Greece vs England: How Ella Toone’s Lionesses snub could boost her World Cup chances | Football News

Published

on

Ella Toone may have started this international break on the outside looking in, but she looks set to emerge from it with her chances of making it to Brazil next summer strengthened.

Toone was dropped for the World Cup play-off games against Greece after struggling for form at the start of the season with Manchester United.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman admitted Toone’s performances had not been up to the expected standard and laid down a challenge for the two-time Euros winner.

England Lionesses manager Sarina Weigman speaks on calling up Ella Toone after Lucy Bronze left the squad injured and speaks on the attacking strategy they plan to use in their World Cup qualifier against Greece.

The experienced head coach wanted to see how Toone would respond, both on and off the field. The results have impressed the usually stoic Wiegman.

A disappointed Toone accepted she would be watching the Greece games on TV and admitted to reporters after her last WSL game that she would use being dropped as “fuel to come back even better”.

She then went to Spain to reset mentally and physically.

Instead of chilling out by the pool in Marbella, Toone put in the work to make sure she returned to her club in peak condition.

Then came the call from Wiegman – one gratefully received by the midfielder, even if she is likely to sit on the bench for the next two matches.

Toone does not care. She just wants to be part of things again, even if that means a last-minute scramble across Europe.

All of this has made Wiegman smile. She wanted a professional and motivated reaction from one of her go-to players, and she has got it.

Wiegman wants to take all her trusted lieutenants to Brazil, giving them the chance to go into battle together one last time before she calls time on her England tenure.

Toone is in that select group. It appears overcoming this setback has made her even more respected by her coach.

England have lacked depth in midfield in recent years. Since Fran Kirby’s retirement, Toone, Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway have largely been the first-choice trio.

That may no longer be the case.

Twenty-year-old Lexi Potter’s form at Chelsea cannot be ignored, while Erica Meg Parkinson, who is just 18, is a regular starter in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Then there is Lucia Kendall, who is well-liked by Wiegman, while Laura Blinkilde Brown and Grace Clinton have just won the Women’s Super League (WSL) with Manchester City.

Despite the increased competition, Wiegman admits big games “aren’t the time for rotation”.

That is another positive Toone can take from this situation.

If she can rediscover her best form for Manchester United, Toone can once again become the player Wiegman turns to when the stakes are highest.

England are planning for plenty of those occasions this season, and Toone appears determined to make sure she is there for as many of them as possible.

Manchester United vs Tottenham: Different summer transfer strategies collide on Saturday at Old Trafford | Football News

Published

on

Tottenham went big in the summer transfer window while Manchester United held back, but both are struggling.

Two clubs with very different strategies in the summer now find themselves facing a remarkably similar problem after underwhelming starts to the season, as the pair meet at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.

Spurs spent £334m, including £100m on Sandro Tonali, as Roberto De Zerbi was handed significant backing to reshape his squad.

United, by contrast, were more frugal with their spending, with £163m committed to their rebuild.

Yet ahead of this weekend’s crunch game, Spurs sit bottom of the Premier League and are still waiting for their first win, while Michael Carrick is already feeling the pressure at Old Trafford.

The scrutiny, then, cannot simply be confined to the two managers. At both clubs, the contrasting decisions made above them this summer are beginning to demand examination.

Man Utd yet to break £100m mark on a single player

Manchester United have refused to follow the modern Premier League trend of putting £100m-plus into one statement signing, but that is not understood to reflect a reluctance to spend. Instead, it reflects the club’s approach to rebuilding the squad.

As Sky Sports News’ Dan Khan explains, the £100m figure itself can be misleading.

“I actually think it’s redundant to use that figure of £100m. If you look at appreciation, Paul Pogba, if you were to sign him now from Juventus, like United did, that would probably be well over £100m.

“The question is, can Man Utd spend money on Elliot Anderson? Not necessarily to do with the figure but more whether they are in the market for these top midfielders.

United’s priority this summer was midfield, with three additions needed rather than one marquee arrival. Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba have therefore accounted for much of the spending.

A left-back was also considered, with United monitoring Myles Lewis-Skelly and Lewis Hall, but neither was realistically available. Instead, the club doubled down on midfield, with the expectation that left-back will be addressed next summer.

Sky Sports News’ Manchester United correspondent Danyal Khan is joined by Stretford Paddock’s Adam McKola to discuss whether the club are still a force in the transfer market

There is also a need for United to improve their ability to sell. “Their most senior sales were Toby Collyer and Radek Vitek, who hadn’t played a senior game,” Khan says.

“I don’t think there is a reluctance to spend big, having spoken to people in and around the club. But it was quite clear that this summer they needed to increase the squad size to compete in different competitions.”

The result is a deliberate preference for squad depth over one blockbuster signing. Whether that proves to be strategic patience or an incomplete rebuild will depend heavily on the results.

Why the pressure should not solely be on Carrick

Carrick is the man on the touchline, but the scrutiny at United will begin to climb up the chain.

Sky Sports’ William Bitibiri and Callum Bishop discuss whether Michael Carrick’s job will be under pressure if Man Utd lose to Spurs

For Khan, the focus will move onto director of football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, who have been entrusted with leading the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era.

“There will be a big microscope on Wilcox and Berrada, especially because they have been trusted in leading this Ratcliffe era forward. They went out on a limb to appoint Ruben Amorim. It must be said, they gave him a lot of time.”

That managerial history is significant. Under the current regime, United have gone from Erik ten Hag to Amorim to Carrick, yet Khan does not expect another sudden change.

“When we are talking about Carrick, I wouldn’t imagine any sudden decisions will be made on his future. First of all, they all decided to give Ten Hag a new contract. Then they pivoted to Amorim and then they went out for Carrick.”

But that does not mean the hierarchy escapes scrutiny.

“I’m not saying that’s a bad decision. However, when the slogan is that we are ‘going for the best in class and we’re doing everything data driven,’ I can’t imagine Ratcliffe is very happy at the moment in terms of the results and the performances.”

Sherwood unimpressed by Spurs’ new signings

On a special Spurs Sky Sports podcast, former manager Tim Sherwood questions the club’s latest signings

Despite spending more than double on signings than Man Utd, Spurs have made their worst start to a Premier League season after five games.

They head to Old Trafford still searching for their first league win of the season, and their dismal start has already raised questions over their lavish summer spending.

Asked on a special Sky Sports Spurs podcast whether any of the 10 new recruits have impressed, ex-Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood replied: “No, no one,” he insisted. “I can’t say anyone’s really impressed me, and anyone would have done a better job than anyone who was there last season.

“They’ve underachieved, they really have. We always judge on results, so I don’t look at any individual player and think, ‘well, you’re coming out of some credit here’, because the team’s losing, and I’m not sure there’s been any outstanding performers.”

The lack of success from Spurs’ signings before this summer worries Sherwood about the latest recruits.

“Probably the last four or five years, the track record of Tottenham signings has not been fantastic,” he said.

“It’s been a very long time since they’ve made a decent signing. Now, I’m not saying they’re poor signings; I’m saying that they haven’t done it yet, and there’s still a lot of time to be able to get some confidence and show what they can really do.

“We’ve seen them in fits and starts and little cameos for other teams, but it’s a different kettle of fish playing for Tottenham.”

‘De Zerbi doesn’t know his best team’

Tim Sherwood and Michael Bridge believe Roberto De Zerbi is not under pressure despite their poor start to the season

Following the summer arrivals, De Zerbi has more options at his disposal, but that appears to have led to indecision around his best starting XI.

The Italian has made the most changes to starting XIs in the Premier League this season (13).

Sherwood said: “If you were a Man Utd fan and Bruno Fernandes was missing, you’d be devastated.

“But I’m not sure any Tottenham fans would be devastated if any of their players are missing, because I’m not sure the manager knows their best team at the moment.

“The fans certainly don’t, and you’re asking me, and I don’t!”

On a special Sky Sports podcast, Tim Sherwood and Michael Bridge believe Spurs have a lack of leaders in the side

Sky Sports News’ Tottenham reporter Michael Bridge believes the squad is still short in two areas, despite their huge summer spending.

He told a special Sky Sports Spurs podcast: “I think they need a striker – an actual No 9 – but how many are there out there?

“It doesn’t help that Will Lankshear is scoring every week for Middlesbrough because he looks like a proper old-fashioned centre-forward and he’s young and English. That’s my worry.

“I’m also not 100 per cent sure if Antonin Kinsky is a Tottenham No 1 for years to come.

“He did an incredible job keeping the club in the Premier League with his saves. However, I’m still not sure if he’s still a No 1.

“If you’ve spent that amount of money and you still need, for me, a goalkeeper and a No 9, then there’s still a way to go.”
