BBC Studios Launches Scripted Fund & Hires Ben Donald

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: BBC Studios has tasked Mallorca Files EP Ben Donald with helping discover the next generation of European hits based on IP, as the producer-distributor launches a central fund for these projects.

Donald is taking on a support role with BBC Studios alongside his day-to-day duties running his Cosmopolitan Pictures indie. He will help identify scripted IP from across Europe and seek co-pro opportunities, as he looks to build relationships with writers, authors and other creative talent.

Donald is effectively taking on the gig first mentioned to Deadline earlier this year by global productions chief Matt Forde, although at that point the role was more solely focused on scouting IP. This has been expanded out somewhat.

Forde’s team oversees labels in the likes of the UK, Spain and the Nordics, where the new centralized fund has already started paying out. The fund will back the development of local projects. Forde’s team manages hit scripted formats like Ghosts in multiple territories and Forde has always been clear that he wants to unearth more shows like the hit BBC sitcom, which sold to CBS in the U.S. and is about to release a movie.

Donald will continue running Cosmopolitan Pictures alongside his BBC Studios role and we are told he has several projects in development.

A former BBC Studios exec who has also had distribution deals with BBC Studios, Donald’s credits include The Mallorca Files, Death in Paradise and Parade’s End, all of which travelled far and wide. Cosmopolitan has minority investment from Fifth Season-backed The Story Collective, which is run by some of Donald’s former colleagues at BBC Studios.

BBC Studios Productions boss Zai Bennett is speaking at MIPCOM this afternoon.

Korean premium content platform Tving is getting a dedicated space on Middle East and North Africa streamer MBC Shahid.

The new space was announced by MBC Shahid’s Riyadh-based parent MBC Group and Korean premium content leader CJ ENM, which is a partner on Tving, in an expansion of their long-term strategic partnership.

Under the agreement, the branded Tving space will provide audiences across MENA with premium K-content from CJ ENM, Tving and other leading South Korean production studios.

More than 13 new titles are scheduled for release during 2026, alongside more than 20 titles from CJ ENM’s existing content library, with the volume of available titles set to increase over the course of the partnership.

The lineup will include the recently premiered romantic comedy My Bias, My Boss, as well as titles including The Legend of Kitchen Soldier, Filing for Love, The Judge Returns and Our Universe.

Arabic dubbing and subtitles will be available for selected content, while all new titles will be available for simulcast on the MBC Shahid app, allowing audiences across MENA to watch the latest Korean series alongside their release in Korea.

The agreement also extends the reach of K-content across MBC’s linear television channels. As part of the partnership, CJ ENM titles will also be introduced on MBC4 exclusively, for a specific period, with schedule to be announced in due course.

Tareq Alibrahim, Director of MBC1, MBC DRAMA, and MBC SHAHID Content, and Sebastian Kim, Vice President and Head of Content Distribution Business Unit of CJ ENM, officially sealed the deal during MIPCOM in Cannes.

BBC’s Kate Phillips On AI, YouTube & ‘Blue Planet III’

Published

on

The BBC will never lie to its audience about its use of artificial intelligence, content boss Kate Phillips said today.

Phillips noted that “AI is part of TV production now” as a “research and edit tool” but said the corporation will never use AI on huge shows like Blue Planet III in terms of what you see on screen. She was speaking as the MIPCOM audience was shown a trailer of Blue Planet III.

“We would never use AI on something that because you are lying to the audience and we can never do that,” Phillips said at MIPCOM.

Her comments came a fortnight after her boss, DG Matt Brittin, said he had been sent an AI-generated episode of Doctor Who, which he called “pretty good.” This has got some people’s backs up at the BBC, who fear for AI’s impact on jobs and creativity.

Phillips delivered an emotional statement today about how the BBC will continue commissioning shows the way it always has, rather than relying on algorithms. Her comments came as the BBC works more closely with YouTube and a day after YouTube Europe boss Pedro Pina said the platform is “not invested in producing content.”

“Someone asked me recently about algorithms and whether I’d commission based on algorithms and I’d like to say very clearly, ‘Absolutely not’,” said Phillips. “Just because the distribution mechanism is changing it doesn’t mean that our creative goals have changed. People want great content. YouTube is not a commissioner, it’s a platform. If you commission based on algorithms you are literally a creative carcass.”

Published

on

The BBC is planning to examine the life and career of J.K. Rowling in a two-part documentary that is likely to spark significant scrutiny.

The UK broadcaster has commissioned Rogan Productions (Grenfell: Uncovered) to produce J.K. Rowling (working title), exploring the author’s dramatic rise, cultural influence, and contested legacy.

The first episode will spotlight the creation of Harry Potter and the stratospheric success of the wizarding universe created by Rowling.

The second episode will examine her interventions on Scottish independence, feminism, free speech and gender identity, which place her at the heart of increasingly bitter online exchanges.
