Deonna Purrazzo Says Match Against Athena Is a Battle for ROH’s Kingdom

Deonna Purrazzo has made it clear: a singles match against Athena isn’t just another dream match — it’s a battle for the soul of Ring of Honor. Speaking with The Ledgera magazine, the ROH Women’s Pure Champion opened up about what a one-on-one showdown with the ROH Women’s World Champion would mean to her.

Two Keepers of the Guard

“I’ve said it before, a match between Deonna Purrazzo & Athena would be like the two keepers of the guard fighting for rights to the Kingdom,” Purrazzo said. “We’ve both carried Ring of Honor in very different ways. Athena’s legacy here speaks for itself, and I think what I’ve been able to build over the last 11 years here in ROH does the same.”

Both women have been vocal about wanting to face each other, and the matchup has all the makings of a generational collision. As Purrazzo sees it, the stakes go far beyond wins and losses: “We both believe that ROH belongs to us & that we’re part of its foundation. So, to me, that match isn’t just about who wins. It’s about who gets to say, ‘This is my Kingdom.'”

The Pure Rules Question

What makes the potential matchup even more intriguing is the rules question. Purrazzo has wrestled under Pure rules for the majority of her career — the technical, rope-break-limited style that defines her ROH Women’s Pure Championship reign. Athena, on the other hand, has never competed under Pure rules.

“Athena has never challenged under Pure rules before … can she change her style & strategy enough to win?” Purrazzo asked, laying down a gauntlet that turns the fantasy matchup into a genuine chess game. The stylistic clash between Athena’s aggressive dominance and Purrazzo’s technical precision would make for must-see wrestling.

Purrazzo also touched on the most difficult part of her recent injury elsewhere in the interview, reminding fans of the physical toll behind the dream matches. For now, the Purrazzo vs. Athena showdown remains a “when” rather than an “if” — and Ring of Honor’s kingdom will be watching when it happens.
