Greece Women 1 – 3 England Women
England are in control of their World Cup play-off with Greece after winning the first leg 3-1 in Crete.
Goals from Georgia Stanway, Maya Le Tissier and Alessia Russo moved the Lionesses into a strong position for Tuesday’s second leg in Leicester – although Calliste Brookshire, who plays for Rangers in Scotland, pulled one back late on for a Greece side ranked 58th in the world. The winner will play Slovakia or Ukraine in round two on the road to Brazil 2027.
Lauren James saw a stunning chip from long range ruled out for offside in the first half but the Lionesses – forced into the play-offs after finishing behind Spain in qualifying – were not at their sharpest in that period and they were almost shocked when Ioanna Papatheodorou cracked a shot against the crossbar from 35 yards.
But England grabbed the advantage when Stanway finished a slick move that saw her combine with Laura Blindkilde Brown and Russo.
Le Tissier then thumped in from an angle after the break before Russo found the bottom corner from Beth Mead’s square pass just four minutes later as England swiftly took the game away from Greece.
Brookshire got on the scoresheet with some neat footwork in the box to give the underdogs some hope, but Jess Park blasted a shot against the underside of the crossbar in stoppage time, perhaps signalling that Sarina Wiegman’s side have more firepower in their arsenal for the return leg.
Key moments in Crete
12: ROOF OF THE NET! Keira Walsh’s attempted lob from 18 yards has too much on it and the ball lands on the roof of the net.
20: GOAL RULED OUT! James finds the net with an exquisite chip from 30 yards out… but an offside check rules out the goal.
34: GREECE HIT THE BAR! Papatheodorou twists and turns as she runs past Esme Morgan and then pings a shot against Hannah Hampton’s bar from 35 yards!
39: GOAL! Blindkilde Brown pops the ball into Russo, who lays it square for Stanway to give England the breakthrough.
63: GOAL! Le Tissier thumps in England’s second on the angle after earlier seeing two shots parried away.
67: GOAL! Russo fires a third into the bottom corner from Mead’s square pass in the box.
78: GOAL! Greece pull one back with Brookshire showing some neat footwork in the box before firing into the far bottom corner.
Wiegman: We still have things to work on
England boss Sarina Wiegman speaking to ITV:
“At moments we played really well. We started well; they started very aggressively too, but we stayed calm. That’s what I’m most pleased with. We have a couple of things to work on too.
“At moments in the game, we weren’t tight enough. The ball wasn’t moving quickly enough, especially when we got the ball a lot in the pockets and higher up the pitch. We need to be tighter and more aligned because, with the opportunities we created, we could have scored so many more goals.
“Sometimes we were offside, so I think those are things we have to work on. And, of course, I’m not happy with the goal we conceded.
“There were more positives, Maya’s goal was one of them. She’s really improving her game at club level and, with us, she’s more comfortable.”
Analysis: A win – but a frustrating night for England and Wiegman
Sky Sports News’ Anton Toloui in Crete:
“A win for England but a frustrating night for Wiegman and the England squad. They expected to win by more than two goals. Wiegman was even more frustrated by the fact they conceded here.
“They had 74 per cent possession, 26 shots, but England looked slow, predictable, like they played into the Greeks’ hands.
“The Greeks are delighted to walk away with this result, knowing the game is still up for grabs in Leicester.
“Wiegman will have some tough words for her team privately. Publicly she’s backing them on a professional job well done.”

Open de Espana: Grant Forrest continues good record to take one-stroke lead into the weekend in Madrid | Golf News
Scotland’s Grant Forrest continued his good record at the Open de Espana to take a one-stroke lead into the weekend.
Forrest, who was at five-under-par alongside fellow Scotsman Conner Syme and Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra at the end of Thursday’s play, carded a four-under second-round 67 to move to nine under and open a one-stroke lead at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.
Syme shot a second-round 68 and sits in joint-second place with Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach, who rolled in five consecutive birdies from the fourth hole on the way to his 66.
“It was a really good score in the end,” said Forrest, who has twice finished tied third in Spain’s national open, in 2021 and 2024, and has never missed the cut across his six previous appearances.
“I didn’t have my best stuff on our first five or six holes, but made a couple of really nice par saves to keep the momentum going, and then I just managed to make quite a few birdies.
“Started driving it well the last 12 holes and delighted with four under. I probably didn’t play quite as well as yesterday.
“Obviously, I had a couple of good scores there [over past two days].
“It’s hard to know when a day like Thursday will come when you shoot five under for nine holes and you fly up the board, or today was a bit more plodding along and then a couple came towards the end. I’m just going to keep the foot down.”
Eugenio Chacarra, who is playing on home soil with a fractured toe, and England’s Joe Dean are both at eight under, with Danish duo Jacob Skov Olesen and Jeff Winther a shot further back, alongside French pair Martin Couvra and Victor Perez and New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier.
Patrick Reed, who has led the Race to Dubai Rankings since February, missed the cut and Chacarra would leapfrog both Rory McIlroy and the American with a victory on Sunday.

Fury vs Joshua will draw the most lucrative gate in British boxing history says Dana White | Boxing News
Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua will generate the most lucrative gate in British boxing history, Dana White tells Sky Sports.
Tickets for Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua’s December 11 showdown at the Principality stadium in Cardiff went on sale on Friday, with the most expensive regular seats going for £13,128.
The Principality Stadium can hold more than 70,000 spectators and White revealed on Friday evening: “I think there’s less than 700 tickets left. You can consider this thing a sellout already.”
More than half a million people joined the Ticketmaster queue to snap up tickets for the long-awaited heavyweight bout on December 11, with thousands being sold within an hour of the launch.
“There were over 500,000 people in the queue. Incredible. But for our generation, two of the biggest, most famous heavyweights in boxing. And not even arguable it’s the biggest UK fight ever between two British heavyweights,” White told Sky Sports.
Before the sale commenced, Ticketmaster confirmed regular seats would cost between £88.50 and £13,128.
Those figures did not include VIP packages, hotel and travel packages, group or concession prices.
White anticipates the fight will draw the most lucrative gate in the history of British boxing. “Definitely. It will. I don’t want to mis-speak here but we have this thing scaled for around $34 million,” he said.
“The UK is the right place for this fight to happen but it will have done well anywhere.”
The most expensive tickets exceed face-value figures for some of the world’s biggest sporting events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where some seats were listed for £8,333.
In 2015 Floyd Mayweather’s bout against Manny Pacquiao sold out within a minute, with top-priced face-value seats costing fans £4,982.
Fury last fought in London in April against Arslanbek Makhmudov, where ringside seats at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were priced at £3,000.
Comparatively, ringside tickets for his bout against Dillian Whyte at Wembley in 2022, were priced at £2,250.
The cheapest seats on the pitch for Fury vs Joshua were listed at £345, while others ranged from £700 to £900.
Some of the lowest-priced tickets in the stadium’s upper terrace were on sale for £205.20. Ringside seats were also being sold on StubHub for more than £8,000.
Ringwalks are expected to commence at around 1am local time to cater for an international audience.
No rematch clause has been included in the contract for the fight, but that does not mean a second bout cannot be negotiated.
When the December 11 fight was made it was announced that Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring and American combat sports promoter Dana White were staging the contest. However Eddie Hearn, who promotes Joshua, has publicly claimed the American cannot be involved.
White, renowned for creating the UFC, said of his role in this event: “Helped them with the gate, putting everything together. We’re going to do all the production, produce the show and do what I do every Saturday.”
