In a statement on Vioral’s transition, Brillstein’s Jon Liebman said, “We’re excited with Matt’s decision to join Brillstein. His incredibly sharp eye for talent coupled with strong instincts and deep relationships are a dynamic combination for artist management. We look forward to supporting him as he continues to help develop clients and their creative vision.”
Gersh President Leslie Siebert added, “We’re proud of the career he has built here and the contributions he has made to our clients and agency. He leaves with our friendship and support. We look forward to working with Matt in his new role at Brillstein, and continuing to work together with Gersh clients.”
Vioral joined Gersh’s mailroom after graduating from UCLA. During his tenure, he helped guide the careers of a range of established and emerging actors while contributing to the agency’s broader growth.
A Los Angeles native and member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Vioral said: “Gersh has been my professional home for 20 years, and I’m grateful to Leslie, Bob, David and everyone at the agency for their support, collaboration and friendship. I’m excited to begin this next chapter at Brillstein, while continuing to work closely with the colleagues at Gersh who have been such an important part of my career.”
