Will Ospreay: I’d Be the Criminal Mastermind of an Underground Wrestling Promotion If It Became Illegal

Will Ospreay loves professional wrestling more than almost anyone on the planet — and he has the outlaw hypothetical to prove it. Speaking to WKMG News 6 ahead of AEW WrestleDream, the AEW World Champion said that if wrestling were made illegal tomorrow, he would happily become the “criminal mastermind” of an underground mafia wrestling promotion. For Ospreay, there is no version of life without this business in it.

From Backyard Trampoline to World Champion

Ospreay has never hidden where it all started. His earliest wrestling memories are of grappling in his own back garden on a trampoline, before graduating to backyard promotions and, eventually, formal training. That kid-in-the-garden spirit still defines him — the man widely regarded as the best in-ring performer alive got here because he simply never stopped wrestling.

He told WKMG he feels blessed to do what he loves for a living, and made it clear the passion runs deeper than any contract or championship. If the industry vanished overnight, he would just go back to where he began: wrestling in the garden, no permission needed.

A Champion’s Mindset

The timing of the comments is fitting. At WrestleDream, Ospreay survived an eight-man Clockwork Carnage match to retain the AEW World Championship, cementing his place at the very top of the company. He has become the standard-bearer of AEW’s in-ring product — a “cardio machine,” as he jokingly called himself in the same interview, who treats every big match like a personal mission.

It is that all-consuming devotion that makes the underground-promotion joke land. This is not a wrestler counting down to retirement. This is a lifer — and if history ever outlawed his art form, Will Ospreay would be running it out of a basement somewhere, with a smile on his face.
