Grant Forrest earns major invites with Spanish Open win
Spanish Open

Scotland’s Grant Forrest held off a charge from home favourite Eugenio Chacarra to win the Spanish Open and book a spot at The Open and the Masters next year.
With Chacarra in the clubhouse at 13 under, Forrest and playing partner Victor Perez needed to make birdies at the 18th to go above the Spaniard.
Both players’ drives nestled down in the greenside rough on the 322-yard par four, and after Perez’s birdie putt drifted past the hole, Forrest sunk his to seal his third DP World Tour title and a first professional win outside Scotland.
“I’m in pure shock just now,” Forrest said. “It’s been such a tough year. I’ve got good memories of this course and this tournament. To do it is unbelievable.
“It was tough. I wasn’t too sure what other groups were doing. It was a matter of staying in it. I dug in so well.
“That’s fairytale stuff, I’ve played two Opens and to be going to Augusta, I just can’t get my head round it. You can have a great career in this game and never get to go to Augusta, so I cannot believe it.”
Going into the final round in a share of the lead with England’s Joe Dean on 13 under, Forrest birdied the fourth, but made bogeys at three, six and eight as he dropped two shots off the top.
However, Forrest showed excellent resilience and moved back into a share of the lead as he started his back nine with three birdies and a bogey in five holes.
And he got the job done with a tidy up-and-down at the last to card a closing one-under 70 and take home the £480,000 first prize.

Cherki sparkles but who must do more? – player ratings for Liverpool v Man City
Alisson: Could do nothing to keep out Erling Haaland’s strike then beaten by a beauty from Jeremy Doku and some solid footwork from Rayan Cherki. 5
Ronald Araujo: Got a cheap yellow card early on and will be annoyed that the first two Man City goals came from his side. 5
Virgil van Dijk: Often pushed out of position to help Liverpool deal with getting outnumbered in midfield. Perhaps could have closed Haaland down quicker. 6
Jeremy Jacquet: Wasn’t a bad display from a young talent who is very impressive but this must have been a real eye-opener against a quality City attack. 6
Milos Kerkez: Battled well with Iliman Ndiaye and pushed up regularly but lacked quality in the final third. 5
Alexis Mac Allister: Grew into the game and put in a good shift but struggled once Liverpool went down to 10 men. 5
Ryan Gravenberch: Came in for the injured Dominik Szoboszlai and was Liverpool‘s best player until he got sent off for a second yellow card. Naive on his part. 6
Victor Munoz: Played with such a fearlessness and was an absolute nuisance for Man City, causing Nico O’Reilly all sorts of problems. 7
Florian Wirtz: Simply has got to do better, particularly in games of this magnitude. Was largely ineffective and made some poor decisions. 4
Bradley Barcola: Sharp on the ball and did his defensive duties but, like Wirtz, must to do more in the final third. 5
Lewis Koumas: Making his first Premier League start and the 21-year-old got stuck in from the outset in an energetic display that was loved by the Anfield crowd. 7
Subs:
Nyoni (on 66, Wirtz): 6
Frimpong (on 75, Araujo): 5
Ngumoha (on 75, Koumas): 5
Gomez (on 88, Jacquet)
Chiesa (on 88, Barcola)
Subs not used: Mamardashvili, Endo, Tsimikas, McConnell,

Singapore Grand Prix: Harry Benjamin’s driver ratings as Max Verstappen wins again
Max Verstappen took his second win in a row with victory from pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Dutchman also won the final sprint event of the campaign at Marina Bay and has moved up two places in the drivers’ standings from sixth to fourth.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished third and has extended his title advantage over Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who was ninth, to 102 points.
Here are my ratings for how the drivers performed across the whole weekend in Singapore.
Max Verstappen – 10/10
Pretty much the definition of a perfect weekend. Pole and victory in both the sprint race and grand prix, and once George Russell crashed out of the sprint on Saturday there was barely a moment where Red Bull’s Verstappen looked like losing control of either race.
Charles Leclerc- 9/10
Consistently Verstappen’s closest challenger and took two podiums from the weekend. Third in the sprint followed by second in the grand prix was about as much as Ferrari could realistically have asked for.
Kimi Antonelli – 8.5/10
Another hugely mature weekend from Mercedes’ championship leader. Fourth in the sprint and fourth in qualifying before fighting his way on to the grand prix podium late on, despite dealing with brake concerns and flirting a little too often with track limits.
Lando Norris – 6.5/10
Sunday was solid enough, with fourth probably the maximum McLaren had on outright pace. But his collision with team-mate Oscar Piastri in the sprint cost both drivers heavily, and prevents this from being rated as a particularly strong weekend.
Oscar Piastri – 7/10
The victim rather than the instigator of McLaren’s sprint collision and recovered with a decent Sunday performance. A slow puncture forced an extra stop but he still chased down and passed Lewis Hamilton for fifth, although seventh in qualifying left him with plenty of work to do.
Lewis Hamilton – 7.5/10
His Saturday was excellent – a brilliant start helped turn sixth into second in the sprint before he qualified third for the main race. Ran in the podium places for much of Sunday too, but his decision to stay out on worn tyres backfired badly and eventually dropped him to sixth.
Liam Lawson – 8.5/10
A really impressive weekend for Racing Bulls’ Lawson. Fifth in the sprint, ninth on the grand prix grid and seventh on Sunday meant points in both races and another reminder of just how strong his recent form has become.
Nico Hulkenberg – 8/10
Another very useful weekend for Audi. Took points with seventh in the sprint, narrowly missed Q3 and then finished eighth in the grand prix, holding Russell behind late on in the process.
George Russell – 7/10
The pace deserved a much higher score. Fastest in practice, second in sprint qualifying and sensational off the line to take the sprint lead. However, throwing it into the wall at the end of lap one was a major mistake. Recovering from 19th on the grand prix grid to ninth was an excellent response from the Mercedes driver.
Isack Hadjar – 8/10
Almost everything that went wrong before Sunday was outside of his control. Mechanical trouble on his Red Bull ended his sprint and reliability problems meant he couldn’t set a qualifying time, so recovering from the pit lane to score a point was an excellent drive.

Kimi Antonelli relieved Max Verstappen is not in 2026 F1 title fight after Red Bull driver dominates Singapore GP | F1 News
Kimi Antonelli says it would be “very scary” if Max Verstappen was a championship rival after the Red Bull driver won the last two Formula 1 races.
Verstappen scored maximum points across the Sprint weekend in Singapore to add to his victory earlier this month in Malaysia but, unlike last year, is too far back to make a championship charge.
In fact, Antonelli could wrap up the title at the next race in Austin on October 23-25, live on Sky Sports F1, if he outscores Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 23 points and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton by 14 points.
Antonelli had another damage limitation weekend in Singapore but still finished on the podium in third after a good strategy call by Mercedes to give him fresh soft tyres to overtake McLaren’s Lando Norris and Hamilton late on in Sunday’s race.
It was an unexpected result given the new upgrades, which Mercedes introduced in Malaysia, were not giving the major performance gain the team expected.
“It would be very scary!” Antonelli told Sky Sports F1 when asked if he is glad Verstappen is not in this year’s championship battle.
“All in all I feel like we are doing a great job. At the end, you look at the season, and we have always been there.
“Obviously we have had a great car and now we are trying to understand this new package. I’m very proud of the team this weekend because we pushed through the difficulties and started to see life at the end of the tunnel. It’s just a matter of time.
“Now we go to Austin, a normal weekend, where we can hopefully do a lot of changes and understand the package more.”
Antonelli, 20, is set to break Sebastian Vettel’s record of being the youngest F1 world champion and has six races to get over the line.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is usually cautious with his expectations but even he admits Antonelli is almost certainly going to win the title.
“You look at the numbers and ask the probability of him winning, and it’s probably almost 100 per cent. But it’s motor racing, you can break down, you can have accidents, and then things could start to stress,” he told Sky Sports F1.
“So, I think we need to look at it race by race, make sure that we are continuing to score the points, and eventually hopefully it’s going to come towards him.”
Verstappen: Maybe Lambiase was happy radio was not working!
Red Bull’s recent resurgence appears to have ended Mercedes’ large dominance over the season, although Verstappen’s win in Singapore was not straightforward as he was unable to talk to the team for the whole race.
Verstappen, who has won at every track on the calendar apart from Madrid, could hear his engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, but not the other way around.
“Maybe he was happy that it was not working! I couldn’t really say anything. He did try at one point to ask me a few things in code, and I think he understood well what I meant or did not do,” said Verstappen.
“But it’s never nice. I’ve been having difficulty with my radio already the whole season, and this weekend has been particularly bad.”
The biggest threat to Verstappen’s win came at the start from Charles Leclerc as Red Bull have been poor off the line throughout 2026.
However, Verstappen got a good enough launch to move to the inside and pinch Leclerc, forcing the Ferrari driver to brake early and back out of the move.
“The start was critical, so that was just good enough. Something was not particularly right at the start, so I need to understand what went wrong there,” he said.
“Before releasing the clutch, it didn’t feel good. But it was just good enough. Then we had a few laps with some deployment issues, so that’s where Charles almost got me actually into Turn 7.
“Once we had cleared the deployment problems, it was fine. The car was really good on the tyres. I could really manage them well.
“But to be honest, I think it was one of the first times that I’ve driven in clean air here in Singapore in the race, so I guess that’s also nice.
“It’s been just a fantastic weekend for us. I mean, we were flying on the soft, we were okay on the medium, and then of course with the VSC, I think it was right what Charles did with pitting and going back on a soft tyre. But, we just had it under control and of course, really happy to win here.”
