Declan Rice: Arsenal and England midfielder close to agreeing new deal

Published

on

Declan Rice is close to agreeing a new long-term Arsenal contract, sources have told BBC Sport.

The England midfielder has become a crucial player for the Gunners since his arrival from West Ham for £105m in July 2023.

His current deal expires at the end of next season but BBC Sport revealed in March that talks over a new contract were underway with the process now at an advanced stage.

The 27-year-old has made more than 150 starts for Arsenal, and is also a key player for England, with manager Thomas Tuchel saying this week he is one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Rice would receive a significant pay increase to his reported £240,000-per-week salary, putting him on a par with the club’s best earner Bukayo Saka, who is believed to earn about £350,000 a week.

The news comes after Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s new four-year deal with the Premier League champions was announced on Tuesday.

Premier League predictions & Jones Knows’ best bets: Liverpool vs Manchester City, Manchester United vs Tottenham and more | Football News

Published

on

Our top tipster Lewis Jones, aka Jones Knows, provides his analysis and betting insight across the Premier League weekend.

Arsenal vs Leeds United, Saturday 12.30pm

Three weeks. That’s a long time in football.

This international break with nations playing up to four matches rather than the usual two has the potential to have a huge effect on this Premier League return. Fatigue, injuries, travel and late returns mixed in with teams still developing tactical identity so early in the season is going to influence matters more than the betting markets portray.

The key is that the first half is the period most vulnerable to disruption after this break which I’m betting will be even more of a factor with the added time away on international duty in this unique break.

When looking across the last five seasons in the Championship and Premier League in the matchday after the first international break, the numbers show that first-half goals per game go down by 0.3 of a goal. First-half goal averages have come in at 1.22 across that period in the Championship and Premier League but fall to 0.92 in the first matchday after the first international break.

The numbers become even more interesting when just assessing the Premier League during that period where the average is just 0.82 goals per first half. During that period the chances of a half-time 0-0 have increased too, with 50 per cent of the matches in that five-year sample size seeing no goals scored before the break. That is a huge spike on the long-term numbers across five years of Premier League games which tell us that the normal average strike-rate for a 0-0 at half-time is just 27 per cent.

Remarkably, Leeds have only conceded two first-half goals in their last 20 matches across all competitions with 11 of those games seeing a 0-0 come in at the break. It’s a big runner here at 9/4 with Sky Bet.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-0 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: 0-0 at half-time (9/4 with Sky Bet)

Aston Villa vs Brentford, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6!

The Premier League has become such a congested – and at times bonkers – league that we’ve reached the stage where Brentford are almost being priced as favourites to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park. I get the love for Brentford – but ranking them above an Unai Emery side on home soil feels like a dangerous game to play.

The market still looks cold on Villa, but I think their rebuild is quietly coming together. Johan Manzambi, Zion Suzuki and Nicolas Jackson all shone in the win at Tottenham and, despite so many new faces, there was an encouraging cohesion to Villa’s performance.

That shouldn’t necessarily come as a surprise.

These players are working under a manager who knows exactly what he is doing, especially after an international break where Emery is unbeaten across his last 10 matches with Villa, winning six of them.

With home advantage, a manager I trust implicitly and a price of 13/8 with Sky Bet, I’m happy to take on the market forces when it comes to Brentford. Home win.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1

Chelsea vs Bournemouth, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6!

The loss of Alex Scott will make Bournemouth a less effective team – our job is to work out whether the market has reacted sufficiently enough to the news of his unavailability for six weeks with a tendon issue.

The Cherries have played four times without Scott in the Premier League since the start of last season and failed to win all four, including a disappointing 1-1 draw with Burnley at home – a small sample size of course but certainly relevant.

Chelsea are 7/10 with Sky Bet for victory which is bordering on tempting but the best way in is to add goals to the mix. All five of Chelsea’s games have gone over 2.5 goals with the average coming in at 4.4 per game whilst both teams to score has landed in 13 of Bournemouth’s last 17 away games.

Goals look guaranteed, so combining Chelsea to win, both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 6/4 with Sky Bet rates as a savvy way to attack this game.

SCORE PREDICTION: 3-1

Play Super 6 to win £1m!

Play Super 6 to win £1m!

Ipswich Town vs Fulham, Saturday 3pm

Time to roll the Leif Davis dice again whilst the prices remain inflated.

Davis is playing as an aggressive left-back in Gary O’Neil’s 4-2-3-1 and has become one of Ipswich’s principal attacking outlets. His attacking position means he’s effectively functioning as another winger when Ipswich have sustained possession. This role is bringing the best out of Davis, who in his last four starts has had six shots, three of those hitting the target and scoring twice. Ipswich should find space to work with in this winnable fixture so the 11/4 on Davis to score or assist makes significant appeal.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1 | JONES KNOWS BEST BET: Leif Davis to score or assist (11/4 with Sky Bet)

Sunderland vs Brighton, Saturday 3pm – PLAY SUPER 6!

The betting markets love Brighton, perhaps too much at times.

That could be the case here where the injury news surrounding Sunderland does have a hint of overreaction to it when assessing the price on a home win at 2/1 with Sky Bet.

Yes, Brian Brobbey and Dan Ballard are big players for the Black Cats but this team is built more on the system and functionality rather than any one individual. Sunderland aren’t some hopelessly open newly-promoted side waiting to be demolished. Their underlying profile is very strong at the Stadium of Light. Since promotion, they have lost just five times in 24 home matches and have conceded less than a goal per game in that sample size.

To get them on the draw no bet line at 11/10 with Sky Bet makes lots of sense to back.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-1

Manchester United vs Tottenham, Saturday 5.30pm, live on Sky Sports – PLAY SUPER 6!

In a league where winning duels, playing with intensity and where physicality provides the bedrock for winning games, Manchester United’s running stats this season are becoming an issue for them and their prospects of winning games. In their last game at Fulham, United were outrun by a total of 6.5km – this is the second most a team has been outrun by an opponent in a Premier League match this season.

This season United currently rank in the bottom five for distance covered, in the bottom four for sprints and rank bottom for high-speed runs. They look a team devoid of legs.

Should United fail to win here it would be their worst start to a league season for 40 years – yet the market is expecting a home success with 4/6 on offer with Sky Bet.

As is always the case with Manchester United in the betting markets, the badge is completely skewing what their true price is. They are woefully short here. That makes Spurs a play on the double chance at 6/5 with Sky Bet.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-2

Crystal Palace vs Nottingham Forest, Sunday 2pm, live on Sky Sports – PLAY SUPER 6!

Oliver Glasner faces Crystal Palace for the first time since leaving at the end of last season and this fixture is becoming a little bit more Vindaloo than Korma on the spice chart based on recent meetings.

Not only have Forest pinched Palace’s greatest ever manager, this is a growing rivalry following Forest replacing Palace in the Europa League due to multi-club ownership rules.

Although goals have been in short supply in recent meetings – all four have gone under 2.5 goals – the cards have been flowing with an average of seven cards shown per game and all five going over the 4.5 cards line. The market is sleeping on this added edge between the clubs and are offering Evens for the over 3.5 cards line to be hit – a fantastic bet to attack.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-1 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Over 3.5 cards (Evens with Sky Bet)

Hull City vs Everton, Sunday 2pm, live on Sky Sports

Centre-backs are averaging being fouled once a game against Hull due to Oli McBurnie’s all-action style and the direct play being implemented. Hull’s 21 per cent long-pass rate is the highest in the league and they rank lowest for possession and build-up attacks. Also, McBurnie has competed in the most aerial duels of any Premier League player this season (57). So, this trend of the opposition centre-back being fouled should continue to track at the current averages.

That makes the Evens on offer for Jarrad Branthwaite to be fouled once very juicy. The Everton centre-back has been fouled three times in his last two games and will be engaging in battle with McBurnie on regular occasions.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-1 | JONES KNOWS’ BEST BET: Jarrad Branthwaite to be fouled (Evens with Sky Bet)

Liverpool vs Manchester City, Sunday 4.30pm, live on Sky Sports – PLAY SUPER 6!

Anfield is going to be exceptionally hostile following the news of Man City being found guilty of serious financial-rule breaches across nine seasons by an independent Premier League Commission – a sanction City have appealed against, so the sporting consequences are not yet settled.

The important point to make from a betting perspective when analysing this game is that there is little evidence so far that the verdict has destabilised the playing group. It’s too early to make that assumption.

Pep Guardiola has publicly backed the club and told supporters that they would get through it together. And, significantly, Erling Haaland has now spoken about the situation, calling for positivity.

This Liverpool team are far from the finished article and have been hit hard by injury issues over the international break.

There is a big possibility of siege mentality winning out when it comes to City and that makes them – a team who are top of the Premier League remember – a tantalising prospect at 7/5 with Sky Bet for the away win.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-2

Coventry City vs Newcastle United, Monday 8pm, live on Sky Sports

Fixture difficulty and toughness of the schedule is always a key angle to consider when assessing teams at this time of the season. Coventry are the only team to have played the top three in the Premier League, losing 8-0 on aggregate in those matches. There could be mitigating circumstances to their poor start. We’ll know more after this fixture.

One area Frank Lampard’s team will look to exploit is from set pieces, where Bobby Thomas brings a massive threat to the table. The centre-back has had 10 shots in five games whilst Newcastle have shipped 31 shots conceded from set pieces already this season – the most of any team.

Thomas popped up with three goals for Coventry in their promotion season and will land for anytime goalscorer backers at some point soon. This might be the time to catch him at 8/1 with Sky Bet.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-1

Jones Knows’ best bets…

  • 0-0 half-time correct score in Arsenal vs Leeds (9/4 with Sky Bet)
  • Leif Davis to score or assist (11/4 with Sky Bet)
  • Over 3.5 cards in Crystal Palace vs Nottingham Forest (Evens with Sky Bet)
  • Jarrad Branthwaite to be fouled (Evens with Sky Bet)

Greece vs England: How Ella Toone’s Lionesses snub could boost her World Cup chances | Football News

Published

on

Ella Toone may have started this international break on the outside looking in, but she looks set to emerge from it with her chances of making it to Brazil next summer strengthened.

Toone was dropped for the World Cup play-off games against Greece after struggling for form at the start of the season with Manchester United.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman admitted Toone’s performances had not been up to the expected standard and laid down a challenge for the two-time Euros winner.

England Lionesses manager Sarina Weigman speaks on calling up Ella Toone after Lucy Bronze left the squad injured and speaks on the attacking strategy they plan to use in their World Cup qualifier against Greece.

The experienced head coach wanted to see how Toone would respond, both on and off the field. The results have impressed the usually stoic Wiegman.

A disappointed Toone accepted she would be watching the Greece games on TV and admitted to reporters after her last WSL game that she would use being dropped as “fuel to come back even better”.

She then went to Spain to reset mentally and physically.

Instead of chilling out by the pool in Marbella, Toone put in the work to make sure she returned to her club in peak condition.

Then came the call from Wiegman – one gratefully received by the midfielder, even if she is likely to sit on the bench for the next two matches.

Toone does not care. She just wants to be part of things again, even if that means a last-minute scramble across Europe.

Image:

All of this has made Wiegman smile. She wanted a professional and motivated reaction from one of her go-to players, and she has got it.

Wiegman wants to take all her trusted lieutenants to Brazil, giving them the chance to go into battle together one last time before she calls time on her England tenure.

Toone is in that select group. It appears overcoming this setback has made her even more respected by her coach.

England have lacked depth in midfield in recent years. Since Fran Kirby’s retirement, Toone, Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway have largely been the first-choice trio.

That may no longer be the case.

Wiegman has been impressed by Toone’s response
Image:

Twenty-year-old Lexi Potter’s form at Chelsea cannot be ignored, while Erica Meg Parkinson, who is just 18, is a regular starter in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Then there is Lucia Kendall, who is well-liked by Wiegman, while Laura Blinkilde Brown and Grace Clinton have just won the Women’s Super League (WSL) with Manchester City.

Despite the increased competition, Wiegman admits big games “aren’t the time for rotation”.

That is another positive Toone can take from this situation.

If she can rediscover her best form for Manchester United, Toone can once again become the player Wiegman turns to when the stakes are highest.

England are planning for plenty of those occasions this season, and Toone appears determined to make sure she is there for as many of them as possible.

Manchester United vs Tottenham: Different summer transfer strategies collide on Saturday at Old Trafford | Football News

Published

on

Tottenham went big in the summer transfer window while Manchester United held back, but both are struggling.

Two clubs with very different strategies in the summer now find themselves facing a remarkably similar problem after underwhelming starts to the season, as the pair meet at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

Spurs spent £334m, including £100m on Sandro Tonali, as Roberto De Zerbi was handed significant backing to reshape his squad.

United, by contrast, were more frugal with their spending, with £163m committed to their rebuild.

Yet ahead of this weekend’s crunch game, Spurs sit bottom of the Premier League and are still waiting for their first win, while Michael Carrick is already feeling the pressure at Old Trafford.

The scrutiny, then, cannot simply be confined to the two managers. At both clubs, the contrasting decisions made above them this summer are beginning to demand examination.

Saturday 10th October 5:00pm

Kick off 5:30pm

Man Utd yet to break £100m mark on a single player

Manchester United have refused to follow the modern Premier League trend of putting £100m-plus into one statement signing, but that is not understood to reflect a reluctance to spend. Instead, it reflects the club’s approach to rebuilding the squad.

As Sky Sports News’ Dan Khan explains, the £100m figure itself can be misleading.

“I actually think it’s redundant to use that figure of £100m. If you look at appreciation, Paul Pogba, if you were to sign him now from Juventus, like United did, that would probably be well over £100m.

“The question is, can Man Utd spend money on Elliot Anderson? Not necessarily to do with the figure but more whether they are in the market for these top midfielders.

United’s priority this summer was midfield, with three additions needed rather than one marquee arrival. Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba have therefore accounted for much of the spending.

A left-back was also considered, with United monitoring Myles Lewis-Skelly and Lewis Hall, but neither was realistically available. Instead, the club doubled down on midfield, with the expectation that left-back will be addressed next summer.

Sky Sports News’ Manchester United correspondent Danyal Khan is joined by Stretford Paddock’s Adam McKola to discuss whether the club are still a force in the transfer market

There is also a need for United to improve their ability to sell. “Their most senior sales were Toby Collyer and Radek Vitek, who hadn’t played a senior game,” Khan says.

“I don’t think there is a reluctance to spend big, having spoken to people in and around the club. But it was quite clear that this summer they needed to increase the squad size to compete in different competitions.”

The result is a deliberate preference for squad depth over one blockbuster signing. Whether that proves to be strategic patience or an incomplete rebuild will depend heavily on the results.

Why the pressure should not solely be on Carrick

Carrick is the man on the touchline, but the scrutiny at United will begin to climb up the chain.

Sky Sports’ William Bitibiri and Callum Bishop discuss whether Michael Carrick’s job will be under pressure if Man Utd lose to Spurs

For Khan, the focus will move onto director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, who have been entrusted with leading the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era.

“There will be a big microscope on Wilcox and Berrada, especially because they have been trusted in leading this Ratcliffe era forward. They went out on a limb to appoint Ruben Amorim. It must be said, they gave him a lot of time.”

That managerial history is significant. Under the current regime, United have gone from Erik ten Hag to Amorim to Carrick, yet Khan does not expect another sudden change.

“When we are talking about Carrick, I wouldn’t imagine any sudden decisions will be made on his future. First of all, they all decided to give Ten Hag a new contract. Then they pivoted to Amorim and then they went out for Carrick.”

But that does not mean the hierarchy escapes scrutiny.

“I’m not saying that’s a bad decision. However, when the slogan is that we are ‘going for the best in class and we’re doing everything data driven,’ I can’t imagine Ratcliffe is very happy at the moment in terms of the results and the performances.”

Sherwood unimpressed by Spurs’ new signings

On a special Spurs Sky Sports podcast, former manager Tim Sherwood questions the club’s latest signings

Despite spending more than double on signings than Man Utd, Spurs have made their worst start to a Premier League season after five games.

They head to Old Trafford still searching for their first league win of the season, and their dismal start has already raised questions over their lavish summer spending.

Asked on a special Sky Sports Spurs podcast whether any of the 10 new recruits have impressed, ex-Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood replied: “No, no one,” he insisted. “I can’t say anyone’s really impressed me, and anyone would have done a better job than anyone who was there last season.

“They’ve underachieved, they really have. We always judge on results, so I don’t look at any individual player and think, ‘well, you’re coming out of some credit here’, because the team’s losing, and I’m not sure there’s been any outstanding performers.”

The lack of success from Spurs’ signings before this summer worries Sherwood about the latest recruits.

“Probably the last four or five years, the track record of Tottenham signings has not been fantastic,” he said.

“It’s been a very long time since they’ve made a decent signing. Now, I’m not saying they’re poor signings; I’m saying that they haven’t done it yet, and there’s still a lot of time to be able to get some confidence and show what they can really do.

“We’ve seen them in fits and starts and little cameos for other teams, but it’s a different kettle of fish playing for Tottenham.”

‘De Zerbi doesn’t know his best team’

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Tim Sherwood and Michael Bridge believe Roberto De Zerbi is not under pressure despite their poor start to the season

Following the summer arrivals, De Zerbi has more options at his disposal, but that appears to have led to indecision around his best starting XI.

The Italian has made the most changes to starting XIs in the Premier League this season (13).

Sherwood said: “If you were a Man Utd fan and Bruno Fernandes was missing, you’d be devastated.

“But I’m not sure any Tottenham fans would be devastated if any of their players are missing, because I’m not sure the manager knows their best team at the moment.

“The fans certainly don’t, and you’re asking me, and I don’t!”

On a special Sky Sports podcast, Tim Sherwood and Michael Bridge believe Spurs have a lack of leaders in the side

Sky Sports News’ Tottenham reporter Michael Bridge believes the squad is still short in two areas, despite their huge summer spending.

He told a special Sky Sports Spurs podcast: “I think they need a striker – an actual No 9 – but how many are there out there?

“It doesn’t help that Will Lankshear is scoring every week for Middlesbrough because he looks like a proper old-fashioned centre-forward and he’s young and English. That’s my worry.

“I’m also not 100 per cent sure if Antonin Kinsky is a Tottenham No 1 for years to come.

“He did an incredible job keeping the club in the Premier League with his saves. However, I’m still not sure if he’s still a No 1.

“If you’ve spent that amount of money and you still need, for me, a goalkeeper and a No 9, then there’s still a way to go.”

Watch Man Utd vs Tottenham on Saturday from 5pm, live on Sky Sports; kick-off 5.30pm.
