Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, now streaming on Netflix, has confirmed a theory that Cyberpunk 2077 fans have argued about for years — and it involves one of the game’s darkest technologies, Soulkiller.

The Soulkiller Theory
Soulkiller is a program introduced in Cyberpunk 2077 that can digitize a person’s mind and store it on a chip. When inserted into another person, the digital entity from the chip slowly takes over its host, eventually killing the body’s original mind. It is very much a death sentence — but fans of the game have long theorized there might be an unintentional side benefit to Soulkiller: a cure for cyberpsychosis.
And Edgerunners 2, designed as a standalone sequel series, makes that theory part of its plot — folding Soulkiller and elements from the game directly into its story in a way the first season never did.
Cyberpsychosis, Finally Treatable?
In the world of the show and the game, cyberpsychosis is a dissociative disorder that affects humans who have replaced much of their organic bodies with cybernetics. As the body rejects the chrome parts, sufferers stop seeing themselves as people and begin to see themselves as machines with replaceable parts — eventually disassociating completely and turning violently aggressive.
Edgerunners 2 still delivers the franchise’s signature levels of gore, incredible animation, and its condemnation of corporations that destroy everything they touch — but by making the Soulkiller-cyberpsychosis connection real, it also ties the new season far more tightly to the lore of Cyberpunk 2077 than the original ever attempted.
